The Savage 110 Ultralight is one of the coolest guns we've come across for its price. Its stainless, composite wrapped barrel from PROOF Research performs so well. Almost everything about this gun is amazing!
Over the next week, we're going to test out 4 different elk rifles, and at the end we're going to let YOU decide which one Jim is going to take on this elk hunt this year.

Neat. You must be a pro with a tip like that. I would never have thought that dirt turns to mud if you add water to it. ...but I'm not a pro. I wonder if you can turn water into a solid that way instead of walking across a lake you could like skate across or something. Man that would be awesome.

Still a great pump gun even though it is mostly plastic, kzbin.infoUgkxh4su9YgU1tWmjikirWcKJbjsFLEU62Bc but with care it will last a long time. It would be neat if Crosman would make a commemorative version of this with real wood stock, but of course it would weigh more and cost more, but hey, it would be cool. The included scope is more of a toy, but it does work for backyard plinking. I prefer to use pellets for greater accuracy, but BBs are just as good for plinking. This is not a Red Ryder folks; fully pumped it is 3 times the power of a Red Ryder and can be dangerous if not handled properly. Be safe out there.

Guys to those struggling with the Savage Bottom Bolt Release. You don't need 3 hands just one finger. Yes pull the trigger then depress the bottom bolt pull, but once it's pulled you can just hold it with that one finger. After that you can install or pull the bolt with ease. Thanks for the great review of this gun. I just purchased one in 6.5 PRC myself and shot it for the first time today. I'm astounded at the accuracy of this rifle. Your review helped me decide to buy it.

The proof research barrel costs $840 retail, so the rest of the gun is pretty inexpensive if the total is $1,200. That is very reasonable for that degree of accuracy and lightweight.

Msrp is $1649 on them you can get them at cabelas for $1429 and $1249 with a club card. It’s good value you’re getting a 110 which is a $550 standard barebones, upgraded to an aluminum receiver, fluted stainless bolt and skeletonized hand and receiver, the carbon barrel and the accu fit stock. Really the only thing that’s the same as an normal 110 is the trigger group but that goes for every single 110 only the 112s come with a upgraded trigger which it’s just quality matched to the sear and trigger bracket so the parts are higher quality and made and adjusted to each other, but you can easily do that any 110 just by polishing the sear, trigger face and lubing parts of the safety resetting the safety feel and changing the spring to a 6 oz instead of the 1.5 or 2.5.

When the barrel gets hot, that's when it starts to transfer heat away from itself. A heavy barrel has more mass, therefore it can absorb more energy (heat) before getting to warm, but the heat transfer still works the same way. A carbon fiber wrapped or sleeved lightweight barrel has less mass than a normal barrel and therefore the metal heats up faster and the carbon fiber has very little mass to help with absorbing the heat from the expanding gasses and bullet friction. If the sleeve only gets "warm to the touch" directly after shooting the heat energy is still trapped inside... I would rather se a wrapped/sleeved barrel get really hot, because then I know it's transferring heat away from the barrel. Otherwise it's just an insulator that's masking the issues inside. Now, if this is, say 10-15 minutes, after firing, a cooler barrel is evidently more efficient at transferring heat away, but that little detail is omitted. It's a function of thermal energy transfer that happens over time and if one is to make a statement of how that works, Time is (pun intended) of the essence. I'm still going to build myself a hunting rifle with a carbon barrel, but mostly because if the weight benefits. The few shots fired in normal hunting situations is not going to be a problem however the heat transfer works. YMMV

