Nice rig, Savage made some nice stuff, I even like the blind magazine and especially the tang safety. 👍

Dandy little Savage. Your Grandpa did all the right stuff for an accurate light woods rifle. Good video.

That’s a really unique Savage rifle. I like those Savage rifles for the reason you mention. I’ve got my Dads Savage 110 in .270WSM and it’s one heck of a rifle….he slayed a lot of deer with this one. My brother and I picked it up for him many years back for Father’s Day and got him a nice Leupold 3x9 for him a little later. As far as .243, I owned a REM 700 ADL in that cartridge some years ago. It’s a fine cartridge and probably is one of the more common deer rounds when I was growing up in North Florida in the 80’s and 90’s. Thanks brother for sharing this with us! Will be looking forward to what you handload for it.

I have a savage 110e in 243. Mine has the open sight still on it. I do have a scope on it my eyes arent as good as they once was. I did change the stock on it from the slick wooden stock to one that was checkered wooden stock. I love hunting with it.

It’s really nice that you have your grandfather’s rifle, looks like he put a great amount of thought and craftsmanship into the carbine. I’ve deer hunted with a 20” 243 some, always preferred Nosler partion 95 or 100 grain bullets or the Speer 100 gr grand slam, if you hit bone or have to drive the the bullet at a less than optimal angle they still penetrate well. Tried some different Barnes solid copper bullets but my rifle didn’t like them. That 18” barrel I don’t think I would try anything slower than 4350 or you will just be making fireballs out the muzzle, powders in the burn rate of Varget might be a good place to start. Enjoy the reloading journey and thanks for sharing!

For .243 I’ve had success with 95 gr and imr 4064. The 1:10 twist , did not seem to like the 100 gr bullets well.. the 75 gr vmax in the tikka t3 hunter would make groups I could cover with a dime.

Savage rifles were looked down on but they are some of the most accurate rifles especially for the money.

I’ve owned some super accurate savage rifles- the typical savage stock did not fit me well. I was not a fan of the 90° bolt throw. The scope had to be mounted higher/different for the bolt to clear. Tikka, browning, Ruger, among others with the shorter bolt throw - I prefer. I have owned several savage rifles. I have had a 270 win and a 25/06 that were consistent one hole groups. (Model 111’s wood stock) My favorite savage rifle was a model 11 , .308 It is not in their catalog. Special run, the best wood stock savage ever put on a rifle. Supreme accuracy. I even overlooked the long bolt throw. The One savage rifle I let get away that I wish I still had.

That’s a nice piece . They made those in 458 any action that will hold that is super strong.

Was your grandfather a gunsmith or machinist? That's a beautiful looking rifle.

Burris is very good scopes . Im not impressed with the new Leupold scopes at all. I put a burris on my Tikka super light 308

A old friend always loading 115gr Partition bullets . Plenty of knock down. I'm not a fan of core locks in 243 lost two many deer. Bullet breaks up on impact and no blood trail .

The Burris full field E1 or even the droptine. Best value in optics for a few years now.

What bullet weight do you recommend? I have a 110/243 and it doesn’t seem to like the 100 gr. I bought some 80 federals to try to see if the groups tighten up.
@j_c_hunt2 ай бұрын
That’s the range I’m going to try. 80-95 grain stuff. It sounds crazy, but I found in other calibers even 5 grains lighter can make a difference. There will be a follow up to this sometime(whenever I can get around to loading, testing, and trying them).
