Interesting. You showed a few Azalea's that I've never seen before. Personally, I always replant (and cut) Azalea's immediately after flowering, which is in (late) springtime in these regions (Western Europe). It is said that the growing and regrowing power of these trees (or bushes) is the strongest during that period (after flowering). I guess there are different methods. For me, cutting and replanting after flowering works the best for quite a few decades now. I'm not sure but perhaps giving the plant a chance to complete it's growing cycle (including flowering), serves it well. I never plant them in a shallow pot: in my experience, Azalea's love to grow in at least a bit deeper pots. They cannot survive drying out completely because their roots will dy very quickly. They also dislike drinking water (from the tap) in these areas because that contains too much calcium. So I only give them rainwater. I use mainly Kanuma, mixed with a bit of slightly acid peat as growing medium. I try to keep them always at least a bit moist and never ever let them dry. When the flowers occur, I keep them in a rather shady place: the beautiful flowers will last much longer then. A few weeks before the flowers will open, I quit fertilizing and I start again a few weeks after replanting when I have cut the roots. When rootcutting was not needed, I start fertilizing again, immediately after cutting back. For your garden stair step: perhaps ad a few (smaller) flat stones as a top layer? Good luck, Kimi!

Question: will you be trying to make a Chrysanthemum bonsai? In Japan there is a world renowned bonsai master: Tameji Nakajima who has perfected this art. I have his book with some fantastic pictures of his works with Chrysanthemums.
