@adalgisounoqualunque90335 жыл бұрын
@1,618 φ The reason why you would never do that it's cause you dont live in America and you have no idea whatsoever how the American system works. In the USA you can either purchase the insurance you want or get it by having a job. This is the reason why Obama said "your jobs are not coming back". His objective was to have as many people as possible to be unemployed and on welfare (which reached the highest record ever under him, together with the debt) and then have as many as possible sign on Obamacare. This meant that premiums skyrocketed. Cause more then 20 million people started getting insurance on the back of the taxpayer system. Also Obama made having either private or Obamacare mandatory, or else you would pay the so called Obamacare tax, of some thousand dollars a year. 160 million americans would beg to differ from your idea that that is a dumpster fire, cause if it wasnt, half of the american population would not have private insurance, as they have. Only people who dont want to get a job didnt have health insurance.

Helo! Venezuelan here (feel free to ask any question). I'm glad you guys talked about us - even though our "President" is a joke and our state is deplorable at the moment - and I know there's obviously a shitload of stuff you missed, but the most important and in my opinion the worse thing of this Regime (this isnt a socialist government - this isn't a government, it's a Dictatorship) is the number of people dying everyday from malnutrition and lack of eating. And when I say that, I mean that there are thousands dying, specially the younger generations. *Kids die in hospitals and because of the government crackdown, Doctors aren't allowed to put the cause of death as starvationg (usually putting something like heart attack, or whatever it is that finally did kill them, but the obvious reason for those is starvation)* I hope one day things get better here, but to be honest I'm one of those venezuelans who're trying to escape (looking to leave the country in the course of this year if all goes well). Which hurts and sucks because I love my country, but it´s not even the shadow of what it used to be - and I would know, because I grew up as Chavez rose to power and I saw how things changed for worse every year in my life.
@isabelminerva86326 жыл бұрын
@Atrid Well, there are many varying opinions both on the internet and off. Also, I want to just clarify that you're getting an answer from a 23yo so I was just a toddler when he came to power, but I did grow up noticing the changes in the country. And I'll try to be as unbiased as possible, but it's hard for me on this particular subject. 1. He certainly had a huge following when rising. Politically speaking, his opposing candidate when running for elections made a huge mistake, and that led him to winning the elections with a pretty big number (even my mom voted for him that one time, which she regrets to this day). Not to mention that he made sure to make a lot of "socialist" moves (giving a lot of free stuff to those in lower social classes). 2. Life during Chavez' time wasn't better - it was basically the same as it was before... and then slowly grew to be worse. It was only "better" than Perez Jimenez' time (he was a borderline dictator President during the 4th republic, he did the usual Political police thing, killing some political opposition and whatnot, but nowhere near as bad as Chavez*). As I grew up, what I can tell you changed the most was this: security became worse, as in, there was more delinquency and said delinquency got more and more violent as time passed by; the economic ability people had slowly diminished, and the same goes for quality of life; corruption started to be felt everywhere (you knew a guy who could get you X document done instead of going thru the normal process, for a price; i actually got my license without ever going through any paperwork). I'm sure I'm missing more stuff, but those are the most blatant imo. I think this needs to be prefaced, but our economy has always relied on Oil (big, bad mistake). The thing is, while other presidents sought to put some economic policies, and make jobs or infrastructure or whatever (while obviously stealing some money for themselves), Chavez did not. In fact, he made a big effort to destroy most producers and industries while getting lower classes to rally behind him with classism (hate speech basically? i guess?). He pushed the blame