I inked with a #2 watercolor brush for Marvel years ago. Started with Windsor Newton, but found that their quality degraded, so I switched to Scharff Series 3000 finest sables, which are amazing. I love watching other inkers work, because I understand the decisions being made and always think things like "Huh, I would have done THAT THING, THIS WAY". Great video. Excellent brushwork. Reminds me of some of the greats from the 70's.

I did end up buying a few Scharff 3000s...and I agree, they're pretty nice. I'm probably going to incorporate them as my main brush going forward. Thanks for the kind words, Ted.

Hi Shane! Thank you so much for this video it's inspiring. I'm in the midst of creating my comic, and about to pick up some strathmore. What about pencil lines though? How do we erase these because in my experience the kneaded eraser is the only eraser I use for "erasing" any pencil marks. However, when I use those inky pens they leave a smudge behind if I erase it because it's still wet.. So I imagine the brush would be even wetter right? How do we go about removing the lines? Thanks! Or is it not necessary? Maybe keep the lines... also I noticed you used a greenish turqoise pencil to outline the lines? Is that a colored pencil because someone told me once that scanning the drawing with those lines makes it easier for the computer to pick it up. Thanks Shane, Kendall ~CartoonMyDog
@ShaneWhiteStudios
@ShaneWhiteStudios 9 жыл бұрын
Kendall Falk Hi, Kendall. Thanks for watching. The blue pencil I start with is a COLOR ERASE pencil #20044 BLUE. I'll roll a kneaded eraser to pick up the loosest of pencil material before you using a 2B to tighten it up. Then I roll a kneaded eraser across that so it lightens it up a bit and helps the ink stick better. The lighter you go the better as long as you can still ink. If you skip the 2B stage you don't really have to erase too much. Why? Because when you scan in linework it should be scanned as B/W art at no less than 1200 dpi. It'll only pick up black or white...nothing in between. But you can get different looks and quality to your art if you scan it as color or grayscale. If you do it like that 600 dpi should suffice. White soft erasers are good for addition pencil marks. They come in a variety of sizes and styles. Also Gum erasers while crumbly won't rough up your paper and ink after it dries. Always allow enough time for drying before erasing. Hope that helps. I'll be posting a video about all this after I move to the new studio. =s=
@KendallFalk
@KendallFalk 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Shane, Thank you that helps a lot! The way I do my drawings, I draw it in mechanical pencil first. Then I ink it with a pen, but it's one of those wet fine uni ball pens. It takes some time to dry and I have the lines down it still looks somewhat decent. Never tried the brush yet sort of skiddish to try but I'll do it anyway. Then after the ink dries I erase it and add in the shadows.. Sometimes I scan it into photoshop and color it in. Or, the latest thing I'm doing is using the pen tablet to draw on my intuos on Sketch Book Pro, then I color it all in on there. And then I put it in Photoshop.. Or... lol I'll draw in illustrator, put the line art in photoshop and color it in there. I think for my comic though. I feel that I should hand draw it, ink it, and scan it in... So that it looks more traditional? ~looking foward to seeing the next video. ~Best, ~Kendall F.

It stuns me how well you developed your sensitivity to create all these diverse organic lines. The knowledge of deciding where to place the heavy lines, the pitch-black drop shadows and all the different grades of hatching in-between. Just amazing. I'm green with envy. In terms of ink, have you tried Rotring? I started my career as a draftsman before it all went digital and realised that the Rotring ink is extremely dense while thin and also very durable. I have graphics that are 30 years old and the lines are still pitch black. ;-)
@ShaneWhiteStudios
@ShaneWhiteStudios 6 ай бұрын
I had a friend who used ROTRING for airbrush but I didn't know they made it thinner for inkwork. I'd say Dr. Martin's Blackstar sounds similar in description, but for me it's just cost prohibitive. Thank you for the kind words by the way.

I think one of the things that impressed me the most while watching this, is your control with the brush while doing circles. I seem to need, most of the time, a template to ink mine. This showed up on my feed. I do not normally look over tutorial or process videos but I dig this. Nice to see an old school inking style which involves adaption to fix mistakes instead of ctrl+z. Think any illustrator should learn this brush/tech pen technique before jumping into digital only. Great video.
