Going back to the Sing-Off, I’m always stuck by the love Shawn has for PTX, original cheerleader, dubbing Meat & Potato, calling out the flugelhorn….then seeing PTX come back for the end of Season 4 & 5, seeing the pure joy on his face when we all saw the progress made by PTX during their performances, seeing Kevin play with BTM last year, seeing liner notes for the flugelhorn in PTX albums…such fun!
@ruth21412 жыл бұрын
Scott was also increasingly being featured in the combined group performances at the beginning of each show. Kirstie got some features too, but the other three were just part of the background singers. And as for rapping, bear in mind that Mitch had just got out of a Texas suburban high school where he got teased. You can see Mitch and Kirstie growing in confidence as the show progresses. and if you watch the season 4 episode where PTX guest stars you can see a huge difference.
@Lupin7882 жыл бұрын
Mitch also got a few featured solos in the mega group performances but you're right that Scott and Kirstin were showcased more. The show's producers wanted each group to designate a main lead singer and a secondary lead singer. All of the groups' beat boxers and bass singers were mostly relegated to support in these large numbers, though Kevin got to showcase his "flugelhorn" in the same episode where he did it for their Janis Joplin cover.

This was probably the most memorable performance from this run they had on the show for me. Not saying it was their best because they had so many. But there was something about this song that I always remembered. Man they crushed this!!! I knew at the time that they were special but I probably wouldn't have guessed that them as a group and as individuals would have blown up like they have today. I knew they could, but I just wasn't sure how well the mainstream would embrace acapella music. But 641 million views on Hallelujah?? That is amazing and sooooo deserved. They are so amazingly talented, they deserve everything.

This one was exactly what Ben Folds called it, primal. The deep bass from Avi, that steady, slow rhythm from Kevin, the high, light, minor harmonies from Mitch and Kirsty, then...THEN...Scott and those power vocals. That one was a very special performance, for sure. Lots of fun reliving these performances with you, man. I can't wait for the next one!

If you keep an eye on the other contestants, after PTX sing, you will often see them looking quite shocked. That tells you how good they were from the get go and they only got better as they settled into and found their true style and magic. They always go to Scott cos the show wanted him to be the lead of the group so he was usually seen as the star turn although obviously they were all great. And on that... did you know that Home Free tried to get on the show twice, (they were NOT a country group at the time, they were doing pop with a couple of country songs in the mix), and failed but on their third try the producers told them that if they tried out as a country group they would almost certainly get on the show. They did. They got on the show and the rest is history.

As for Scott’s prominence, this was the season of the frontman. Every group had a designated “star,” and Scott was PTX’s. The group who came in second did have the individual solo standout from the season, even more than Scott-Michael O had charisma just oozing out of his pores, as well as an amazing voice. By the end though, the judges’ notes on his group was “Michael and the rest of the group ,” whereas Pentatonix had notes on everyone.

Also the show's producers did not know what to do with Mitch. He didn't fit the image they wanted, his counter-tenor range was something they (mistakenly) felt audiences would not understand, so you can see that for most of the show he is singing in his lower register when he is featured. Until later in the show when I feel like PTX and Ben Bramm just decided, screw this, we're showing off our Mitch.

What Kevin and then Avi are doing at the 6:00 minute mark is mind-blowing!! First, Kevin is snarling out, “Na na na”s, then Avi does that amazing descent of notes-oh, so good!! As for the not-rapping choice, I think they did that not because they were afraid to rap, but to make themselves stand out because everyone else WAS rapping. Urban Method was thought to have this week sewn up just because they had a rapper in their ensemble, but their performance ended up being a bit lackluster. Pentatonix was the group that had my online forum buzzing this week, even more so than the Video Killed performance did the week before.
@Lupin7882 жыл бұрын
As we now know from their work since The Sing-Off, Mitch, Scott, Kirstin and Kevin (as well as Matt) can rap very well. The Trio were only 19 during this competition and had likely never performed any rap publicly. Kevin's musical performance career at the start of The Sing-Off consisted of cello and beatboxing. I think they decided against doing rap because they weren't super confident they could pull it off well, plus one of their competitors (Urban Method) featured an actual rapper.

It’s always so interesting to me how the judges always said techno futuristic acapella is kinda their niche because they hadn’t done any slow kinda emotional ballads on the show (in my opinion). If only they knew what was coming. Stuff like Hallelujah or Imagine etc etc come to mind. They have such a range that they can do techno edm like Daft Punk, pop like Cheerleader, or slow harmonious songs like Run To You. Even with high expectations, I was gobsmacked. This is my favorite performance, though two or three later ones might be even better, this is where every one of them showed me the versatility and showmanship of performers with decades of experience, and the vocal abilities of pretty much nobody else in the world. This is also where they showed me I would NEVER not be shocked and amazed by them. I am pretty sure at this point Mitch didn't KNOW he could rap, lol. Silly Mitch not realizing how limitless he is. I wish I could go back and show him himself even just a couple years later. In the Superfruit where they watch Sing Off performances, Mitch says, "If only she could see herself, now." Seriously, I wish she could have. We've heard all of them rap since then, lol, except maybe Avi, unless I missed something along the way. I'm sure he could if he wanted to, if he wasn't too busy throwing down the delicious, nasty bass for the others to rap to, lol.

I don’t think they reaaaally tried hard to hide Mitch’s ”gayness” like they might’ve cut some parts for the trevor project but that doesn’t mean anything let’s not make assumptions when we have no clue of the show being against LGBT or whatever. On the other hand Mitch WAS for sure restraining himself to show too much because he was shy, (it took him a while to even sing in front of his parents), he had frequent anxiety attacks, he just got out of HS where he was picked on as you guys said all of that made him not confident enough to expose the full range of his talent but you see here he was singing in his higher range they didn’t say anything bad about it they even complimented it so please stop saying they forced Mitch to sing lower that is obviously just rumors. I don’t think they would even show the trevor project if they wanted to hide all evidences. So yeah I really don’t think they pushed it on Mitch.

I’m a little late to the Saucey Fam Party, but have been a Pentaholic since they performed on the show. I believe part of the reason they didn’t rap was because of Kevin’s religious beliefs. In “OMG” (a later performance) they talk about him not being comfortable with a song being Oh My God, so they do Oh My Gosh instead. If he’s not comfortable with something, his heart won’t be in it and it will bring the group as a whole down, so they do their best to accommodate everybody!

I think part of what made it hard on their decision to not rap is because each performance was limited on time to about 2.5 minutes (instead of 3-4 minutes like songs typically are). So if they had a full time slot I think they would've added in a bit of rap from Mitch too.
