Great video again Funke! There is one thing I admire about your channel (by extention, your character) which is the fact that you don't throw the country under the bus to drive traffic to your channel. The focus is always to make issues clearer. I applaud you. Now, if I have dual citizenship, say Nigerian and British citizenship but I choose to travel to Nigeria using my British passport. I am of the opinion that it makes sense for the Immigration to ask or make me get visa on arrival. To the rule, I am a foreigner.

Absolutely! Why will you apply for visa on arrival when you have Nigerian passport, valid or expired? It doesn't make sense. I watched Miss Trudy's videowhen she recently traveled to Naija with her editor, they applied for visa on arrival and they were given. She did a video of when she arrived at the airport and went to the Immigrationoffice for her visa. So visa on arrival is not a sham, but some thugs in uniforms are taking advantage of travellers.

If you go on the embassy website (UK) they indicate that 'all immigration and consular services have been suspended' since December 2020. The phone numbers provided for people who need emergency travel documents are all switched off. This is quite disturbing as a lot of people who have purchased tickets in advance and presumably given themselves adequate time to sort out any passport issues are now clueless on what to do. Should someone with a valid British passport and an expired Nigerian passport just make their way to Heathrow and hope BA are in a good enough mood to let them on the plane? If so, how much should one be ready to legitimately pay for this visa on arrival?

The issue affects Nigerians with dual citizens. You can arrive with an expired Nigerian passport while you can board the plane with the other foreign passport.

I traveled to Abuja from Heathrow at the end of March. I had two potential issues 1) my Nigerian passport has expired since May 2020 2) My daughter only had a British passport at the time of travel. I was able to board the flight with no issues or questions even asked. Additionally I didn’t pay anything at the airport in Abuja. It was actually really smooth. I hope this helps people

What is the purpose of a traveling paassport? The passport is an indication that you're a citizen of the country whose passport you bear or carry. When leaving Nigeria to any country, you need a visa to enter that country but you don't need and shouldn't need a visa to go back to your country. I strongly believe the visa on arrival is meant for foreign nationals visiting Nigeria. If our passport expires while we are overseas and our embassy is not able to renew our passports for any reason, we as Nigerias coming home should be allowed to come back home without any issue provided the passport we carry hass our photo and name reflecting on our other travel documents. All the immigration officers needs to do is to verify the outward journey and if the visa on the passport is still valid. Regardless of if the visa has expired or not, Nigerians returning home should be allowed in with their expired passport. I applied to renew and paid the passport renewal fees more than 4months ago but have not heard back from the Embassy. Why take or allow people to make payments for the renewals that will never happen.Why make life difficult for us. The issue is the same in or outside of Nigeria.

The VOA criteria does not cover Nigerians with expired passport! Check the online application and you will see It is for business people, diplomats and African Union country members. You won't even be able to get the evidence they want for the application self - if your reason is an expired passport. The guy you are in contact with will obviously not tell you about the dodgy activity going on - he knows it will end up online. Heathrow and BA will let you fly with expired passport it's on their website... You will however not leave the airport in Nigeria without bribe.

I travelled to Nigeria on the 1st of March 2021 via BA. The passenger next to me was a Nigerian holding a British passport. He told me he will get a visa upon his arrival and based on his conversation he didn't mentioned that he has applied online for a visa application letter. When we arrived lagos, the section were divided and he was told to nove to visa on arrival area where he was attended too while I was waiting to clear my bags in the baggage area and I later saw him came out to meet me and said he was given a visa. My thoughts here is that what Abike Dabiri said about visa on arrival is not a misled information, as long as your documents has Nigerian information on it e.g name and place of birth you are good to go. This is my thoughts correct me if am wrong. It's not only for those with expired Nigerian passport. What if someone who decided to change his name from a Nigerian name to another Nigerian name after getting a British passport and decided to ditched the Nigerian passport because has we speak, change of name in Nigeria is not allowed so what happens to those who re Nigerians by birth with a foreign passport how would they enter their country?

Good job Sassy. I just subscribed to your KZbin now. I traveled to Nigeria last year, precisely 12 November 2020. My passport had expired, so I didn’t want to risk it and I applied for Emergency Travel Certificate(ETC). I was to travel with British Airways, so on arrival l decided not to present the ETC, but instead presented my expired Nigerian passport. To my surprise there was no question raised to that effect and I was allowed to travel. So I felt that my ETC was a waste of money because I paid £250 for it. But on arrival in Lagos, as I presented my expired Nigerian passport, it was as if I had committed a great crime and the countenance of the officers attending to me suddenly changed, trying to treat me as a criminal. I waited for them to finish their rants, and they were asking for a bribe as usual. I then opened my bag and brought out my ETC, they said to me ; “why now bros, you for don tell us say you get ETC”. Even after that, they were still asking for bribe to sign my ETC, it was then I started blowing hot for them. As far as I’m concerned, that country is fraud, nothing but fraud.

The officials need to do better. I am saddened by how people are getting pestered for money. With regard to the officials at the embassy not sharing that you can travel without an ETC, I actually don't blame them because the government has ACTUALLY NOT made a formal written statement to that fact and who knows what goes on behind the scenes politically.

