I think the judgement handed down from the Lord through Samuel to Saul is a method to give Saul a chance to repent. It was at this point, Saul had a clear choice to make if he wanted to. Without this judgement, Saul could not have had a choice. I think the choice was still on the table at this point.

Yes I feel that if King Saul had humbled himself & maybe stepped down as King, then God would have protected him and allowed him to live a long life ? Saul continued to oppose David and sin against the Lord by trying to change God's already change in plans ?

Saul was God's original choice for a King . His personal level of righteousness was actually higher than David's ? One wife no concubines like David . But David was more humble n willing to work with God's direction over him. Saul was self righteous and then jealous and arrogant .
