I was in the audience at this particular recording of Saul in Leeds Town Hall in 1973. We weren't allowed to applaud until the red light went off! An unforgettable experience!

Hello Brian, I was there too in Leeds Town Hall and it remains one of my most treasured musical experiences. There were two performances : Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st May 1972. The Saturday performance was broadcast live on Radio 3.

The first great version of style and historical interpretation with modern instruments, which began to overcome the previous romantic conceptions of the Baroque. Extraordinary soloists, magnificent choir of beautiful and pasted english voices and the wonderful, as always, English Chamber Orchestra under the impeccable direction of Charles Mackerras, who had already surprised us with "Judas Maccabaeus". Without a doubt an extraordinary first attempt at sonority and Handelian spirit that would culminate in the version directed by John Eliot Gardiner and his fantastic group at the Gottingen Handel Festival. ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT.

This performance is absolutely splendid. Thank you very much for posting all three Acts, with their respective track lists, and a full cast list, so often missing from some uploads.

There are only 3 comments! People just do not know what is super music anymore. I agree with the comments. I have been playing the Overture on my guitar for a couple of weeks, starting the Allegro. Thanks a Million!

I have been listening to this for 2 or 3 months! The modern world is going to miss inspired music like this. How did Christian culture fall to what it is today. Music to slay atheistic Giants ! No 1 in Israel!

To think the audience talked, laughed, went here and there, ate, drink... etc, when Handel directed these overtures.... Well, different times, different people.

Why have you loaded certain movements from other recordings? e.g. 'the youth inspired by thee' ? It's very noticeable when baroque and modern pitch come into play.

Because I had copyright problems with that part, just for that part in the three CDs. The video got blocked. This was the solution I found, set that part from another recording. I don´t know why just that part had problems and, weirder, I tried to upload just that problematic part in a separated video and I didn´t have any copyright issue. Here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3PNmml_g5p9kMk So, I haven´t understand yet all the question.
