@Edgar G. For the most part, Leiter shot a Leica 35mm with a telephoto lens, up to 90mm and even 150mm. Later in his career, he also got into micro 4/3 and other digital cameras. Not sure it was in the video, this is from one of my source sites

This was a wonderful video. Saul Leiter is one of my favorites. He falls in my view in the category of other photographers who used color in such unique ways like Jay Maisel, Pete Turner, Eric Meola. True masters in the use of color with their own style of photography.

He doesn’t fall into any category at all-except the category of Saul Leiter. There never has been, nor will there ever be, another Saul Leiter. He didn’t raise the bar-he WAS the bar.

That was really cool! Sol Leiter seems so unpretentious it's refreshing. (I got a kick out of using outdated/expired 35mm Polaroid film in a three day studio fashion workshop I took back in '96.)

Thanks for this wonderful insight into the work of a great artist. Just one small detail, Saul said in an interview in 2017 that he went to New York to escape from his father rather than to pursue his painting ambitions.

Really interesting video and I liked the documentary very much. Having spent sixty years living in and photographing the lower eastside of NYC his body of work is a unique record of a place and time. However, Leiter makes it clear there was no 'project' or 'mission' to his photography. Like a magpie he brought home what he found shiny and attractive to line his nest. It seems most photographers of the film and print era lived in an accumulation of print boxes and slide containers which look disorderly to everyone but themselves. In a way he was right to question the value of making a documentary about his work. All he can really tell us is he took photographs because he wanted to preserve what he thought was beautiful. As he points-out, he can't really explain the 'why' and the 'how' is the individual approach of each photographer, so why make a documentary?

Yeah but on the other hand it's a pity we don't know many of these wonderful photographers and their work because they kept it for themselves. I feel like "oversharing" is also a problem. I guess you have to find a balance between creating art and showing it to other people but if I had to pick one side I would say that the art is there to be seen

I had a quick talk with Saul Leiter at the exhibition at the Milwaukee Art Museum. He was a great artist and quite a character. Though his commercial work is generally quite good I suspect these images were made for his personal discovery & pleasure. He never expected that he would find a wide interest with these particular photos. He fortunately did live just long enough for the public to discover these gems.

I can't wrap my head around photographers being against color photography for so long, and people like Saul feeling uncomfortable sharing their shots as a result. It's like being racist towards photons. Plus, one could say that b/w photography is easy mode (which it definitely isn't! just being snarky) compared to having to juggle color into a shot together with all the color harmonies, subject/object focus etc.
@aboutphotography
@aboutphotography Жыл бұрын
😂 haha. I feel like price was the biggest factor at the beginning and then everyone was just too used to it. Tbh I think color is little more difficult to make it work than B&W

It is clear from several of your example videos that there is no substitute for studying painting, preferably in a natural light Studio, and in nature, preferably from a master instructor and learning the form, structure, color, value, composition for a LONG ENOUGH TIME. A few how-to KZbin’s by a lousy artist aren’t going to cut it. If you have actually become an artist, it infuses every push of the shutter-whether the particular photo is a keeper or not. You can see over and over the richness, uniqueness of these exemplar photographers you showcase (vs for example, the latest Sony sample gallery on DP Review). It’s important to be able to tell the difference.
@aboutphotography
@aboutphotography 4 жыл бұрын
I think it is definitely a (to have painting background) But I dont think it is a must. I think it is important to educate yourself if you want to be good at something. I would not disqualify youtube. It is just a source and just like bad teachers and good teachers in school, good and bad book and so on. you have good and bad youtube videos. It is up to to pick it. But hey, going to well know university (for painting for example) is probably one of the certified ways to learn it. :)
@laurencegoldman4639
@laurencegoldman4639 4 жыл бұрын
All About Street Photography Yeah, my comment was probably over the top. Going to art school doesn’t necessarily cut it either. Painting nudes in North Lit studio under the corrections of a true master is something quite different. Being able to see color progressions in the landscape and being able to reproduce them accurately. Learning form by sculpting from a model for years. Studying Cezanne’s or Tiitians, or Caravaggio’s Composition and being able to make your own that don’t suck. This kind of of thing can give you the power that Cartier Bresson possesses- for yourself. This certainly isn’t necessary, but it’s surely interesting to see the correlation between this kind of training and the work of the truly great photographers.

Enjoyed this, as I would given Leiter is my favourite photographer. But, one small, pedantic point on presentation; your green screen backlot whatever is very ugly and off putting. With the garish colours, black outline halos etc. It looks like the cgi of an early 90s Hollywood sci-if movie. Would it not be better to just sit at a desk or e?
