The backstory is (not sure of the source) that they did not do very well in the dress rehearsal / staging before the show. They had resigned themselves to 2nd place or lower finish. Scott had lost his voice, the rest were tired from the weeks of long days preparing, practicing, then performing. Scott's vocal fry / crack at the end was his voice giving out, but he pushed on through to the end. This is truly a "we've got nothing to lose, let's go for it performance". Simply amazing.

The story about the disastrous rehearsal came directly from them. Check out the video of their guest performance on _The Sing-Off_ in 2012. They went and talked with all the finalists before their performances, and that's what they told Home Free.

Any performer will tell you the holy grail of performing is when you hit the sweet spot and all the stars are aligned and everyone is on the exact same page and honest to god magic happens. This is one of those performances. I watched this live 10 years ago and still get emotional listening to it. Especially knowing the background now. Mitch being bullied in HS and how much anxiety he had being on the show. The dress rehearsal that was off key and a hot mess. Scott losing his voice earlier in the day/week. They thought for certain they were going to lose. Many great performances during their sing off run, but this one is special.

That tension in Avi at the end of the song that Ben mentions was actually Avi realizing that they hadn't lost after all - the dream was still alive. Notice that the first thing Mitch does after the song ends is to hug Avi, because Avi really needed a hug then. It turns into a group hug of Mitch, but it began as a comforting hug for Avi.

This performance is pure want and fight. With everything going against them at that time (I'm sure others will fill in long comments with it) this is pure want pushing out all they had to give right on that stage. People who were present when they filmed that said you could feel it in the air.
@pacio492 жыл бұрын
And now, consider... they won. They moved to LA. And 2 weeks later, their record deal was cancelled because the label didn't think there was an audience for a capella. They continued anyway, and they leveraged Holiday Albums shared over the new platform KZbin, and won three Grammys and have their most popular video, Hallelujah, with over half a billion views. (And remember to keep things in perspective - a million seconds is about 11 days. A billion seconds is 32 years. Their popularity is staggering, and it was largely due to the group's willingness to believe in themselves at the ripe young age of 20.)

This performance is exactly who Pentatonix is. This one is who we would all come to know over the past decade and love. They took every piece of advice they were given, every critique, every performance trick they knew and threw it out there. THIS is where the won the competition. Yeah, yeah, yeah they still had one more performance. So what? They could've come out on stage and just stood there and they STILL would've won after this. Now, on to the aftermath. Yes, as we know, they won this season. That's great! They've made it! Didn't they? They got the money, they got the recording contract, so...they're set, right? Nnnnnot so much. They had to spend most of the money they won on the show paying for copies of their album to be produced. Once it was recorded, of course. And, they had to pay for studio time TO record said album. Those things aren't cheap, and they're NOT covered by the label, either. Not in the contract offered to newly minted groups, at least. Then, once the album was produced, once copies of it were purchased, now you have to pay for marketing!! Yay! Now, I'm sure that SOME of those costs were paid for by Sony. Just nowhere near as much as one would think. And, not even close to all of it. Then, to make matters worse, Sony dropped them as soon as their album, the album they were contractually obligated to produce because of the show, was finished. So...that was fun while it lasted. Which means, of course, that Pentatonix gave up and went home to live lives of obscurity. Oh, wait, NO they didn't!!!! They did what no one expected them to do. They put in WORK. They covered EVERYTHING. Posted their covers on EVERYTHING. Offered to sing at EVERY award show. Went to EVERY venue they could wrangle an invite to. And, they sang. They sang everything, everywhere, all the time. Radio shows, talk shows, morning shows, late night shows, award shows, old folks homes, I think they even did a mall opening. And, they used the contacts they made while on the Sing Off to do that. After awhile of throwing themselves out there, they started to gain a bit of traction. Their covers were getting noticed. Their performances were getting noticed. Then, finally, Daft Punk happened. After that they couldn't be ignored again. They won a Grammy with a video it cost them less than $400 to make, for crying out loud!! How can you ignore that?! So, that is a very brief, and abridged, history of Pentatonix post Sing Off. Hope that was helpful.

The first true Mitch Slap™. Scott, true to form, was an absolute beast (despite being close to losing his voice from the strain), the background harmonies were perfect, and of course, the "Meat & Potatoes" of the rhythm and bass from Kevin & Avi drove it all from start to finish. I think they absolutely had this won after "Let's Get it On", but this was a spectacular cherry on top of the sundae to blow away any hope that the other groups might have still had.
@mmg88232 жыл бұрын
During Season 4, Pentatonix came to visit the three finalisst, including Home Free. I think you would enjoy seeing them together. While talking with another group, they mentioned how they bombed the dress rehearsal for this song. Magically, it all came together. This was the first Mitch slap but, as you know, he has learned how to slap harder. The story goes that the network didn't want Mitch singing solo up front because he sounded gay. Since they were just going for it during this song, they finally put him front and center. The others faded away into the background to let him have the stage.

Even if you don't do a reaction to it, you should watch the video where they announce the winner. I swear, if Nick had drawn out the suspense any more either Mitch or Kirstie would have fainted from the nerves. In later interviews the group has talked about Mitch's severe anxiety during this period, especially for his solo in this performance. When they got to the end of the song and you see everybody kind of dog-pile hugging him, I'm pretty sure it was because he was about to pass out from sheer relief.