of their social status on those that created jobs and brough food to the supermakets. That in turn partially affects how we're so scarcely supplied for food and most things have to be imported. Well, that and the whole price laws (certain products are forced to be sold at X amount of mney, and that basically means that by selling, companies would be losing money... you can see the problem with that). So when Chavez died, Maduro came to power, the oil price plummeted, and there was no backup (no economic policies, no stash of money for emergency situations). As if it wasn't enough, we also had Maduro putting the whole country in debt to Russians and Chinese for exhorbitant ammounts in exchange for weapons, arms, etc. This because of the protests in 2014 and then later in 2017. And while there's no official proof of this, it's general knowledge that Maduro and its regime depleted the country's Gold Reserves. So really, they milked this country dry and atm we're pretty much a bankrupt country... * _Actually, when Chavez was voted in, people wanted a new face that wasn't related to the 4th Republic or the two main political parties (Copei and AD), mostly because of the corruption. Oh booy did they get that wrong by voting for Chavez_ . 3. I'm adding another disclaimer here because a) I was part of the 2017 protests, and it will play a part in the answer and b) it is a political stance that not all people agree with (both from opposition side, and pro-Maduro side). The opposition technically rallied behind the MUD (Democratic Union Table, if translated word by word). Because we all know that divided we would be less powerful, and our opposition figures were kinda divided up to 2016, they figured it was a good move. If it had been a move without hidden political agendas, it would've been. Before 2016, our opposition leaders (exempting Leopoldo Lopez) were shitty af. In retrospect, that is, because they only had their best interest in mind and not the country's. Leopoldo is the exception, but that is too long of a story to get into. So when in 2017 they banded together we thought it meant a change. Mind you, the protests started naturally from the rest of the society, when the MUD saw that we were gathering a relatively big number of people, they started calling for protests as well. People like to forget that they weren't the ones who came up with the idea, they just jumped into it when it was convenient for them. Now, fast forward a few months, around 150 kids-to-young-adults deaths, and some international viewership. The MUD suddenly calls for us to stop march-style protests. The ANC (basically an illegal National Assembly that was to be made up by Maduro's regime) voting thing shows the amount and scale of cheating they applied to it, from International sources. All good and great. But slowly the MUD cools down the streets. And things eventually go back to normal. ANd then new elections come (regional, state, etc). And the MUD basically uses this whole time of protests as their promotion campaign to get us to vote for them. There's also the "dialogues" they make with the government in other countries. At this point, ther have been a few reputable journalist that have brought to light that quite a few of the MUD members are in cahoots with the Government. So now we don't have the MUD. ANd those "barbaric" resistance groups? Those were just kids, students, wanting a better country, and were led to their deaths basically to serve some BS MUD politicians' agenda. They were venezuelians, guys my age, not some US-pushed agenda (ridiculous). So we no longer have a political figure that can rally us up. Actually, that's mostly the reason I've given up on this changing anytime soon. I saw so many die (one of the most gruesome happened just down my street, actually), I gave my all during those protests and stretching myself thin mentally and emotionally, heck my mother almost got killed because of that! And we got brutally backstabbed by what we thought were people on our side? The depression and disappointment is incredibly big. Inmensely so. I have hopes that one day things will change, but there's a saying that each country gets what its' people deserve. And while half the blame lies on politicians, so does on the rest of the society that didn't move a finger and expected things to be magically saved by a few. Also I'm so sorry this went on for so long. And the fact that I tried to not go into detail as much makes it worse 😅

