Why use the Saucer Magnolia in your landscape?...It's got incredible scented tulip-like blooms that appear in the cool season, so when other plants are still dormant, this small tree packs a massive visual punch! It's best in Sometimes called Chinese Magnolia, it works great in Zen gardens, but is also cross-stylistic and can work in cottage and traditional style landscapes as well. Landscapers and garden enthusiasts love this tree not only because of it's mind-blowing sweet-scented flowers, but it's also easy to grow, fairly low maintenance, and can tolerate a variety of soil types. Use it in a courtyard where a smaller profile tree is desired. Since they don't have invasive roots like some trees, they can be planted in closer proximity to houses walls and fences (within reason). They are most often seen in a multi-trunk form at the nursery, and are sold in a variety of sizes including 5 gallon, 15 gallon, 25 gallon, and 24 inch box.
Prune the branches to keep an airy open canopy and remove any cross branches to keep a neat form. Alexandrina and Rustica Rubra are other popular varieties.