This is by far my favorite of their Sing Off performances. I've rewatched it so many times, especially when I just need to lift my spirits. I think this song is when the group realized that if they all drop away and just let Mitch start his part in his once in a generation voice before joining back in to support him, it's stunning. They've used that same "surprise" in several other songs since and it's just as effective, especially in Hallelujah. Big strong build up with all their voices, then drop away to just hear Mitch's clear, crisp angelic tones ringing out. All of them are so incredibly talented and what I like most is there is very little ego. They all are so happy and proud for each other during their solo and standout performances. Scott just beams every time Mitch hits one of his signature high notes. Because I love them all, I always watch their new videos five or six times so I can watch each member individually and just focus on what they are bringing to the song. It never disappoints because every single one of them are vital and bring so much no matter if they are singing lead or backup vocals or holding the whole song together with the bass and percussion. They are truly the greatest at whet they do.

When PTX was formed, 12 hours the day before their audition for the Singoff, they were, in my opinion, a PHENNONIME. I truly believe this, it was fate and karma that brought them together. PTX is still ridiculously amazing with Matt, who adored PTX as very young adult, not knowing what his future would hold. I also want to add that PTX has a way of making you fall in love with them, especially Mitch, just by being their genuine selves, and it is obvious that you are 100% in love.

I love revisiting the Afterbuzz TV post-ep recap/reviews of this show. The show’s hosts start out the season pretty dismissive of PTX, actually saying after ET that they didn’t think they would last too long on the show. By LGIO, they are calling the win for Pentatonix. Every performance starting with Video Killed, they are pointing out the new/interesting thing the group does to stand out, obviously becoming more and more fans of the group. After Dog Days, my favorite of their quotes was, of course, about Mitch: “Where the hell have YOU been?!?!!” They even got press passes for the live finale, and were able to interview the group on the red carpet after their win.

Ok, long post coming but this is the rest of possible Sing Off pentatonix moments. There is 2 (well 3 kind of) performances from the finale night. None of those counted towards the voting. They did Without you, which was riddled with technical issues (they have said they couldn't hear eachother well) and therefore a bit out of tune and such. I personally still like to watch it for the full experience but I know some skip it. Second is the Nick Lachey performance, a bit cringe but still a fun watch. I fully recommend watching the reveal of them as winners. Really fun and a little musical moment as well. After that there was a christmas show. It could be a fun watch but not "mandatory". They do a performance with the 2 other winning groups from the previous seasons. Fun to see how different they are. They also did Mistletoe by Justin Bieber. Not my fav, but cute. They also did a performance with Flo Rida and another group that's kind of fun to watch. For performances from other seasons, they come back for season 4 as you said to do a great "homecoming" guest performance. I say this is "mandatory" and well worth watching. Both for the performance and interactions. They also do a sweet Christmas medley for season 5. (There is also big group opening numbers for all the episodes they were on that are a fun "find the members" thing. But that's for a huge deep dive) Did I miss something?

It wasn't that they wouldn't allow Mitch to take the spotlight, Maz. Mitch WOULDN'T take the spotlight. His confidence was next to nothing at that time. They wanted to let him know that he did an amazing job, which he absolutely did, and that they, even if no one else was, were proud of him and what he had just accomplished. He got a bit of a shot in the arm from Shawn, Sarah, and Ben, but it didn't last long, as you can imagine. But, as we know, he got better. ;)

Pentatonix were invited back as "reigning champion" guest performers on the 4th season of The Sing-Off. However, that season took place TWO years later in 2013. The Sing-Off was never a show that had super high tv ratings but it did well enough in its first two seasons when it was broadcast as a December pre-Christmas show that NBC increased the number of competitors from 10 to 16 and the episode count from 5 to 11. Airing season 3 episodes earlier in the fall (Sept-Nov) brought the show against stronger tv competition and the lower ratings reflected that. The show was actually cancelled in 2012 despite petitions from fans. Meanwhile, PTX's hard work started to show results in late 2012 and 2013. This may have helped convince NBC execs to revive The Sing-Off. For season 4, they reduced the number of groups to 10 and the episode count to 7. They also pushed the airdates all into December (like seasons 1 & 2) and got improved ratings and viewer numbers compared to season 3.

Don’t forget to watch the finale! After all this you need to see them win! ☺️. The episode where they come back and perform is really good too!

Yes they went back on season 4 to perform a song and it's amazing to see the improvement of their sound from this performance to that one

Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this journey with the Pentaholics. Please do react to their return performance at the end of season 4. Once again, Pentatonix includes a surprise element....

Thanks for another great reaction and your journey through the "Sing Off". It has been amazing going back and seeing their raw talent and growth back when they were so young. Yes, Pentatonix, 3rd season champions, made a guest appearance and performance on season 4 of the "Sing Off" (Kirsty actually met Jeremy Lewis from the Acoustikats and started dating him and eventually became engaged to him but they broke up in 2018). I really enjoyed the 4th season as both Home Free and Voice Play were on that season competing against each other. Voice Play was definitely a bit rough in the beginning with Honey as their dominant, lead singer and none of the other members had much of a chance to shine with her as their leader--she really hurt their chances of winning and the issues the judges had were centered around Honey. Both Voice Play and the Acoustikats were eliminated halfway through on the 5th episode after a face off with each other and Home Free went on to win the 4th season of "Sing Off". If you react to the 4th season, you will probably want to check out both Home Free and Voice Play. You look great so I am assuming your dental appointment went well and you are comfortable.

Yes!! Please do Home Free and Voiceplay's Sing-Off journey. It's a much shorter season. You should actually do the opening numbers, too, as they are great!