Except that the shot groups did not open up. I have a Kimber Mountain Ascent in 280 AI and after the third shot the groups open up and keep opening up. I have to wait 19 minutes or more for the barrel to cool before I can start shooting again. So I enjoyed your theory of the carbon wrap masking a very hot barrel, but the performance of the groups they shot just don’t bear out that theory. it stayed accurate. I’m getting one.
@77patte
@77patte 2 жыл бұрын
@@bendrixbailey1430 i think you're reading things that I never wrote... I was simply rambling about what happens when you wrap an item in an insulating material. It's not theory, it's a fact. Most barrels with carbon sleeves/wrap shoots great and the one I built since my comment above does not have an issue with groups opening or poor accuracy. What I do think one should consider though is the effects in the longer run, since the temperature in the barrel (closest to the bore) directly affects barrel life. That's it.
@bendrixbailey1430
@bendrixbailey1430 2 жыл бұрын
@@77patte Hi and thanks for replying. So, I may have failed to understand what you wrote in the first instance. I have a Kimber Mountain Ascent in 280AI, and I cant shoot more than 3 rounds accurately before a prolonged waiting period. This makes it very time consuming to sight in and confirm a new scope and changes practice from shooting, to dry firing with an occasional shot. It feels strange. I noted that the Weatherby lightweight rifle specifies cold barrel accuracy so must behave similarly. It would be nice to own a lightweight rifle that I could put 20 rounds through in an hour without watching the groups open up to over 5 inches at 200yds as does my kimber. So it looks like the Savage will do that. I’m thinking of getting it in 6.5CM. Its good to hear your rifle with the carbon wrapped barrel groups well even when warm, so maybe the carbon wrap helps keep the barrel from distorting.

Love the Channel. I live in Maine. I often find myself in a position where I am buying ammunition from a gas station (which is the only store at all for miles). As a result, I am left with Remington Corelokt or similar. Would be nice if you tested some cheap ammo on these guns. As an aside, when I taught hunter safety for inland fisheries and wildlife here, we’d tell students selecting a new rifle to go take a picture of the ammunition selection at the gas station in the rural areas where they hunt to help them decide on a caliber or remind them of what awaited them when they forgot or used up their bullets.

I bought my son a Savage for his first hunting rifle and we could not get it to shoot worth a hill of beans. We sent it back twice and we could never get to even group. We changed scopes, shooters and bullets and nothing worked so I have stayed away from Savage. However you guys have found a shooter in this gun. I love the 270 and would consider that my first choice for any big game in North America. I have used it on elk, deer, antelope and moose and it has always done the job. I heard someone ask a avoid hunter which caliber to use for elk and his response was classic. "Which ever caliber that you shoot best". I know you can be undersized and I think 243 is too small, but I have heard of elk being killed by a 243. I think bullet placement is so key to successfully harvesting an animal and I recommend that you don't shoot beyond distances that don't have the energy to ethically kill an animal which I think is also important. Then never try to outshoot yourself. Shoot the distances that you have practiced and feel comfortable and that you can make an ethical kill shot. Bottom line, I think you have found an excellent elk gun and you are shooting it very well. This would be my choice. I would like to see you guys do a review on the 7mm-08 and the 280 Improved Ackley.

All three of my rifles are Savage rifles (an ole late 90s M110 in .270 Win that I have used for whitetail for 20 years, a new M110 Long Range Hunter with the Accufit system in .300 WSM, and the A17 in .17 HMR), I like them all and I couldn't pass up on the deals that I got for the last two, saved a total of $500 on the .300 WSM and .17 HMR. I am a huge fan of the Accutrigger, light and crisp. I had to get use to it coming from a standard style trigger on my .270 Win. The Accufit is nice in that I don't have to worry about the extra weight or discomfort of adjustable knobs for the cheek rest. The foregrip is a tad off center on the left side, there is a larger gap on the right side. My rifle has a dropgate instead of a magazine, some people like my brother prefer that to a magazine mostly because he lost one in the woods. I looked into Proof Research barrels for if I ever found a smoking good deal on a donor rifle or action, but they are definitely very pricey. Usually in that $700-$900 range, which takes up the majority of the cost of this rifle along with the milled out action to save weight. Pretty sweet shooter that is for sure, and I like the heat test that you did. I am a tad surprised, but happy that you went .270 even though this is one of the options for your elk hunt. 130 grain monos like the Barnes or a 150 grain lead core bullet like the Partition, Accubond, Swift A Frame, ELD-X (145 grain), etc... should do the trick with a well placed shot as you already know. I know that your Browning X-Bolt Pro in 28 Nosler is one of your very top choices though. Good luck and have fun. Thanks for sharing.

