@@alexbuss3377 St. Louis was originally built and settled by the French. It was built because the Missouri River joins the Mississippi River just north of St. Louis. Meanwhile its easy for a somewhat experienced person to row a boat across the Mississippi River, at St. Louis, where both sides of the river are rather flat unlike further south where the Missouri side has lots of cliffs and hills. As the United States began to grow, river traffic grew to be extremely important and people moving west would use the Mississippi and Missouri rivers to travel, that made St. Louis grow as people passed to and fro through the area. As industrialization came to the US, St. Louis was one of the cities at the front of industrialization, due to its location. It would be cheaper to build a factory in St Louis near the river, where products could be loaded onto barges and taken to various areas of the country. It could be argued that St. Louis is at the tail end of the Rust Belt. Also south of St. Louis is a number of old iron and lead mines, which being close to a major river town and later industrialized town helped keep St. Louis growing as raw materials poured in. Later with the growth of the agriculture industry in northern Missouri, most corn shipments east went through St. Louis. St. Louis is home to the first bridge built across the Mississippi River, that bridge led to others being built near St. Louis and the railroad companies quickly saw St. Louis as a major center to cross the river with trains. Thus the railroads began building up in and near St. Louis and with raw materials being nearby and the factories, trains started being built and repaired in St. Louis. Around the same time the beer industry began to grow in St. Louis. A large number of Germans moved to Missouri in the 1800s, mostly German Lutherans who disagreed with the Prussian Government starting to tell pastors what they could and couldn't say, and the Prussian Government changing or restricting the works of Martin Luther the theologian. Because of that, a large number of Lutherans moved to St. Louis and a big seminary was built. Also a large number of German Catholics moved to St. Louis because of the Prussian Government restrictions on Catholic Germans. These Germans brought much architecture to parts of Missouri and Illinois and they also brought beer production. Soon a number of breweries were built in St. Louis and they benefited from the massive infrastructure in place. As the automobile industry grew, due to existing industry and infrastructure, St. Louis was picked as a major city for car production, outside the Great Lakes area. Ford, GM, and Chrysler all built large factories in St. Louis. During both World Wars, St. Louis was a major city for production and the transportation of materials. In the 50s, the growth of interstates was beneficial as two of the first interstates built, I70 and I55 not only go through St. Louis but intersect. Lastly with the growth of the aircraft industry after World War II, St. Louis was the location for a major aircraft production plant, which still exists in St. Louis today and is a major employer for the area. As industrialization began to decline, St. Louis was hit hard, the decline of industry led to a decline in production. The decline in production led to a decline in traffic on the rivers, roads, railways, and bridges. This led to a decline in employment and the movement of people. Like most Rust Belt cities St. Louis suffered population decline as people moved further west or south to the still growing Sunbelt. Today St. Louis is no longer in the top 10 major American cities, crime has fallen after a peak in the 90s, but still remains a big issue. Crime grew in St. Louis mostly because industry collapsed and everyone that could move did move, and the older population with money died out. By the 80s, even poorer minority families were leaving St. Louis, which caused crime to grow bigger as the vacant buildings and declining city budget helped crime and drugs grow. The situation got so bad that with a large number of Bosnian refugees fleeing the war in Europe in the late 90s, the Federal Government sent lots of Bosnians to St. Louis to help the population decline. This growth in Bosnian people in St. Louis has not always been welcomed by the locals. Today St. Louis still is a center for river travel and cross country road or rail travel. The AB brewery remains one of the largest in the world, and the aircraft industry is still operating. Crime has decreased but still remains high, especially in the northern part of the city. Steel, automobile, and most other industries are either gone or significantly reduced. Energy production, chemical production, pharmaceutical production, and financial services remain the biggest industries in the city, along with a growing tech and personal service industry. Movie filming is a industry that St. Louis has to offer due to its cheap location and late Victorian brick buildings and some cobblestone roads remaining. Other that, the state and city have pushed tourism and have been trying to get shipping companies to come to St. Louis to use the centralized location for the easy shipment of goods, but Memphis and Chicago are too close to build a major center in companies minds. However St. Louis has the best National League baseball team, and one of the better National Hockey League teams in recent years.

