Gussow's classic blues harmonica videos

5 жыл бұрын

After 23 years in the making, the documentary "Satan & Adam" has finally been released on Netflix and iTunes. It's the story of an unlikely black-and-white blues duo, Sterling "Mr. Satan" Magee and Adam Gussow, who rose from the streets of Harlem into an international touring career before crashing and breaking apart--and then, miraculously, pulling themselves back together for a late-life renaissance.
In this "up close and personal" video, harmonica player Gussow tells stories about the duo and offers insights into the documentary process.
Here are links for the things Gussow talks about:

Just watched ...WOW!!! ....lots of love and passion ! Love of music and each other . It's infectious and can be spread , and should , if people would just pay attention . The passion certainly pull my attention ! Music has always been part of my life , and carries so much emotion . As I've gotten older I've gone from singing , and playing trombone as a teen , to needing to express myself musically in a way that fits with my life now .So I'm trying to learning harmonica . Which lead me to find your lessons on KZbin , and I have enjoyed your videos very much , maybe not practicing as I should , but I feel your passion come through , and it fills a spot , makes me fell good . As I try to follow the flow that is my life , I am overwhelmed when it leads me these places . Such a great story ! Thank you with love and respect .

"As I try to follow the flow that is my life, I am overwhelmed when it leads me to these places." That's a beautiful evocation of what Joseph Campbell meant by "follow your bliss." Sometimes it gets cliched as "the passion-driven life" or "the purpose-driven life," but both of those phrases, too, get at something important, which is that it's always a good idea to remain attentive to the things that make you fee alive, creative, and joy-filled. Move in that direction. Give new things a chance to manifest--and on their own schedule. Don't stay locked into whatever groove you happen to be in, just because you happen to be locked into it. And yes: when you come alive and start trusting your instincts, you'll sometimes be shocked, in a good way, by what lies just around the corner. I'm a fan of Campbell's "The Hero With a Thousand Faces." The stages of the (hero's) journey are all spelled out there. Take that first step, he says, outward from the comfortable everyday world into the world you've been awakened to by your passion, or by your unhappiness, and you're likely to run into a Helper--sometimes a wise crusty old troll who lurks under the bridge, sometimes a KZbin harmonica guy. :)

I worked at a Golf Course outside Albany NY from 1985 to 1995. Satan and Adam played there in the early 90s. I worked the door for cover charges, then watched the show feet from the area they played between the bar and fireplace. I was blown away by the fullness of sound from you 2. I closed my eyes and it could have easily been 5 musicians playing. Never forget it.

That's so cool. Thanks for the memory! I can't bring that gig to mind. We once played a small restaurant near Columbia, NY--or in Columbia Country. We played a two-hour set. Little restaurant run the the chef. We didn't work Albany area much; we worked Saratoga Springs more often. Do you have any more info? I can remember a lot of gigs, but this one is slipping my mind. I've got a nearly complete gig list from those days, though, and w/a little more help could find it on that.

Adam, I started watching your tutorial videos way back when you first started posting them. I remember way back then you were talking about a forthcoming documentary that seemed like it would never materialize. It's absolutely amazing that it is finally out and that I am hearing about it now. To be honest, I haven't watched your videos in a few years, (busy with college), and apparently you haven't been posting much lately. I came back to your videos just today when I watched your Sugar Blue video and that lead me to this one. I am so happy for your continued success and I hope for more of it in the future. Me? I'm still playing harp like crazy, (and I've got most of my over blows down)!

Thank you so much for sharing your passion and your story... you’re a great inspiration. I’ve just seen the documentary Satan and Adam on Netflix Canada after listening to one of your video mentionning it on this channel and I was wondering about your musical background before you met Sterling McGee. Then I’ve listen to this video and it answered a lot about what I had in mind while watching the documentary so thanks again for sharing!!! I’m a beginner at harmonica and I’m just starting to explore your lessons on youtube, also on your website Modern blues harmonica. I knew almost nothing about blues (I chose harmonica at first to play traditionnal french canadian music) but the more I listen to blues, the more I want to discover and learn... I’ve also listen to the album Harlem Blues on Spotify (and saw they got Mother Mojo and Living on the River available to) and I hope you’re getting royalty from them.