Travel documents are essential. The only new aspect here (as far as Nigeria is concerned) is the '*on arrival' part. But on a normal day you always need a valid passport. Usually if you are a dual citizen (with two passports); and need to enter Nigeria; but your Nigerian passport has either expired or gone missing, then you would need to aquire a visa to allow you enter and leave freely with your other passport. I would assume this is the same for other countries.

I don’t know Funke if that’s a good idea for someone a Nigeria who has not had a Nigerian passport or who is using a different passport according to you, this person must apply and get an approval on visa on arrival before he/she could travel to Nigeria, isn’t it better for this person to apply straight ahead for visa? Although never having been to Nigeria I have required a visa for entering Ghana, which Im guessing is a pretty similar process. There is a visa on arrival section available at Kotoka, Accra. Would I use it, no. Would i trust them, no. I have the same issue of living far from London where all the embassies are located. But there are several visa agencies who will do it for you. I have used Scotts Visa (London based visa service) - fill out the form online and post in the form and passport. They do the form filling and the running back and forth to the embassy. They offer different times frames including next day service depending on how desperate or disorganised you are. Yes you pay (approx £65 for the slowest service) but it takes ALL the stress out of the situation. They are excellent

Yes there is limited booklets in the country so if you're looking to pay the standard fee for the passport, you will likely have to wait for a number of months

If you have any family or friends in any northern states... go there once you get home, they have materials for passport production readily available... compared to Lagos, Abuja Oyo etc.....

He has no Nigerian passport and upon arrival he was granted a Nigerian visa upon arrival at MMA but as usual he was asked for money by one.of.the Nigerian immigration officer which he collected the officer's account number so he can do a transfer to his account. On a separate note,I think this information about new visa policy upon arrival should be passed to all airlines and in all Countries to enable Nigerians to travel with ease. Even if you report via email,they won't do nothing.

Hi Funke, I don't know if you have noticed that getting a passport now is hell. It is about 1 year that the Nigeria Immigration Services keep saying no passport booklet to process passport applications.

@@ceyindah if you're in Lagos, then I will suggest you go to Ondo or Ekiti, don't go to Ogun or Oyo, because you will have a spill of applicants from Lagos to those states. If you're in Abuja, then I will suggest you go to Nasarawa, Benue, Niger or Kogi. Because people from these states travel less, compared to people from the Southern part of Nigeria. If you can take the risk and go up north like Kebbi, Sokoto, Jigawa, Adamawa or Taraba. Then you'll get it super easily.

@@done5060 yes, I guessed Kano won't be so much of a bother. I did mine in Lafia, Nasarawa state and it was ready same day, but had to collect it the following day because i couldn't complete the bank transaction same day because the portal was down. The states up middle belt and North are pretty straightforward when it comes to passport applications and collections. But you see Lagos ehn, i don't understand why so much stress. I did my last passport renewal in Festac, Lagos and it took me over two weeks to get it. The stress was unbelievable.

The only challenge you might encounter (which I encountered) is the fact that whenever you get to the state you want to renew... it’s not going to be express service like others, renewing locally. I pray may you find ‘educated people’ to attend to you... the truth is that your application in UK already has an identification attached to it which makes your passport unique anywhere on earth... it CANNOT BE DUPLICATED to maintain its integrity. Hence, they will have a challenge processing your renewal all over again from the NIS office. It’s not impossible to do... that’s why I’m praying you find educated person. It’s just a matter of editing the unique identification attached to your initial application - which those who attend to me in Kano are not used to... eventually they called me in to show me it’s not possible but i showed them the fields they need to click to make necessary edits (I’m an IT professional) it’s my application of cos ... I was privileged to see it.

I’ve posted on other questions on this topic... I lost my dad and all of us (children) had to travel to Nigeria unexpectedly, Lufthansa, BA, KLM, United Airlines, Royal Air Maroc are airlines my family member used and we all shared this story and concern of expired passports... which fortunately - We had no issues flying to Nigeria. - All I can advise anyone before buying ticket is double check with the airline.

Hello, I have a question about visa and travelling to Nigeria. I am a British citizen now, but I was born in Nigeria. I was once a refugee before getting my settlement here. I don't have a Nigeria passport anymore, the last time I saw it was 16years ago, so basically it does not exist. So if I want to come to Nigeria do I need a visa or I just need my British passport? My understanding if you have dual nationality now with an expired Nigerian passport you can go and come without wahala ......we didnt need a visa before so why are they asking us to get a visa for our country on arrival with this new policy we should be able to walk through without explanation. The Nigerian Ports authority and immigration or whatever they call themselves should use the PA to announce rules about being asked for money.....if the PA system is announcing this every five minutes this should deter the corruption. IF THEY REALLY MEAN BUSSINES ......

The best thing to do is to get your foreign born kid an emergency travel certificate. If you present a foreign passport then you will need a visa on arrival. To avoid Visa on arrival, just get an Emergency Travel Document.

Thanks Sassy Funke for the information and clarity. To be honest, when the government makes an attempt to make the visa and travel requirements easily accessible, some bunch of thugs in uniforms at the airport make life miserable for travellers. I think Abike Dabiri's video was quite clear but there was no further information published on a website like the NIDCOM or Nigerian Immigration so that people can verify and if those thugs especially at the Lagos airport want to extort travellers, the travellers can make reference and challenge them. Can you please use your platform and reach out to the Nigerian Immigration or NIDCOM to publish this update on their platforms for us to use as reference all the time?