This is so insane. Thank you so much for your story. It's been really hard to know what news to believe on Venezuela here in the US, or what to make of it. All I really knew was that I was sick of conservatives acting like we would somehow end up the exact same if we voted for Bernie Sanders, as if our countries were identical in every other way. But while we don't fully understand what is going on, I think most of us at least hopefully know that the protestors are just good, desperate people in the worst possible situation, that you got into through not real fault of your own. I think that's the main thing we have in common with you: many of us see the horrible things our government is doing, but we don't have any real power to stop them. We just vote and then cross our fingers, and it's not working. I'm scared for my country and horrified for yours. I hope you and your loved ones are able to get out and go somewhere decent.

There is a difference between "Socialism" and "Social Benefits". Having a state-sponsored health care system doesn't make a country any socialist. It is a social benefit where the country's resources are spent on the welfare of its own citizens. A country can have a proper NHS and still be a healthy capitalist country or not have an NHS and succumb to crony capitalism at the expense of people's lives. It's the decision of citizens what they want. May sense prevail!

It is not a joke for those of us who live in Venezuela the terrible social, economic, political and health crisis. Millions of Venezuelans have seen our quality of life diminish even when working more. Many people are starving to death. Many young people have been killed, imprisoned and tortured by the regime. I do not forget the massacred in the Junquito and the political prisoners. Thousands of people seek medicines that they can not find or can not afford to save their lives. Thousands of pets that have been abandoned to their fate, because their owners can not feed them or have left the country. Worse yet, they have also abandoned children and old people to their fate who migrate desperate due to an unsustainable situation. Thousands of families have had to separate, shops and businesses have closed, schools and universities are deserted, public and private transport have collapsed due to lack of spare parts and lubricants, hospitals can not care for the sick. Worse yet is the total destruction of values, the growth of crime, and the endless situations that I could keep on listing. I never saw destruction of such magnitude on the part of a government. It is a total lack of respect to take this terrible humanitarian crisis as a joke and here every day people are still dying, Venezuelans eat from the garbage in one of the richest countries in the world. Come live in Venezuela and see if it still seems so funny, I've cried each one of those deaths and it isn't a joke!

@@CantEscapeFlorida if you think you're having a bad time in the US just go to Venezuela... You have no idea how lucky you are, to be able to go to your local grocery store and have the possibility of buying bread (an amount for the day only) without having to get in a line for 2 hours, getting tampons or period pads without having to go to 10 drugstores and having to struggle to find money to pay them because they're so expensive. You don't get random calls from prison bosses (and I mean, prisoners who lead the prison) trying to extort you by threatening to kill your family because they have people outside that put their eyes on you because you have a somewhat "comfortable" life. I guess that you haven't been pointed at your head with a gun while waiting on a red light so they can take you and you car, and kidnap you to ask for ransom (common practice over there). Or maybe you have seen your grandma fade and lose her sight to glaucoma because her medicine (easily found in other countries) can't be found in any drugstore, and hear her cry because she can't do anything about it. Never mind the people who have cancer or diabetes and are dying because they can't find the treatment that would be easily accessible in any other country, including the US (expensive, but it's there if you can afford it). Maybe you have also had to wipe your butt with napkins you had to take from your workplace, because -guess what- you can't find either toilet paper nor napkins in the super market. Living there beats your dignity up so much that there's a point where you start dying inside, and little by little, it never stops. You feel hopeless and powerless everyday and depression has become a common situation for a lot of people. So I ask you politely, please, don't tell people that suffer this everyday that you suffer the same or more, because that's just disrespecting their huge effort to try and survive one day at a time.

SOME products, like diapers and toiletpaper, are undersupplied, but thats because those products are monopolised by a few oligarchs who are in opposition to the government, and they have produced the scarcity to simulate a crisis. Western news, especially the US media, have ofcourse hated the Venezuelan government since they threw out the oilcompanies and nationalized their resourses. Thats the kind of thing you get overthrown by the US for doing. So this is why Olivier is doing this. Its sad, really, but mostly for the Americans.

Socialism is the government taking my money and giving it to someone else who they say needs it more. It's stealing. Furthermore the money they steal through taxes isn't spent wisely because governments notoriously suck at money management. Edit: And because the government is necessarily more powerful in socialist states, rights are eroded and gov officials fall into corruption. Imagine if instead of lobbyists, US Congressmen were just giving a bunch of tax money to do their job and execute their programs. If you really think that money is the root of all evil, then you should prefer capitalism to socialism. At least in the former power isn't as concentrated.
@nielsstentoft24586 жыл бұрын
Mark johnson Yes, socialism isn't really that great, but socialistic programs are one of the most essential parts of a functional society. Most countries should thrive to have democracy, free market, and socialistic programs. Countries like Denmark, Sweden, and Norway are probably some of the best examplest of great "socialistic" countries. :)

Price fixing while destroying domestic industry in favor of imports, no less. How absurd is it that a country with vast fertile lands and a year-round growing climate is starving? Or that a country with a modern infrastructure and experience with shipping, which is in close proximity to the rest of the developed world is not receiving and distributing ample aid to feed everyone? This famine is being enforced by the government, because people who are starving are incapable of effecting a revolution. It's democide, slaughter of the people by a government.

