I know it takes a little time but I do suggest always cleaning the barrel before you send any rounds down the barrel. Have found barrels severely fouled with grease/oil/debris/metal flakes/even light rust to others that looked absolutely perfect out of the box. I just clean from the start now and be done with it.
@hedge774321 сағат бұрын
Yep. I just run a few patches soaked in ammonia through it. It's surprising how much "stuff" comes out of a new rifle! Good comment!

I cringed when I saw he didn't clean it... dirt, metal flecks, oil, et al, should be cleaned first... do a couple 3 or 4 shot groups and clean after each. Then a 5 shot, clean, then use.

A long while back, I switched to foaming bore cleaner. Several companies make their version, and most are pretty good. I will fill the barrel completely, let it sit for a couple of hours, swab it out. Repeat, but the second time, work it really well with a brush. Run patches until they are clean, and do it all one more time. You will be surprised. Each time you will get crap out. On some barrels, I have used a set of those honing bullets (a handload proposition). The last barrel I used them on shoots insanely tight groups, now! Initially, I was getting the Dr. Jeckel - Mr. Hide groupings. After the honing rounds, it settled right on in. That is a quick method to make an inexpensive barrel work to its top capability. That was a Savage Axis II I got 4 years back in 308. Prior, I had used these honing bullets on a cheap Rem 700ADL 30-06 I got in a pawn shop find for cheap. In my old shaky hands, that gun now does .5" groups with a 165 Hornady Interlock BT. I mainly bought that Rem for the action, knowing a barrel change to an after-market upgrade might be in order. Did not have to do that, so I figure I got a good shooter for cheap, not too much shooting work for load development, and have proven it with years of good hunting results. Just food for thought.

We have two Savage Axis II's in the house. They are extremely finicky with ammo. One prefers Hornady Whitetail 100gr, the other likes Federal Fusion 95gr. It took a bit of patience and trial and error to get it figured out. Each are very accurate with their preferred ammo, substitute with different booolots and anything can happen.

Like a couple of people have said, I always clean and properly lube my new guns before shooting them. You would be amazed at the amount of fouling I usually get out of them. Also, make sure to use a copper solvent in addition to a powder solvent.

I always clean a new rifle, and check that the action screws are torqued to spec. With the way that the groups changed position relative to point of aim, I would recommend checking action screw torque and make sure that the stock isn't contacting the barrel.

I have had similar experiences with the Savage Edge and Axis rifles when shooting first shots. I find they start to shoot better once you clean the barrel thoroughly. After 1 to several cleanings, they settle down if there is not tightness issues with action, base, and ring screws.

I've had a Savage 110 High Country in 7 Rem Mag for years, but broke down last week at got a cheapo Axis XP in .308 for $299.98 on sale at Bass Pro for Black Friday. I'll probably swap the barrel with an Arken Outlier barrel in a real cartridge like 7mm-08 and see what she can do. Apparently taking the Savage Axis action and swapping barrels is a common thing. Who knew? Glad to see it only took you 9 shots to get better results than that Mossberg Patriot. Here's a free Pro Tip: Clean your barrels before you start shooting. There's metal flecks, oil, dirt and debris in the barrel that you need to get out before you start shooting it.

I been running 7mm08 for 25 years and by far its done better than the 308 we have no matter what I do I can get 1 moa but the 7mm08 in all my guns shoot 1/2 and deer just drop faster with it ?

Check the torque on the action screw. Also, check the other screw. Sometimes, varying the torque will help with those problems. I'm a handloader, and there are a couple of tricks to help with accuracy. There is always a chance, though, that you may just have a stinker. Also,your gun may not like that round.

There is a break in for rifles. I like to run 100 rounds before I try to zero a gun and work on grouping. Some think the barrel will tighten slightly, some think the bullets cause the barrel to work harden, and some think the heat cycle helps the barrel settle in. In many cases, they are right in some ways. I tested this on a 1.5" diameter barrel and still had a break in period. The sporter barrels may need fewer heat cycles, than a bull barrel. Some people go beyond crazy during the break in, by running a patch and letting the gun cool after each shot. You can try this if you want, but it is a waste of time and money. Many of us took guns to a science, which is okay, but not required to enjoy the sport. The 243 Win that I have shot in the past have a crazy group until that break in period is over, some of those guns were pricey! When you dump $5K in a gun, you need to know about the break in period, or you will think you have been scammed!

Very seldom see a .243 that doesn't like the original core lokt as it's primary favorite. When I was growing up I remember my dad having a tray on his dresser with a double handful of mushroomed. 243 core lokt bullets that he had taken out of deer he had killed. He also had them in his truck and on his desk at work lol. Almost all of them were just a bulge under the far side skin. He loved that remington 700 bdl and his core lokts.

@@WHOTEEWHO So one time, back when I first bought my Browning BPS, I didn't thoroughly clean it after buying it, and after a season or 2 of hunting, I started getting jams. Then my cousin asked me if I cleaned it after I bought it, and I told him not really. He explained to me that that heavier stuff they put on it out of the factory can cause issues. I think it can hold dirt and dust more, and we typically go waterfowl hunting a lot, so we are going through mud and heavy brush. After I cleaned it, everything was great, so from that point on I started cleaning every new gun. Just thought I would share my experience and what I have heard from my cousin who is an incredibly intelligent person. I love your content, and I am glad to hear you have won some awards, you've earned it. God bless, and keep up the good work.

I’ve been a huge fan of the Axis platform, since Savage really started pushing them in 2010. I was working at a gun shop part time to get my now ex wife through nursing school, (plus, great way to sneak guns home). They rarely get much love, but I have found them to be excellent rifles. Some of the scopes in the packages are not great, but that platform has always been a performer and in my opinion: underrated. They look even better now. Nice shooting man. PS: Same, I’m too impatient to clean them first.

Without an initial thorough cleaning and cleaning between shots with a bore snake, I wouldn't make any conclusions or waste ammo. If you think every rifle coming out of the factory has a perfectly made barrel (especially cheap guns) you're wrong. 99% of the time you'll be fine but there are some barrel issues that could have been prevented with proper break in. Hopefully you didn't have any metal residue in there to start off.

@williamgaines978420 сағат бұрын
What are you hunting and where? There are plenty of good rifles in that price range, but you need to answer those questions first. Certain places will not allow hunting with certain cartridges for certain game, or ANY game. If $800 is for gun and scope you still have a lot of options.
