I think in the first skit Nate relied heavily on cue cards which kind of made him appear to be gazing off in the distance while yearning for distant freedoms. It also slowed down the cadence of his responses. That elevated the comedy (perhaps by accident. ). They carried that over well in skit 2.

A looong time fan of SNL here (born in 74, I'm celebrating 50 like SNL). Through the years, at times hosts and cast have come off as pretentious or trying too hard for the laughs. I don't like saying that as a fan, but, my opinion. Nate's delivery isn't impeccable, but as other comments said, it's natural. Reminds me of Belushi a bit. People are hungry for that kind of honesty in humor, culture, politics..in general. We've been spoon-fed canned laughter and pre-packaged bullshit so long, we're choking on it. Great job, guys. Hope to see more of it. And Happy Anniversary to a show that I'm so happy I grew up on. Five decades, amazing. Can't wait to see Saturday Night! Thanks for all the memories ~ ❤

@@juliannehannes11 Black people aren't exactly in love with living in the mountains it turns out. Also no no no no no, it was Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and every Northern state in 1804 including Martha Washington freeing her slaves in 1802. The real POINT is not only is that damning proof that these were good people wanting change (the first abolitionist movement was the Quakers in the 1600s.) but that there were always people to trust. Boston, infamous for being illogically racist at times during the 1970s (makes sense, as the Malcolm killings had many people up in arms and of course rumors and media spreading via television news) sent out a warning to all negro lives in 1851 or so, saying to watch out for fake policemen who were actually commissioned to bring slaves back to the south under the guise of an arrest. Genuinely worry for Boston and how they adressed the real citizens of Boston whom were negro, it was almost touching.
