Savage Axis II - 350 Legend

Our first real video! One of our girls is wanting to go deer hunting this year so we decided to try out the Savage Axis 2 in 350 legend. This is a newer round developed for hunters in mid west states that only allow straight wall cartridge rifles.

I'm so happy I waited for the 350 instead of getting the 450. It's a sweet shooting low recoil gun that's devastating to deer.

Ready for the best ammo/time saving info?.. 1) Sandbag the rifle so you have very little movement. 2) Pull the bolt and look down the barrel, center the aiming point in the bore. 3) adjust your crosshairs to the same aiming point as the bore. 4) Replace the bolt, load and fire a shot, if all the previous is done correctly it should be close to the aiming point. 5) While holding the crosshairs at the original point of aim, adjust the turrets until the crosshairs are on the bullet hole on the target. Depending on the scope this can sometimes be easier with one person looking through the scope, and another adjusting the turrets. You now have a 2 shot zeroed rifle.

Don't get discouraged... it usually takes about 60 rounds through the barrel to see exactly how it will shoot. Also... all those groups were minute of deer! Great shooting... thanks for sharing this brother!

Picked mine up Jan 23rd... I bought the Savage Axis Stainless and it's pleasant to shoot the rifle with a scope is lighter than my Winchester 94 and almost as short too! I got 1 and 1/4 inches at 100 yards and 3 inches at 200 yards with the FMJ ammo. I was happy know it will tighten up with better ammo. Again... the recoil is definitely less than any 243 Winchester I ever shot!

I see you closed your eyes every shot. You'll get a tighter group is you keep your eyes open. If you really want to test ammo and the rifle, use a gun vise and take the human element out. Then once the Vice confirms everything is tight group, you shoot and compare.

I've heard people have problems with loose rings and or rails on the scope package. Lock tight and torque all screws. My wife and I have axis, 2 in 243 and 1 in 7mm-08. The more we shoot them the better they get. 2 are under 1.5 inches and 1 is 7/8 consistently. May have to find the best ammo as well.

I just purchased one of these from Walmart this past Sat...took a bit to get it dialed in but it seemed okay. One thing to note is this morning I realized the screws holding the scope on were only hand tight...so you might. Worth checking before hitting the range with any new gun.

Hiya folks, my most recent purchase was a savage axis in 350 legend, gotta weaver scope up top, no accutrigger, very compact rifle, with camo stock, very short barrel, I took it to my local gunsmith after trying to sight it in on my own, cuz I couldn't, he found all the scope bolts were loose, just finger tight, but he fixed it, bore sighted it, then I took it home and dialed it in, awesome little package now, but now the magazine won't feed more than one round, to me it doesn't matter, I figure I'm only going to get one shot, n, I gotta make it count so, I only put in one shell, everytime I shoot the rifle ,my magazine falls out, even tho it's put in correct, it's a budget rifle, gotta expect a few quirks, but other than that, it's a keeper, lol,shakyjake out.

I got the accutrigger version. My handle hits the scope when cycle a round....also, scope was off at 100 yards by 3 ft.

Always start at 25 yards. With a scoped rifle you should be 1.5 inches low (height of the scope over the bore. Move to 50 yards and adjust to be an inch high. Move to 100 yards and zero. This process takes no more than 9 shots. I have used this method for over 50 years.

If you gotta get a scope I recommend the Leopuld freedom made for the 350 legend. I got the Winchester Xpr and put that freedom scope on it you zero at 100 year screw the elevation to 3 and hit a 6” target at 300 yards.

Finally got back to the range with Hornady Whitetail 170 grain 1 and 1/2 inches at 100 yards. Winchester 150 grain 1 and 1/4 inches at 100 yards. Winchester 180 grain 1 and 1/4 inches 100 yards. Federal 180 grain 1 inch at 100 yards. All those were respectable groups from four different choices... I definitely liked the 180 grain loads! Keep shooting brother... the more you shoot the better you become! I will add my brother in law shot mine with me on a different target of course with the simular results. However... he just started shooting this past year. His point of impact was a little different the groups were no more than an 1 and 7/8 for him however Winchester 180 was 1 inch for him. So... we are all different and all rifles are different too even same make model caliber.

Thanks for sharing. I took the stock extension off for our daughter so the rifle didn't fit me like normal. I also checked and had to tighten the factory screws up.

@@joeandleann3677 yeah... gotta give it a good tune up before heading to the range. I bought mine disassembled it cleaned it and put loctite on the scope bases before my first trip to the range Good thing cause the screws were lose on the scope mounts

I wouldn't use a non-expanding FMJ to shoot deer. The way that shot, I'm not sure it's ready to go anyway.

