I'm not a street photographer and can't remember if I'd seen Saul Leiter's work before, but I've studied the works of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Fred Herzog, Joel Meyerowitz, Ernst Haas, and Vivian Maier. Leiter's bold use of color and his ability to abstract away the mundane really resonate with and comes naturally to me. He's my new favorite street photographer!

@@RobinsBookClub Thanks for the comment and the video. My first ever Instagram photo has some of the elements discussed in this video, albeit without a conscious effort to imitate Leiter. I'm hesitant to post a link here, lest it might look like a plug.

In a world of clinically sharp soulless lenses and the never ending reach for more and more megapixels that is slowly strangling any and all emotion out of our beloved craft.. This is a Godsend to see and watch. Brilliant as always Robin... Thanks for what you do.

You're welcome! My personal take is digital for convenience (in whatever way that manifests) and non-digital by preference. Saying that it's far too long since I shot any film...! I've been dreaming about Platinum Palladium printing for a while now.... Anyway, thanks again for your feedback and encouragement.

❤ Robin, I think this is the FIRST time I truly f***ing enjoyed Saul Leiter the way he deserves to be appreciated. (Along with your video I also enjoyed a glass of good scotch 🥃 😉) Since you mentioned “1923” in the beginning I realized that my grandfather was also born the same year back in Ukraine 🇺🇦 And suddenly Leiter’s era became more relatable. Though my grandpa outlived Saul Leiter just by two years. THANK YOU FOR THIS BOOK REVIEW! I believe it’s the best retrospective of Leiter’s photography so far. All other publications are more banal and repeat each other - the yellow taxi cab, a red umbrella photo and a view through the window with raindrops. This book offers a much broader view on Saul Leiter’s photographic and artistic legacy… Now I have a difficult decision to make: 😅 to buy another bottle of scotch or this wonderful book 🤔

I suppose sometimes a band has to play it's greatest hits, but usually it's better to experience the original albums :) FWIW may I suggest the bottle AND the book :)

Well I've done videos on Forever, All About and Unseen Saul Leiter. I really should do an actual comparison video, my gut feeling is if you can get this one at a good price (£45ish atm?) then this is actually best value if you want to have that "exhibition" type experience I mention. BUT the other books are all great, although I wouldn't start with unseen, as that's more of a deep dive by its very nature. Let me know what you decide :)

Thanks for another great video. Can I ask if you could only have one between this and unseen leiter, which would it be? I love leiter's work but I am strapped for cash

Thanks for the video, Robin. How does this book compare to previous Saul Leiter books? Are there any photos in the other books that are missing from this one?
@RobinsBookClub
@RobinsBookClub 8 ай бұрын
The cheeky answer is - watch my other 5 videos ;) I'll probably do a more direct comparison video at some point. This one is bigger and more expensive, but the other 3 are packed full of photographs and paintings too, so while there is some overlap there's also plenty of difference. I suppose that's due to the enormity of his output over decades.

It looks a lovely book but what a shame it doesn't have a proper dustjacket.

I've got a bit of a love/hate thing with dust jackets. I usually take them off when reading a book and then sometimes they don't make it back on! Terrible behaviour I know....!

Yes-a torn jacket is also annoying. I think publishers like to have books without jackets as it cuts costs. I noticed a Vivian Maier book by Thames and Hudson had no jacket at all.@@RobinsBookClub
