I bred mealworms for a little while before, and at first their poop/ shells didn't bother me but once I got 60k+ whenever I opened their drawer my eyes and nose turned to soup. Mealworm allergies suck! Especially the after effect of burning lungs.

Took me less than six months to wind up with major respiratory issues--apparently they are a common trigger to more severe issues. You're going to need a better fitting mask. :( And for god's sake don't take it off until you wash--shower and change clothes. IT IS NOT THE BEDDING. If you look at the scientific literature on Tenebrio molitor allergies/sensitivities, it is actually the critters themselves.

I know this is a late reply but they weigh how much a 100 mealworms are and then multiply by 50 is what small breeders do but I think big businesses just estimate

+Bearded Addiction the companies that sell them in these quantities are all trustworthy otherwise they wouldn't be in business, and they usually give you a minimum of a 10% over count so the only people who count them is the seller and they do it by weighing them.

Hey man. i had the same problem i came to find out it was what ever the breeders where using as substrate! I started breeding them myself in great value oat meal and suddenly no more allergic reaction and it was cheaper hope this helps. Sorry if it doesn't

This is why a lot of people breed mealworms, I see. Though, if you're allergic like he is, dealing with them in your home would suck.

Is it the mealworms that cause the allergies? Have you tried changing the bedding from wheat to say millet or corn? Maybe it is the bedding?

What? I thought I was the only one who got sick around mealworms! Well, more, I think it's the frass. Whenever I dig through my colony, it stirs up all this frass. I breath it in, and it gives me this awful wet cough.I was so sick once, I was up all night and had to be out from school. I'm starting a roach colony soon, so I hope I don't have such a hard time with them.

Also as a side note, you should talk to your doctor about this allergy. I ate cashews for the first 15 years of my life and suddenly became allergic to them similarly to you and the worms. The doctor warned me that for some allergies, prolonged exposure to the same thing, and having frequent allergic reactions can actually increase the allergic response. My response started out as rashes/raw skin on face and throat, I now can't breathe/need an epi pen if I eat them. Just be careful

Sucks that you're allergic, I think people should wear masks like this when handling any animals waste with any consistency whether it's mealworms/crickets/roaches, I worked at an animal rescue league and they required us to wear masks when cleaning litter boxes/dog pens. That stuff cant be healthy to breath in, especially the insects, such small pieces of waste that it gets airborne and into your lungs :(

You can develop allergies to new things. I know a guy who became allergic to antivenin. Considering he works with venomous snakes, it sucks. lol

I am also EXTREMELY allergic to mealworms. Started about 6 months after I started dealing with them. I live on Zyrtec, Ive delt with sinus infections and asmatic attacks, but my life is breeding leos so Im stuck; ironic as their food will probably kill me x.x Im going to start feeding more crickets so I only deal with mealworms once or twice a week.

Alergy is probably due to the dust, fras, etc. Hepa filters help a lot.

crickets are a lot healthier but you can use meal worms sometimes as something different and if you want wax worms once a month or longer as a TREAT.

I have raised mealworms before for a while. I used oatmeal as bedding, which while readily accessible it is difficult to separate the mealworms from the oatmeal. Any suggestions for a better bedding that is easier to sift through. To make this work on a larger scale, separating the mealworms has to be easier than it is using oatmeal.

it's pretty easy to suddenly be allergic to something. I was a cook in a seafood place for a few years. then awhile later I was suddenly allergic to shellfish.