This was OK, but surprisingly soft on the Venezuelan regime. I think they didn't have enough time and focused too much in the economic aspect. Nothing about the populism inherent to the Chavista regime, how Chávez got famous when he led a failed coup against a democratic government in the 90s, how Chávez bought out or got off the air all the independent media, how these people have gotten rich by stealing from the state and partnering up with drug cartels, how they basically bribe people by giving them stuff in return for their vote, how they erased the rule of law by filling all public institutions with impartial Chavistas, how they prosecuted the opposition and even dissident Chavistas, and a long etcetera. Furthermore, a bunch of amazing stuff could've been added to the economic management aspect, for example: gas is literally cheaper than water thanks to pointless subsidies, a subway ticket in Caracas is 5 bolivares, which actually means it's free because there are no longer 5 bolivar coins or bills, they bought most of the industries and then let them to rot, they destroyed Venezuela's agriculture, etc.

John Oliver (not his real name, he is a British Jew), was just doing propaganda for the US government, probably on CIA cash bribe. US wanted to remove the Democratically elected leader (Maduro). US hates Democracy.. if they leader does not bow to them. US started the Vietnam war by destroying Democracy there. US didn't like the way Vietnamese people voted. But... Maduro is still there, while Brandon and Trump are both looking weaker than before. Democracy in Venezuela survived in spite of the USA. But USA has given up on destroying Democracy. CIA is no longer paying the British Jew any more money to do propaganda against Venezuela. So don't expect a follow up. Jewish people are clever.

Ivan King Because the venezuelan equivalent of the American baby boomers, is either too old, or too disinterested in protesting, and they're quite the important group of citizens. They're the majority of state workers and professional manpower. Two years back, groups led by student assemblies successfully managed to start a nationwide movement of protests, which were met with deadly force use by police, military, and paramilitary groups. Facing this situation, and without support by the preceding generation of citizens, teenagers and young adults began what is currently a the biggest emigration process in out history. Also, the government has now finalized its takeover of the legislative system and electoral college. TL;DR: Citizens didn't pull a coup when they could.

Sensitive Atheist Allow me to answer in English, as I'm comfortable with the language. Short answer: No. Rabbit/hare was a delicatessen type of meal, but overall, the stereotypical Venezuelan preferred to eat chicken, pork, and to some extent, goat, before eating rabbits. The recent "solution" proposed by the government to promote and stimulate agriculture based in rabbits is nothing more than a scheme to appear in the international press and make it seem like they're at least trying.

Fabio García as tifforo1 said, although the issue was mentioned, it was not addressed. And neither was Diosdado Cabello, who most everybody who've been following what has been happening in Venezuela know is the real guy running the show. Maduro's just a retarded puppet

It's a 19 minute segment, some things are going to be left out because of time constraints. But really who else is reporting on Venezuela at the moment? Most people in the U.S. wouldn't be aware of half of this if it weren't for this segment. I say quit bitching and appreciate the fact that he is trying to bring this to people's attention.

tifforo1 You mean the fascists pretending to be Chavistas that are members of or allied with Colombian paramilitaries like the Urabeños and Rastrojos.

ozone263 "Most people in the U.S. wouldn't be aware of half of this if it weren't for this segment." In what world do you seriously live in? CNN, BBC, The New York Times, Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal, all mainstream media outlets, have vigorously engaged in all out propaganda war against Venezuela. I would dare to say that Venezuela is the third most talked about topic in US mainstream media, only behind Trump and Syria.

The only problem is that you cut too much slack to Chavez. He was the one responsible for destroying the institution of democracy in the country in the first place.

Chavez was democratically elected and he did nothing of the sort. This type of bullshit is pure propaganda.

C Chavez did ruin the country. All businesses need modernization and maintenance to remain relevant. He instead used that oil budget to hire more workers, finance his political campaigns and buy voters basically. Nowadays Venezuela's oiling infrastructure is in such a dire state, it's even cheaper to buy and import US oil than refine it in their own country(4times cheaper to be exact). Chavez was a moron. He did the equivalent of filling a credit card to show off to your neighbourhood how well you're off, only now he died and his family have to deal with his idiotic spending.

C In 2009 Chavez used what is kown as "eminent domain" or expropriation, he took away more than 50% of the private property and companies from their owners, this is only legal under some serious cases, he just started expropriating everything without a reason, putting the mayority of private business, and ownerships in the hands of the state, this is illegal, and this is what caused the lack of basic products (socialism) So yes he did not follow the constitution, he began the destruction of democracy.