That gun will perform better than that. I have to think its the shooter. I have the exact same gun, and I've used 2 of the same ammo. Mine will easily cut holes at 100 yards.

I got my wife one for deer season. It came with a bushnel banner and out of the box I hit paper at 200 yards. My wife who hasn’t had that much time with a rifle hit paper at 100 yards from the box.

Those opting for AR platform should note a friend of mine had problems with failure to fire. A gunsmith buddy looked at it and there are issues with bolt that may required some tuning. Just saying.

pro tip... bore sight to start at 25yd, then take shot... move out to 100 once its dead on

.350 Legend sure makes a big juicy hole in the target. Looks huge when you are used to shooting .22 and 30 caliber stuff.

I just got rid of an Axis .243 for shooting groups like that. About 2-3" groups at 100 yards is pretty trash. The Axis rifles seem to be hit or miss. Some are sub-MOA out of the box, others are junk.

50 Beowulf is a hammer for sure!! But they fly like a bowling ball! I don't hunt long range very often here in the south east, but keep it close and you will be happy.

What length barrel? I got the 22 inch figuring better velocity and accuracy. Came with the Bushnell scope package. Not sure how compatible and have yet to sight it in.

Save yourself a crapload of time, just sight any gun in at 25 yds. 1 inch low. Then go out to 100.

Did yours come with that 3-9 Bushnell scope? Mine did and I found out that Bushnell scope model is calibrated for a .17HMR.

Yeah that is what mine came with too. I don't use the hold over dash. Most of the shots we have are under 100 yards. But I've been looking for a different scope for it. I have several primary arms scopes for different calibers. I'm hoping they will make something compatible with this caliber in the future.

Bruce Whitcavitch got one from Amazon and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s exactly what I was looking for. It’s funny because I spoke with a Leupold rep a couple years ago trying to find something just like it for my .450 bushmaster. He laughed at me and said “that would make it too easy if we made something like that.” Now they make them for both. So far I haven’t shot a deer farther than 50 yards but for me it’s all about having a scope and needing that ability if the opportunity presents itself. I already have to estimate the range and having a scope I can simply dial quickly to make the shot is outstanding.

Ours came with the scope and the base. After our girl had trouble using a scope I think we'll try to put a red dot on it. I'd rather have irons but we'll probably settle for the red dot.

Soooo were those groups shot just as they appeared in the vid? As in time wise between each shot and each group, or was there a cool down period between the different groups? How hot was that barrel on the last 2 groups?

I was taught to fire 3-4 shots to the same point of aim before adjusting the sights. I've seen people "chase their sights" a few times on the range. Also, how strong is that wind you're shooting in? Seems fairly brisk in the video.

Not disputing that 3-4 is proper, but I'm too impatient and usually just do 2 in the same hold then adjust. If I put 2 in the same place, then I'm confident I didn't screw up one ya know. I've gotten decently well at sighting in a rifle in about 5 rounds to where it touches rounds - provided the rifle is capable of it

He said deer hunting, not target shooting. A sore shoulder is far less important than a clean and ethical kill. 38 special can suck it when it comes to hunting anything bigger than a rabbit.

The new style mag that came with mine is junk. Still waiting to hear back from Savage. It’s a nice little rifle but so far the poor quality mags and lack of support has me regretting not getting a Ruger instead.

I have a savage 110 in this caliber, recoil is a non issue, it has less felt recoil than a .243 win. I'm a small guy, 5 ft 4, 150lbs, and i have zero problem with recoil of this gun. 350L is nothing compared to a 12ga or 20ga slug gun.

@@jonquirk9582 yep and a 8lb can work well too. There are plenty of calibers to choose from. However this 350 legend is not really that different from a 357 mag. With the rifles and proper ammo you can achieve similar or same power. Not saying I didn't watch the whole video. Not saying I disliked the video. @@nivesknight Totally get it, this caliber was designed for a specific niche, it was designed to fit strict legal requirements for hunting in states like Michigan, Ohio and Indiana where we can't hunt with better calibers like 308 and 270 in most of the state, 350L allows people in southeast Michigan to still hunt with a 35 caliber rifle cartridge and stay legal. It's a game changer for us states that cannot hunt with bottle neck rifle cartridges.

@@jonquirk9582 if memory serves you can use a 458 socom. It is apparently not necked enough to say no to it. But yea there are still way better straight wall cartridges. The 45 cartridges as examples you can use. 45-70 I think there are 4 or so different 45 cal elephant cartridges that are straight walled and allowed. There are other cartridges out there as well it has only been a little over a hundred years since the necked cartridges came out. There are some really epic old cartridges. Personally I would spend the money on a old rifle instead. Even if I had to reload the cartridges still cooler in my opinion.
