13:44 Saudi Arabia is using air strikes recklessly?!?!? As Americans we've got to do something about that blatant appropriation of our culture!!!

Not only let them used it recklessly, we are aiding them by giving them intelligent information and refilling fuels on midair so the plane cans continue to bomb for a longer time. We also aid with the blocked other others from aiding Yemen with food and medicine (if i remember correctly) causing millions to die. I know that a lot of Americans are not aware of this, but there are some who doesn't care because whatever we do is always right.' Edited: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jH-tc6mef6qIeM0

I've watched coverage of this from most of the major news outlets. They've all been asking the same question: "How did they think this wouldn't be noticed?" John Oliver is the first to air my first thought: this is done so obviously, they're clearly sending a message. And they know/think they can get away with it. - and he's a friggin' comedian, not a news reporter. Kudos John
@PDZ10286 жыл бұрын
It's the arrogance of the powerful. The current White House occupant demonstrates it daily (often more than once in a single day). I'm also surprised yet not surprised that many (not all) in the so-called "mainstream media" haven't expressed more concentrated coverage (and editorially, outrage). As for John and Jane Doe, the "average Americans", do they even know where Saudi Arabia is, much less care? (How quickly people have forgotten that 15 of the 19 terrorists responsible for the 9/11 carnage in the USA were Saudi citizens!!!)
@ebdey6 жыл бұрын
So it cant be a set up? Is that 100% off the table? Couldn't they just murder him away from the consulate without causing all this ruckus? How can you carrie judgments without hard evidence? Would put a man in jail based on "c'mon its was clearly you". What about "innocent till proven guilty"? Hypocritical to say the least
@KayzaTotem6 жыл бұрын
@@ebdey In my view all options are on the table, incl. a setup. Several could have the means and reasons to do so. Not sure if Jamal Khashoggi would be a very obvious target though. It also strikes me as a bit far fetched to then do it in that place and manner. If you want to plant evidence for a setup, this simply seems like overkill (in lack of a better word). Furthermore, the Saudi's insistence on Jamal both entering and leaving the consulate without at least trying to provide proof of the latter, seems to further underline that they don't really care that much. And if the Saudi's are indeed behind it, and they simply wanted him dead, there would be much better ways to get away with it. So sure, all options are on the table, but imo sending a strong message seems the most plausible.
@ebdey6 жыл бұрын
The way I see it, Picking the most plausible and speak about it using words such as "clearly" and "obviously" is so close to dismissing scenarios. Lets wait and see how things play out.
@KayzaTotem6 жыл бұрын
Fair point. One has to be careful pointing to the obvious in these days when little is obvious. Again, it was only my first thought. Like yours might have been that it was a setup. I was mostly surprised that the main media only saw it as an incredibly poor cover up (asking how the Saudis could be so stupid), rather than considering it might be deliberately obviously executed - either by the Saudis, or as you suggest, a third party. Again, I find the Saudis' response highly suspicious. Eg. claiming that there's no video proof of him leaving coz their cameras only livestream, when there's recorded footage of him entering. And it's a consulate.. So sure, should be deemed innocent until proven otherwise, but when the whole world is pointing fingers, you'd think they'd do a bit more to claim their innocence than just referring to a Trump'ish "trust me".

John Oliver brings up a good point in regards to oppressive regimes and how much they can get away with. The answer is pretty much anything. Saudi Arabia isn’t the only example here, just look at China. China is currently facing growing criticism over its persecution of some Muslim minority groups (especially Uighur Muslims), huge numbers of whom are allegedly being held in internment camps. Even though they are facing criticism, we all know nothing’s going to happen. China has been know to have human rights violations in the past, and has publicly admitted that if any Country has a problem with its human rights issues, China doesn’t want to do business with them. In a global economy where China is the top leader in manufacturing, no other Country is going to stand up against it and its a sad realization. Oppressive regimes have and always will get away with anything and that’s not going to change unless we all come together and stand up to what we believe is the right thing to do!

Its always 4.20(AM) somewhere. @Amelia Carneiro Zhu Lets be real for a second. Irony and sarcasm really don't work well in *text-only* communication. These are pretty much exclusively spoken language attributes, and requires either very good knowledge of that writer's particular use of language and his/hers affinities, or a very clear context setup. Chatting with friends and family we know their language quirks and affinities intimately, _and_ most often use accompanying imagery to set up, contextualize or point out irony and sarcasm - and even _then_ we some times don't get it. Satire compounds all of these language tools and cues, is _heavily_ contextualized,and _always_ use specific cues to make it clear to the reader/viewer that its satire. Not every reader or viewer might pick up on them, but any half-ass-decent employ these - they _are_ there. And they *need* to be, otherwise any satirist leave themselves wide open to lawsuits and sometimes even prosecution. This one employed none of these. Its just a poor execution of an attempt at a (seemingly sarcastic) joke. I wouldn't say it failed miserably, but it definitely fell flat. That what usually happens when the sarcasm is more important than the joke. Oh well, live and learn. So what if I don't know what "Ragnarok" means. Its not the end of the world.