In addition to destroying your front bag, it also creates inconsistent recoil which ruins your groups.

No comparison. I got both, tikka superlight in 7mm-08, savage ultralight in 280ai. I hate savage actions, tikka actions are way smoother, better machined, easier to work on. Although the tikka kicks like a mule, stock sucks. After carefully handloading a round for each, i can get the tikka to shoot approx. 0.75”, savage 0.35”. Good groups with the savage are around 0.15” !! About as accurate as a $5,000 benchrest gun.. savage is way better ballanced and much nicer gun overall. Both guns got a trigger job and i stripped the paint off the savage bolt and polished it. Cleaned up the action of the savage polishing all components, cycles much better. Tikka really needed no work out of the box. But accuracy and balance is in savages favor by far…. And i hate savage!!

I've owned both, I no longer own the Savage. I found the fit and finish of the Tikka to be much better than the Savage. The action was much smoother on the Tikka and it was more accurate. I could consistently get .5-.75" groups with the Tikka where the Savage was routinely around 1". Granted, The Savage was chambered in 270 Winchester and my Tikka is a .270wsm, there is much truth to the recoil on the Tikka. It's a thumper but to me, that is the only downside of the Tikka compared to the Savage. The trigger on the Savage isn't bad but I prefer the Tikka.

Have a buddy with a 7mm ultralight. Can’t get his rifle to zero. It’ll be good this afternoon and toss shots wide by 4” tomorrow. I am under the belief that he rests heavy and is getting some touching between stock and barrel. It is pretty easy to twist the stock to the point of touching. Hand him my storm and he prints clover leaves.

I have the same Caldwell shooting rest and had the same experience. The customer service is horrible since it could take you 3 days of trying to reach them by phone. It's sad when a manufacturing company has success and new leadership comes in and forgets what got them to "the head of the class". Caldwell needs to fix itself fast or they're going to lose the market. Right now, they're terrible!!!!!

I have a Savage 110 .243 Hunter that I let my son use because of low recoil. Super happy with this rifle accu trigger, accu stock ! Then I got the same rifle on this video really light ! I must of got a Lemon, it has been sent twice to Savage, the action is nasty, it feel like there is sand in the action ! I have Vortex viper Gen 2 2x10x32 illuminated FFP ! I have spent 7 months on this rifle! I had a cousin that does 3 gun matches that helped me on putting everything on. We haven’t figured out what is going on. Leupold rings! I am frustrated we lapped the rings, blue lock tight to the spec’s from Vortex and Savage! Have taken it out to the range, shot nice groups 1 week then I can’t hit a 3ft by 3ft target The next following week!

Went to the store to actually feel in hand which "light" hunting guns felt the most comfortable. The Savage 110, Browning X-bolt Speed Ovix and the Seekins PH2 Havak all felt best in hand without being to awkward or bulky. I ultimately went with the Browning as I wanted a 300 wsm to suppress so the 23in barrel on the X-bolt was a sweet spot for me. BUT the savage is quite nice and if I was getting another caliber I probably would've gone that route.

I love this channel, just discovered it a few days ago and I'm binge watching like crazy! I am noticing, that as much as I enjoy Jim's persona, I notice he's a lot like other guys that are used to handling some cream of the crop firearms. I understand it because I do the same thing with other products. When you've got the best stuff giving you the best experiences, it's really hard to down grade and "love it." But when it comes to shooting, I try to maintain a perspective of what CAN be done, not focus on the things that irritate or inconvenience me. I have both high and low end 'machinery.' Some of my greatest shooters are actually the budget offerings, slightly upgraded or modified, the best being as cheap as trigger spring/shim job on an Axis. I've done 1/2" groups without the upgrade. I'd just like to see more reviews based on what can be done, not how "spoiling" it is.

That's exactly what I was going to add. You don't have to keep the trigger depressed. Pressing the trigger releases the bolt catch. So pull trigger and the release button down, then release the trigger and remove the bolt. It is a bit funky, but once you do it several times the right way, it does start to become an after thought.

