I'm a good SAS coder, but I was a bit lost watching this, and not sure why this would be any better than writing SAS code. For instance, if you don't know SAS code, how would you know how to write that complex function using COMPRESS and PUT, or even understand the PUT function parameters (such as when to use $10. versus 10.). I like the visual flow, but somehow parts of it were already there - I'd prefer to see how the flow is done step by step. Finally, I've always found that even non-coders - for maintenance reasons - prefer to see code to be able to search-and-replace code when necessary. When existing code and options are buried within the flow objects - like they are here (and other tools, such as Tableau), it makes maintenance more difficult. As my co-worker - who is not a SAS programmer by trade - told me recently when I mentioned using flows, "but I miss the code".

Bruce, Thanks for your inquiry! This video was specifically targeted to users who want to use SAS Studio in a SAS Viya environment. We have a class that covers SAS Studio flows in more detail: 2.sas.com/6052Kirq2 . That class would do what you want to show step-by-step how the flow is built starting from an empty flow. If you don't need to use SAS Viya or build flows, then this video and our course may not be your cup of tea. Flows are a point-and-click tool in SAS Studio with SAS Viya that allows the use to visualize importing, access and transforming data without knowing much code. If you're at all familiar with how Enterprise Guide Process Flows work, then the ability design a flow in SAS Studio is very analogous to that feature. Do you need to know SAS code to use flows in SAS Studio? No, not if you have clean data, that just needs to be imported and does not need to be manipulated. You make a fair point when you say that some knowledge of code was needed to create the functions that did the transformations from character to numeric and numeric to character. We cover topics like the COMPRESS, PUT and INPUT functions (and why you'd use $10. vs 10.) in our Programming 1 and Programming 2 classes. The more you know at that level of coding, the more you can do in your SAS Studio flow. Thanks for watching the video and providing your feedback.