Prohibitions against depicting the Prophet Mohammed may mystify many non-Muslims, but it speaks to a central tenet of Islam: the worship of God alone. It seems to me that very few people in the news media (liberal, conservative, moderate, or comedian) either sees this as an important issue or (at the very least) feels it is too controversial to discuss it in full detail. Money money money. I live in Spain. The Socialist government almost decided to kind of stop some bomb shipments to Saudi Arabia because of Yemen. Then the Saudis said they'd cancel a contract for some frigates being built in a Spanish shipbuilding yard if the bombs weren't delivered. Suddenly it was "never mind, we'll send you the bombs." The government even justified it by sayjng these were "smart bombs" so they wouldn't hit civilians. The USA is by far the biggest player, but everyone is selling to the Saudis and turning a blind eye at the same time.

About campaign donations. You still think he self-funded? Wake up child. Trump’s campaign brought in about $19.4 million by the end of 2015. Trump contributed nearly $13 million of that himself. Most of the remainder comes from individual contributions, which federal law caps at $2,700 per candidate per election. HE LENDS THE MONEY TO THE CAMPAIGN. And get reimbursed back.

@@rodblues6832 On what do you base this assumption? Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean they don't understand you
@rodblues68325 жыл бұрын
@@exantiuse497you're absolutely right, but in this case, liberals don't even understand what they disagree with. Here's a few examples...after the 2016 election, I heard many shocked liberals exclaim "how could anybody have voted for Donald Trump?" This reveals a major lack of understanding. Even the shock itself was an expression of liberal ignorance toward conservatism. Contrarily, I didn't hear a single conservative say "how could anybody have voted for Hillary Clinton?" This is because conservatives DO understand liberalism. Another example: liberals have taken a few particularly bad elements of conservatism and have taken those things to be the whole. Thus, liberals have lumped all conservatives together into a category of racists, misogynists, homophobes, anti-immigrants, etc. Now don't get me wrong - racism, misogyny, etc. are very real and dangerous attitudes on the extreme right, but most liberals have reduced all conservatism to these undesirable things, which reveals another major lack of understanding. And make no mistake, liberal ignorance is not harmless - now we have the PC police and social justice warriors on the extreme left trying to censor what we can and can't say, which is utterly detrimental to our free society. But is conservatism as a whole racist? Of course not, but the average liberal can't even hear the word "conservative" without conjuring images of torches and white robes. This is because liberals don't understand that the heart of conservatism is not about racism but about the individual liberty that allows them to vote and engage in these arguments in the first place. On the other hand, conservatives have done a rather outstanding job at pointing out the flaws and logical holes of liberal ideology. This is why they can so easily rile up the liberals, which is their favorite form of entertainment. Unfortunately, because liberals do not understand conservative thinking, they have failed to show conservatives the holes in their conservative ideology, even though many such obvious holes exist. Instead they hammer on racism, social injustice, etc, publicly shame people on social media for being "racist," which misses the mark by a long shot. So great is liberal disdain of conservatism that their arguments are always dismissive and never appreciative of the several valuable things about conservatism that have made our country the greatest in world history. Being on the liberal side myself and wishing liberals many future electoral successes, I hope that liberals take some time to re-examine conservative ideology and see if there might be something of value after all.
@exantiuse4975 жыл бұрын
@@rodblues6832 Thank you for a civilized response, I expected insults and nothing to back up your claims, as people tend to react in this channel ;-) I disagree with your first point somewhat, though, people saying "how could anyone vote for Trump" doesn't necessarily indicate lack of understanding and may be an indication of disbelief and anger: "how could this happen, I was so sure we'd win", a defence mechanism of sorts. And on the other hand someone *believing* they understand someone doesn't automatically mean they actually do, they might simply be wrong; Trump's supporters might believe every Hillary Clinton voter is an SJW and therefore voted for a candidate they believe is an SJW, but I think we both agree that not every liberal is an SJW, so the assesment would be incorrect. I don't say you're wrong 100%, I'm not American myself and I haven't spoken to American liberals or conservatives irl, and even if I had that would only be my experience and not statistical fact, so you might well be correct. I just wanted to point out what I think was a flaw in your reasoning. And I'm not denying there are no ignorant and stupid American liberals, I simply don't think the majority of them are that way. This is mainly due to my experiences dealing with Americans in the Internet; I have met many who have proclaimed themselves liberals, who, like you, have expressed a will to understand the other side and have denounced the harmful practices of the extreme left, but more rarely have I met a self-proclaimed American conservative who would express the same understanding towards liberals. Again, I understand this is my personal experience and not statistical fact, but it is why I don't believe American liberals are as ignorant as you say
