Beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing this. 3 days ago I was busy pulling up weeds in the field when I thought I saw a bird on the grass in our neighbours field. Yet it did not really look like a bird. I walked down and was astonished to see it was a moth ! I put my hand behind the grass stem and found the wings went way past my hand. I went back to the weeding but kept going back for another look. I had made a track through the long grass so I was able to show my husband. Though his wings were not fully open by then. It did not take me long to find out what I had seen. For once I did admit to the helpfulness of a computer :) i live near Pau in the S. W. France. When we first arrived there were so many butterflies and moths Seeing a swallow tail would be almost a daily treat. In the garden we have an old silk tree, and we watched what we thought were bats flying around the top yet they could not have been. I now realize that it must have been this beautiful moth. I saw one swallowtail this year, the first time for 8 years. The caterpillars were always seen on the wild fennel. I planted many plants and shrubs to encourage wild life, but there is no where near the number as before, also birds. Our neighbours farms have both gone bio and I keep hoping that things will change. It is heartbreaking to thing that these exquisit moths only live for a week. I shall treasure this memory. Thank you again.

Hello Adam, Again you got an exceptional documentation of the metamorphosis of another butterfly specie. The curling movements of the caterpillar, is it done in order to straighten the bristles? Thanks for sharing Rüdiger
@groszek13you9 жыл бұрын
Hallo Rüdiger. I observed the phenomena of rotation of the caterpillar body directly after moulting. Also for Arcta caja, most saturniids etc. Yes, you are right. I also think that it is also for straighten the bristels, but maybe it can remove the debris remains of the moult in such complex shape of the body. I will try to observe the phenomena on the other species. Thank you that you noticed this interesting moment. Regards from sunny morning in Krakow, Adam
