Satellite Pollution - night sky ruined by satellites :/ Amazing time-lapse

It's unimaginable how many artificial satellites are polluting our sky!
In this time-lapse video I show part of the western and eastern sky (field of view approx. 45 °).
The two photos at the end of the video are single frames exposed 150 seconds each. These photos explain why artificial satellites reflecting the light of the sun are a problem for astronomers and astrophotographers. Unfortunately, due to the construction of mega-constellations in orbit around the Earth, there will be more and more satellites.

All the 'satellites' in your video moved in straight lines, BUT what i witnessed strangely was a 'star' moving in multiple different directions across the entire sky and then back to its original location and remained stationary. I don't think satellites move like what i witnessed. What do you think?

Thanks to this page I realize we aren't being invaded. I sat down in my lawnchair for the first time in a while and thought I was witnessing a very fast plane or UFO. it was actually cool/got the binoculars out and watched satellites for a half hour. We had amazingly clear skies in NEW HAMPSIRE and a dark sky so in the 30 minutes I saw at least ten. I made wishes thinking they were falling stars/meteors. That was more fun. If any wishes come true I'll be back..

Well once the sun has set for a longer time this isn't a problem, only a couple of hours after sunset and a few hours before sunrise isn't it? You cant see the ISS late at night. I know the easiest response is no one wants to stay up to 1am to take pics....... but is there enough ambient light around very late to still cause this? Just asking caus I dont do photography...
@MrSuperMole
@MrSuperMole 2 жыл бұрын
Satellites (including the ISS) can be seen at any time of the night - visibility depends on where they are flying in the sky and how high they are above the Earth. They just can't be in the shadow of the Earth :)

So are satellites visible to the naked eye? I ask because I’ve been seeing what looks like a star moving across the sky but they don’t appear to be higher than 20-25k feet. They definitely aren’t airplanes. Maybe they’re higher than what they appear? They last using/visible usually for about 1-3 minutes. Some fade in and out and in and out but still visible and them completely disappear.
@astroroadshow
@astroroadshow 9 ай бұрын
Yes your 'moving stars' are satellites. Most are irregular in shape. If it rotates then the brightness will alter over a regular period. They can seem to fade in and out. The Earth's shadow also plays a part. Depending uponthe satellite's altitude, your latitude and date, they can be seen to fade above you as they have entered the shadow. hope this helps. I even have a book out on the subject on Amazon.. Satellite Spotting and Operations Handbook.

@keefmack

Some you can follow their entire trajectory while there are some that seem to just fade away yet with no clouds to obscure them. What causes this?
@MrSuperMole

They disappear because they fly into the Earth's shadow and also set themselves at a different angle to the Sun, thus reflecting its light in a different direction.

@@MrSuperMole My guess has always been a logical explanation. My wife and I have a camp that is very near a ‘dark sky’ designated state park. This past fall on a completely cloudless and moonless night in just a few hours laid in lawn chairs staring at the sky and there were hundreds of satellites, more than we have ever seen and didn’t see that many the next night. We could see many planes of course at various altitudes, small planes, jets etc. The satellites were crossing the sky very consistently horizon to horizon while others would get to near the same spot and just fade away. You could see stars behind those spots where they faded and some planes and other satellites that traversed very near the spot where the others disappeared. We would watch the trajectory to see if they would show up again if they continued the flight path and none of those that disappeared, no matter which direction, north, south east or west they were headed when they disappeared, ever were visible again. All disappearing in the exact same spot. If you held out your arm the spot was the size of your thumbnail. We were surprised how many satellites flew from all directions to that exact spot and disappeared. We jokingly call it the ‘vortex where satellites disappear. The very next night it never happened one time and we saw maybe 1/25 the number of satellites and the sky was the same, crystal clear night, no moon.

@@keefmackman the night sky really fascinates me specially when some things just don’t have a clear explanation or any at all! Like some “stars” I’ve seen that stop and move pausing and resuming and not going in a clear orbit Turing almost 90 degrees even! It’s so weird and kinda scary too. I live in saudi where the skys are always clear and light pollution is easy to avoid just going in any roadtrip or small town that is surrounded by nothing other than an ocean of sand and a beautiful clear sky.