Thank you for filling in the gaps on this wonderful story. I love the details you shared about Nat Riddles and Professor Sixmillion. Mr. Satan's evolving hihats....I've been looking at film closely trying to decipher where his distinct clapping sound comes from. Not sure if he's doing it with his feet or if it's the way his tambourines are slapping. I've never heard anyone else play with that quality and I can't replicate at home with what I've got.
@gussowsclassicbluesharmoni2726
@gussowsclassicbluesharmoni2726 5 жыл бұрын
Arrick, I think what you're talking about is the way that he used his heels to slap the metal "foot" portion of the two hi-hat cymbals against the wooden sounding board. In other words, even as he was using his toes and the main part of his foot on the hi-hat pedals in the standard way, to get the cymbal-crashing sound (with tambourines and maracas on top!), he was using his heels on the back part of the pedals to get a hard, sharp counter-rhythm against the wooden board. It's an incredible feat. (No pun intended).
@gussowsclassicbluesharmoni2726
@gussowsclassicbluesharmoni2726 5 жыл бұрын
You can hear it in this video. Here he's not really doing a counter-rhythm, but that "clack" is the heel of the hi-hat pedals. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6DPeaV7pNh3hqc

Also wondering, How did he get so good at the harp by that point - did that just come from sitting and playing with records??

After seeing it (and meeting you and Scott) and the Bend (OR) Film Festival, I was telling my mom about it. Seeing how much your story...and the film...resonated with me, she asked to borrow my copy of _Mr. Satan's Apprentice,._ which I've had for years and read several times. She said, "The way he writes, I feel like I know him and Mr. Satan." Just as she finished the book, the film hit Netflix, so last time I visited my parents, we queued it up and watched it together. I've now seen it three times, and each time, a different aspect of it grabs my attention. As you mentioned in this video, even already knowing your story, I welled up with tears when watching it the first time...and even the second. Now, I'm looking forward to watching it with my ten-year-old daughter, who has heard your names many times throughout her life. (My fourteen-year-old saw it with me at the Hollywood Theater in Portland.) Based on how timely the story is with regard to current American race relations, I'll be eagerly awaiting the Oscar nomination announcement with fingers crossed. I suppose, for my mom and me, it didn't occur to us to consider the White Adventurism because we both read the book _before_ watching the film. I suppose, also, that Scott didn't mention your important, formative, pre-Satan experiences because that time wasn't _part of_ your time with Mr. Satan. Yes?

Just tried to rewatch on Netflix and they pulled it down. This is an incredibly important documentary that needs to remain on Netflix or put on KZbin somewhere. This story needs to be told.

As a novice harmonica player, I watched a bunch of your harmonica tutorials on KZbin over the past year....then, I watched Satan & Adam on Netflix, and only when it was about half over did I realize the KZbin Adam and the Netflix Adam were one and the same. But I suspected the doco left a lot of the important background out.

I was scared I caught the tail end of your videos. I just started playing about 3 months ago, and I practice and noodle for a few hours every single day thanks to you. Thanks for the update, and here's a bit of advice FOR YOU: use KZbin to make yourself a bunch of moolah! I know you already have so many videos, but many are old, and though the insight and knowledge is timeless, the quality hasn't aged nearly as well as your playing. Put all the old stuff behind a paywall or something, buy a couple hundred bucks worth of lighting, and do it again, knowing how you'd do it differently this time. Optimize your videos for KZbin "instructional videos". They have a kind of preferred template that you can see in how the algorithm up-regulates certain formats. Own that space. You have a thing that most people don't. Nobody can replicate it, and you're the only person that has it. It's not just your website, you could make six figures regularly off of KZbin if you packaged it right. Shoot, hire someone and it will pay for itself!

I was in a room of white people at work. One black man said it's a good thing[That Obama was elected] because we would all be in the streets, having it out. No one in the room said anything. I don't see black or white until you tell me you are black. I once heard a man on a program about being American say that he didn't think he was an African-American, he was an American and proud of that. It's the 3rd generation that you become an American, no Irish this or anything else.
