This Allemande is a brother movement to the one from the B minor Violin Partita BWV 1002-the only two allemandes he writes with all the embellishments realized in longhand. Was he perhaps giving us examples of how he would prefer performers to ornament his dances? Were these two allemandes meditations on his having just lost his first wife (1720)? Nobody knows.

I first watched it in 2001, in 5th grade, at age 11. (Can you believe it?) I first saw it on Ovation TV (when it was REALLY worth watching for me, with wonderful documentaries, Howard Goodall’s notwithstanding). I believe that it was the same time my recorder unit in my elementary school music class was learning “Hot Cross Buns.” (As someone who survived playing it in previous ones before moving to FL from my native NJ at the time, it was nice to revisit that for me.)

Besides seeing Michala Petri on Classic Arts Showcase on my public access channel around the same time, it was Koopman’s and the ABO’s performance of that cantata on Ovation TV that not only made me see the vastness of the recorder’s repertoire. It also REALLY got me at a YOUNG AGE into early music and period practice appreciation.

To think the audience talked, laughed, went here and there, ate, drink... etc, when Handel directed these overtures.... Well, different times, different people.

Unbearably beautiful interpretation set alongside a production which updates the trappings of an oppressive regime with point and devasting effect. Handel's dramatic and musical experience flows free into the modern age.