It's worth noting that ultralight rifles ted to shoot WAY better when you hold them down in the front. You can see even in your video that the recoil of the shot forces the muzzle and forend to rise. shooting from a bipod and either pre-loading it or just holding it down will produce much tighter groups and will probably really surprise you on how accurate these lightweight rifles can be.

Not bad, the rifle shoots a little inconsistent though. Definitely good for anyone who hunts because of the weight/accuracy ratio, for the bench I'd skip. Personally I'd rather build a Remage with a Criterion, PVA, or McGowen barrel paired with a trued Remington action. Then add a stock of choice with some added weights. I'd consider using a Savage action but I've heard the bolt lift is heavy.

@@josehuerta933 .308 and 30-06 can take any game in America out to 300 yards and the ammo is cheap, plentiful, they’re not going anywhere in the next 50 years so you’ll have an easy time finding comparatively inexpensive ammunition anywhere in the world. I prefer the .308 for whitetail & other medium game out to 400 yards, bear to 200 (i just don’t want to walk that far with a heavy ass bear). Even in Africa or something, you’ll find their nato equivalents without trouble. Also, their extreme popularity for decades means in a doomsday type deal, you’d be able to scavenge pretty darn easy. Not my thing, but a consideration for many. I have at least one rifle in each .223, .243, .270, .308, .30 06, 300 win mag and 20 awesome years hunting whitetail and bear on my land. I place the 6.5 cm with a .243, it’s a great gun when you’re taking a kid hunting and they’re not shooting past 100 yards anyways (since you’re teaching them ethics and how to harvest game without causing suffering. At 200 yards, even I’m not ever shooting a deer with a 6.5 cm, it just doesn’t have enough energy for an ethical kill imo. Look into the .270, .308, or 30 06 my friend, any one will serve you finely for any adventure you have in the field out to 400 yards, with the exception of dangerous game like rhino and elephant. Also, I noted your question about the savage or the tikka. I own this savage in 308 and love it to death, but I’ll tell you one thing nobody else here will. As a new hunter, you have to understand that spending 750 on a rifle and 400-700 on a leupold scope is going to leave you with a rifle better than you and good enough that your kids will shoot it one day. Nikon is also a great scope company. Don’t max your rifle budget to shoot sub moa groups and then put junk optics on it that won’t hold your zero and fogs up, you’ll just replace it and never appreciate the capability of the rifle. What you need to do, is take that damn rifle out and shoot it. A freaking lot. Any 1 MOA rifle is way more accurate than you can take advantage of, and every $700+ rifle with a great 3x9x40 scope will get you in that general range of being better than you need. You don’t need a sniper rifle to hunt deer, you just need to hit a 8 inch paper plate every single time at 200 yards tops. Sure, it’s nice to put a bullet in the dead middle of the plate every time; but if you’re shootings a 2 inch group at 100 yards, you’re shooting 4 inch groups at 200. That’s leaving you with a 4 inch margin of error, meaning if you are aiming off the middle of the vitals by 4 inches when you pull the trigger, you’re still putting that deer down within 20 yards cleanly and ethically. Long story short, 750ish for the tikka, 400ish for your scope, and you’re ahead of the game by $200 with a rifle that shoots better than you’ll even appreciate yet. That $200? That’s ammo for your first two range days. Don’t even think about going into the woods until you’re at the very least hitting a paper plate every time at the longest distance you’ll allow yourself to pull the trigger. I 100% recommend the .308, ammo is cheap and always plentiful, it isn’t overkill for anything, doesn’t kick hard, shoots flatter than a boring ass and it is more than capable of anything you’ll likely ask of it. Edit: couple of typos
@backfire
@backfire 3 жыл бұрын
Great explanation. I like a .308 as a good all around hunting rifle. You can’t go wrong with 30-06 either. I really value ammo availability and those cartridges are very commonly available. For anything smaller than elk I like .270 or 6.5 Creedmoor but if you want to hunt elk or anything bigger, I’m a fan of the 30-06.
