This is actually a pretty good take on Saturday Night Fever. Silly but a good take. I always suspected the racial /ethnic component of this movie was underplayed and not discussed much because it's not usually considered when this film gets talked about. Fundamentally Tony hates his neighborhood and wants to get the hell out . That drives everything his character does in the movie

Royal Carribean has performers who do "Saturday Night Fever" play on their cruise lines. Saw it on the "Liberty of the Sea" on the way to Bermuda last year. Went to it thinking it would be mediocre, cheesy, it was one best live performances I've ever seen. The dancing elite, exrodinairy singing, acting, delighted by the show, amazing talent, they did a great job with the story. Performers from Columbia played the Puerto Rican dance team and they were absolutely awesome! Broadway level talent on a cruise ship. If you get a chance to see it don't miss it!

The way Saturday Night Fever get sold on stuff is kind of hilarious. When it gets talked about it’s like the disco movie, its fun disco sequences with the Bee Gees music. If you have seen it, but you’ve heard it talked about on TV, you might think the tone is similar to other big dancing movie it gets brought up alongside like Dirty Dancing and Footloose. The way it mostly gets talked about you’d think it was Grease. But the main group in Saturday Night Fever are a bunch of dirty bags, they’re not as bad (or fun) as the gang in A Clockwork Orange, but they’re not too far off either. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen A Bronx Tale, but I want to say Saturday Night Fever is kind of like A Bronx Tale with disco.

I asked chatgpt to write me a scenario that the exorcist and Saturday night fever are in the same universe: Here's a fun scenario imagining "Saturday Night Fever" and "The Exorcist" in the same universe: --- **Title: Disco Demons** **Setting: New York City, 1977** **Premise:** Tony Manero, the charismatic young man from Brooklyn who lives for the weekends when he can rule the dance floor at the 2001 Odyssey disco, begins to notice strange occurrences around the neighborhood. The local church, where his brother Frank Jr. used to serve before leaving the priesthood, becomes the center of rumors about bizarre happenings-doors slamming on their own, strange voices echoing in the halls, and an unsettling feeling of dread that has swept over the congregation. **Characters:** - **Tony Manero:** After Frank Jr. leaves the priesthood, Tony has a newfound respect for spirituality, albeit in his own unconventional way. He begins to sense something off in the community, especially around his beloved club. - **Father Damien Karras:** Haunted by the events in Georgetown with the exorcism of Regan MacNeil, Karras is on a personal quest for redemption. He comes to New York to visit old friends, including Father Dyer, and to escape the traumatic memories that continue to plague him. - **Father Dyer:** A mutual acquaintance of Tony's family and Karras, Dyer senses a growing evil spreading through the streets of New York and calls on Karras for help. - **Frank Manero Jr.:** Having recently left the priesthood, Frank is struggling with his faith and his identity. When he starts experiencing unexplainable visions and disturbing dreams, he finds himself pulled back into the world he tried to leave behind. **Plot:** As Tony prepares for an upcoming dance competition, he notices his friends and fellow club-goers behaving oddly, as if possessed by something other than the usual disco fever. People are more aggressive, fights break out for no reason, and a sense of darkness seems to creep into the once vibrant disco scene. Meanwhile, Frank Jr. has started visiting the church out of nostalgia, where he runs into Father Karras. The two strike up a conversation, and Frank shares that his brother Tony has been seeing strange things lately. Father Karras, sensing a familiar evil, decides to investigate further. He visits the disco and notices that something isn't right-strange, almost subliminal chants play in the background of the music, and some dancers move in an almost trance-like state, as if controlled by an unseen force. Father Karras realizes that the demonic presence he fought in Georgetown may not have been fully vanquished and is now spreading through New York, using the disco's pulsating energy as a conduit. As the night of the dance competition approaches, Tony becomes more paranoid, feeling as though he's being watched. He confides in Frank, who then introduces him to Father Karras. Together, they uncover that a demon has infiltrated the disco scene, feeding off the high emotions and chaotic energy of the dance floor. The final showdown occurs on the night of the competition, where Tony, backed by Frank and Father Karras, must dance to a remixed track of disco hits and exorcism prayers to banish the evil once and for all. **Climax:** The competition reaches a fever pitch as Tony battles the demon on the dance floor. The crowd, unaware of the supernatural battle taking place, cheers wildly, thinking it’s all part of the performance. Father Karras performs a stealth exorcism behind the DJ booth, chanting prayers as Tony executes his moves with more intensity than ever. The music builds to a crescendo, the lights flicker wildly, and with one final spin, Tony breaks the demon’s hold over the disco. **Ending:** The lights return to normal, the music fades, and the crowd roars with applause, none the wiser to the battle that just took place. Tony, exhausted but triumphant, nods to Father Karras, who quietly exits the disco. Frank Jr. finds new faith in himself and decides to rejoin the church, while Tony goes on to become a legend on the dance floor, knowing that for one night, his passion for dancing saved the city from a much darker fate. --- This scenario blends the disco energy of "Saturday Night Fever" with the supernatural tension of "The Exorcist," creating a unique crossover where faith, music, and a battle against darkness converge on the dance floor.

Saturday Night Fever was a very good coming of age drama/ dance film . The only problem is that the film became more of a cultural phenomena and societal icon of the time. So I would argue people don't really know the movie itself just hype and hyperbole.
@Colorcrayons6 ай бұрын
I think you are correct about that. I know I judged it solely around just the hype, but Gene Siskel loved the movie so much that he owned Travolta's suit from the competition. I always wondered why the hell a seasoned movie critic would like a movie to that degree (and still do, but thats neither here nor there) and wondered what he saw that I didnt. And the truth was, because he actually saw the movie, where I was just a dumb kid poking fun at it because of the hype around it without ever once seeing it beyond a couple clips. Once I saw the movie, my mind was changed. I still dont think it is a masterpiece, but I do think it was a competent film that told a pretty good story in the way most late 70's films began to progress into. So yeah, this film is a victim of its hype, even to this day, 4 decades later.
@writeralbertlanier34346 ай бұрын
@Colorcrayons Yeah you make some good points here. I heard about Gene Siskel buying the suit from Roger Ebert whom I knew a little years ago. I guess Gene was a fan of the film or at least of the suit. LOL.