@@mikedeguzman6006 Here's an explanation of almost all of the jokes in the video. Might be a little long & some may be up for interpretation but I've tried to keep things pretty general. I'm going to use Wikipedia to summarize the conflict that this sketch is based off of, so no one can call me biased. "On August 9, 2014, Michael Brown Jr., an 18-year-old African American man, was fatally shot by 28-year-old white Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in the city of Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis." The shooting quickly became an issue of an unarmed black man being shot by a white police officer, which some say was becoming a trend. There were two different accusations of racism surrounding the shooting: 1) Darren was racist toward Mike, which caused him to shoot him, 2) the American justice system is biased against Black men which is why cops often got away with shooting unarmed black men. (Again, I'm commenting on this as neutrally as possible.) In the wake of the shooting there was rioting. Now, for the jokes: 0:30-1:06 - In the wake of the event and the uproar it's causing across the city, they don't want to do their "rise and smile" segment. This is likely because the city has been in such state that there isn't much else to report but the turmoil that's been going on. Reporting it in a segment called "rise and smile" would seem inappropriate. 1:11 - They want to just push through the segment because of everything that's been happening. 1:14 - Riots were happening. She's referencing having to defend her property from the rioters. 1:27 - "It's being called the most superior race in town..." Racist white people often refer to themselves as the "superior race" (the Nazi's had an idea of a "master race") so the joke was that they were having Keenan (the black host) say that something was going to be the superior race. It's ironic. 1:33 - She said "the Blackies" instead of the "Black Keys." "Blackies" can be a rude name for black people (like saying "the blacks" instead of "black people"), so it was meant to be a funny slip of the tongue. 1:49 - The traffic is bad because there are riots and people protesting in the streets. 2:16-2:25 - He would rather be somewhere else because of all of the violence and controversy that's happening in Ferguson but because he booked his tour so far in advance, he can't change it. 2:35 - There are two parts of an egg: the egg whites and the egg yolks. Often, people only cook with egg whites because the egg yolks contain cholesterol. Also, the word "colored" is a derogatory word for people of color (but especially Black people) in the United States. So, the joke was that given what was happening in the city, the chef should use the whole egg, instead of using only the white parts (thereby throwing out the "colored" yolks), even though that would make the dish healthier. 2:47 - "And who am I to argue with the grand jury?" At this time there were a string of high-profile cases of police officers or other white men (exclusively white men) shooting unarmed black men & not being found guilty FOR WHATEVER REASON OR ANOTHER. In Mike Brown's case, the grand jury did not indict Darren Wilson for his shooting. For many people, this was a case of injustice. So when he says "Who am I to argue with the grand jury?" the joke is that he's saying the grand jury was right to not indict Darren Wilson (which is a controversial opinion). 2:54 - The internet never lets you forget things. He said it and no matter how he meant it, their show was always going to be remembered for saying something that, out of context, sounds extremely offensive. 3:09 - His name is the name of the cop involved in the shooting. 3:43 - She's left to Chicago to get away from the madness in Ferguson & she isn't coming back. 4:06 - Remember, since he has the last name as the cop, it comes out as if he's saying that he (the cop) is innocent of the shooting. Remember, this was very controversial (still is). The police officer claimed to have shot & killed Mike in self-defense, making him the victim, not the man he killed. 4:29-4:36 - "We didn't start the fire. We didn't light it but we tried to fight it." Again, rioting was happening, some businesses (at least one) were set on fire. Ferguson was akin to a city burning to the ground, as it's citizens were seemingly at odds with each other and people were fed up. They want them to sing another song because it it's sort of like singing "London Bridge is Falling Down" while standing on a collapsing bridge. It just feels inappropriate. Anyway, hope this helped!

This is one of the funniest skits I've ever seen on SNL, and it was cut for time! And yet the jokes were so mellow and inoffensive too. This would have made it one of the safest skits to air!
@SweetEssie Жыл бұрын
@@Creshex8I think it was probably offensive to the family of Michael Brown. Cringe worthy. I'm glad it didn't air but also glad it could be seen here.
@Creshex8 Жыл бұрын
@@SweetEssie What about it being offensive to the officer Wilson? Wasn’t he the only innocent party in that whole fiasco (literally according to Obama’s justice department)? Michael Brown robbed a store while high and assaulted a cop. His stepfather told people to burn the city down… why do we prioritize their feelings exactly?

All I can say is... I live in St. Louis and I did chuckle at this. I don't think the intention was to bash anyone and honestly.... I think a lot of us here need a little comedic relief. I am in NO WAY saying that what happened and is happening is funny... it is all very serious. But we all poke fun at each other in life, and at situations. This actually improved my mood today. And no matter if you find it offensive or not, you have to admit that this is good comedic writing and performance.

Ashleigh Holmes the sketch is about racial tension in St. Louis. They play out the morning after racial unrest and rioting. From the standpoint of a morning news program the next day. The jokes are intentional shots at the program in progress because the news and media must tread lightly. Because people are so easily offended.
