Watching the series for the first time was a meh experience for me. Watching it for the second time after the reveal made it much better. Good job for making us root for Sauron, literally the single most enjoyable character (and a very good actor!)

Sauron is without a single doubt the greatest villain in cinema. Even though we don't see him directly in the OG trilogy, his presence of malice and dark will resonates through the screen. When it comes to music on the other hand it fits his character perfectly. Bear McCreary's music reflects Sauron's initial motives in the Second Age and how he goes about doing it, as a planner and manipulator, the music sounds like a brewing storm growing stronger and stronger. By the time of the Third Age the music escalates into something far more intense, Howard Shore captures the doom and dread of Sauron's imminent onslaught and his will to utterly crush his enemies. Just listening to both Shore's AND McCreary's creations gives so much insight into Sauron's mind, his evolution and ultimately how he deserves the title of Dark Lord of Mordor.

Thats the best interpretation of him for me. In the Second Age he is a chessmaster that plans his ultimate ascent to ruler of all of Middle Earth in order to create a perfect utopia for the Children of Iluvatar (although, being already a corrupted spirit, his good intent is warped). In the Third Age his inner corruption has reached such a level that he drops any renmant of good intentions he might have had and is completely consumed by his paranoia, hatred and lust for utter control over the Children of Iluvatar.

Well, yes and no. For a general fantasy series set in Middle-Earth it is good. The problem honestly comes from the Lore. Outside of the show, the timeline of events is recorded to have happened very differently and with a much longer timeline than how the show is presenting it. And to be quite frank, rather than accepting and respecting the limitations of the film industry or accepting that Tolkien Estates did not give Amazon the rights to the Silmarillion, they would rather hate amazon and their creation than take that anger out on Tolkien Estates for not being willing to give the Show Runners access to the existing lore. Not that I think they have much room to speak considering Tolkien Estates is the one who approved of the show and I doubt they would have done so if they felt the show was so offensive. Like any other fandom, the lore hard fans will act like they are owed something better and will always do so. Outside of that unnecessary drama bubble, the show is getting a lot of negative reviews, but for different reasons. The main issue is with Galadial. There are a few good characters. I love the relationship between Durin the 4th and Elrond for example. I love Halbrand and how he is written. Among other characters. But the problem with Galadial is that at least until the end of this season, she is a very head strong tunnel visioned character. Which, for a lot of people, is very very hard to connect with. Personally, I see what they are trying to do with her and I think it works, but there is some poor execution with it because her internal struggle to cope with the death of her brother is not directly challenged. It is the driving mechanic of her character and it gets mostly ignored until the end where she has to surrender the dagger that once belonged to him and in turn, make peace with his death. The issue at hand right now is that Season 2 can go either way and if it does not show her growing from her Season 1 self and she continues this bloodlust, it will make surrendering the dagger basically meaningless to her character. The other problem with the series is the main plot is very subtle. Too subtle. I get the point of the plot is to find and defeat Sauron before he returns to power, but with Galadial being the only one focused on ensuring he is defeated, it makes it very hard to be a forward main plot. Now, if she were looking for clews to prove she was right and prove Sauron was still around, that would be a different story. But instead she is only looking for the fight the whole season. Everyone she interacts with, she keeps trying to drag into this fight but with no proof the fight is even necessary. The only time the show has anything happen to back her is when the leaves start to fall from the tree in Numenor. The conflict with Adar and his followers would honestly have been better if Adar was serving Sauron and his intrists. If he haden't claimed to have killed Sauron and went on a small speech about how doomed everyone would be when he returned, it would have added more validation to Galadials concerns. Instead, by doing the opposite, it just conflicts with the events in Numenor and really paints Galadial out to be a mislead, bloodthirsty, revenge driven character who is holding onto a shadow of a motivation without merit. Those are the two biggest issues I have seen with the show, and personally I still found a way to enjoy it despite it. I don't think the show is bad, I just think that some of the execution was poorly done and mistakes like this happen all the time in the industry. They aren't the first. What will really determine if it bounces back or not is the direction Season 2 takes because right now, people are right. There is more reason to back and support Sauron than there is to support Galadial right now and the kicker is that Sauron is supposed to be the villain lol. But I like a good villain. Even better if you feel drawn to support him too and he isn't made out to be evil for the sake of evil. Something I didn't like about the LOTR series (but I love those films regardless) is that Sauron is made out to be Evil for the sake of Evil. Which, at that point, he isn't supposed to be. He isn't good, far from it. Heavily misguided despite his well found intentions. But not Evil for the sake of Evil and I think that threw a lot of people off too. At least the few who didn't know about his origins and backstory. It would feel weird if you are only exposed to him in LOTR to see him now making this play at being a victim of Morgoth and not a loyal servant.

​​​@@kylesmith7448 I won't demean your tastes, but since you started the topic of ROP's quality, please understand that we all have our own benchmarks by which we judge some work of entertainment that we intake. Now, speaking for myself, I pay attention to many facets of a work - script (or the structure of the story and how it applies to characters portraying it), makeup, acting, scene design, effects, music, costumes, direction... But acting, music (which is... Why I'm here, after all), and script are top 3 in my book. And script, I found, is something that majority of people value above most other things. When screenwriters go to strike, a dip in quality of storytelling can be seen everywhere. When screenwriting falters, every other effort in a work suffers as well. The story of ROP season 1 felt... Boring. And that, to me, is the worst offense a LotR series could commit. No one was tricked by the red herring Gandalf (or whoever he turns out to be), Galadriel's character is needlessly undignified (and un-husband-ized, wth!) for a person that has at least a millennium of life behind her, and there doesn't seem to be anything of tangible stakes in the story. THAT is how anyone can dislike the season. Again, some aspects were done incredibly well (effects, music, art), but the central thing that should've been done better was screenwriting, and maybe direction.

I dunno I've got a feeling Disney is behind it. They own nearly half of the entertainment sector and have used their influence in the past to turn general audiences against potential competitors using strawmen (check the reaction to BvS before it even came out for reference). Over here the main criticism was that it was "woke" which couldn't be further from the truth as someone who is very prone to calling out such bs.

Eesh, I'm surprised this is getting as much praise as it is. Bear McCreary has composed some good music... but this is all mediocre. Instrumentation and composition are all very bland, and definitely doesn't capture what Shore had created with his music. It feels like just some generic villain music, lots of tension and deep foreboding bass. It follows the same awful tropes that I'm seeing a lot of modern composers rely on. I've listen to this suite, and then gone back to the original score by Shore. Absolute worlds apart in composition, use of harmonics, instrumentation and the general atmosphere of the music and what it evokes. Shore creates incredible tension through an oppressive theme, made moreso by his ability to interlock other motifs and show restraint in his score - so when we get the contrast with Sauron's theme the watcher/listener can really understand that Sauron is "the source of all our fear" - the thing that instils terror in the free peoples. I've tried listening to this a few times over now, and honestly nothing is improving it. It just feels so bland to listen to.
