I have to agree with some of the previous comments - There's not enough energy at those long ranges for an ethical shot on a deer, but it is cool to hit those targets.
@DrAgan_tortojed
@DrAgan_tortojed 2 жыл бұрын
But of course "there's not enough energy at those long ranges". Notice that "bushmaster" is .45 and the 350L is .35 in diameter. What does it tell us? Well, basically these two guys are handgun cartridges "on steroids": 350 is an extended version of 38/357 while the bushmaster is an extended 45 (surpassing Casull and 46, yet shorter than 45-70). Same diameters, virtually same bullets with much "hotter" packages of powder...

a 350 legend at 500 yards is still above 400lbs ke..... My state "Indiana" states you need 400lbs with an air rifle to hunt deer. Going based off that it should be fine at 500 yards.
@mfallen6894
@mfallen6894 Жыл бұрын
@@bobbybell36 Just use a proper rifle cartridge for the job for god's sake... I can hit an 18in plate with my .44mag Redhawk at 220yd, should I take that shot on a deer with my 7.5in barrelled, iron-sighted revolver? Hell no! This logic of "well, it has the energy so it must be good" (400ft lb is NOTHING when talking medium game; that's a 9mm load from a carry pistol) is greatly lacking. What about sectional density? With a 180gr projectile a 35 cal is about .205. .230 is generally considered the sweet spot for whitetail and mule deer. Once you're into concealed carry pistol velocities and energies these factors are extremely important since sectional density = penetration. If you're lucky that projectile will have about 1000fps at 500yd, probably less, especially if you're using anything other than a 26in barrel. You confident a short, stubby little 35cal can actually penetrate the 16in minimum to even reach the vitals of a deer (not ballistics gel, not water jugs) at 900-1000fps? How about the 20-24in to pass through? Do you even know if the projectile will perform at those velocities? They don't load pistol bullets that are designed to reliably expand at subsonic velocities in factory 350L (unless you're running the subs which would actually be a far better idea at these ranges given the bullet doesn't have to go through trans-sonic destabilization and you'd be running pills with much higher bc's and sectional densities) How about ballistic coefficient and whether that projectile is going to drift 5-6 FEET off of POA in a light breeze? What about flight time? It's all fun and games when target shooting, but when you're hunting there are ethics involved. If you feel like you need to take a 500yd shot use a .270win (or Weatherby or WSM) Use a .264/.300/.338win mag. 6.5PRC. 6.8 Western. 7mm mag. Hell, use a .308, .243 or even a 6.5 grendel; they aren't optimum for 500yd hunting but at least they would be ethical in the hands of a skilled shooter (and you'd actually have a fighting chance of both hitting the deer, humanely killing it, and finding the damned thing, the latter two being the only things that matter in a hunt) Better yet, use some goddamned skill and stalk within a couple hundred yards of your game if you're going to be using an intermediate rifle round. I'm sorry but this stuff really bugs me... I find so many deer every year with gut-wounds, missing lower jaws, bullet wounds to the rear legs, and you know those animals needlessly suffered for hours/days, possibly even weeks. All because people either greatly over-estimate their marksmanship, start thinking their novel, intermediate cartridge with the aerodynamic efficiency of a bowling ball is "just as good" as a flat-shooting magnum rifle round, or both. It makes all hunters look bad, so use the right tool for the job.
@bobbybell36
@bobbybell36 Жыл бұрын
@@mfallen6894 the 350 legend is a proper bullet. Did you really just say you need 16" of penetration to get the vitals lol? Also who wants pass through on a shot, that is wasted energy. I prefer to dump all the energy into the target, The whitetail I shot at 430 yards with my 350 legend, using 165gr Hornady ftx expanded perfectly. I recovered it stuck between a rib and the skin on the opposite side of the animal. It dumped all of its energy. I'm glad it didn't pass through, this is a firearm not a bow, you aren't looking for pass through. That same 165gr ftx didn't even pass through on a 12 yard shot. It performed as intended. It also shoots perfectly well at 450 yards, easily holds a 4" group. Please learn about the Caliber before you spew nonsense and I don't mean from stuff you have simply read online.

I think one thing you should add to these videos is the amount of energy of the round at distances. Just because a bullets can get there doesn’t mean it’ll be effective. We all still want a clean kill shot at 50 yards or 500 yards. Fun video regardless!

@@phild9813 The question of "how much energy is needed to ethically kill a deer" is a really complex one. It's not just down to a certain amount of foot pounds. There's issues of wound channel, deformation of the bullet, energy transfer to the target. Then there is accuracy of shot placement. Otherwise, something quick with an FMJ is ethical because it has enough ft-lbs and we know that poking small holes in things is not ethical. Lets look at energy: 350 legend 180 gr Deer Season XP at 300 yards = 622 ft-lb 22-250 40gr Vmax at 275yards = 628 ft-lb 204 Ruger 32 gr Vmax at 225 yards = 608 ft-lb 30-30 150 gr Super X is 653ft-lb at 300 yards But a 300 Blackout 220 gr subsonic doesn't even put out 600 ft-lb at the muzzle. Dunno that we can call that deer friendly. I'd say it's a lot more likely to ethically cull a deer than a 204 Ruger shooting a frangible round that will deflect off a bone and cannot penetrate solid muscle.

My opinion is that the 350 Legend is an excellent cartridge for inside of 200 yards. I hunt in Pennsylvania and most deer are shot inside 75 yards. Yeah.. you'll have a long shot every once in awhile. However.. since 1982 all the deer I shot as well as my brother's were inside 100 yards. I was on the fence about the Legend or the 243 Winchester. I went with the Legend mostly due to the 35 caliber bullet and the 180 grain load. Boy was I impressed! You get a light weight low recoiling accurate points fast carbine and the ammo is inexpensive and easy to find :) Side note:. I used mine for the 2020 deer season and bagged a big bodied pennsylvania eight point. My brother's nephew downed a huge 10 point with his. Both deer fell within thirty yards of being shot and the bullet completely passed through leaving a blood trail that a blind person could follow. Not that it was necessary :)

Good reply. I don't know how many people ask me "Is that good for 1000-yard shots?" My usual response is "Have you EVER had a 1000-yard shot?" Sure. It's fun at a long-distance range to reach out at ring the gong. But seriously, I have almost never had an actual hunting shot much beyond 200. One or two. But they were under absolutely perfect conditions with plenty of time to calculate my shot, brace myself and my weapon and decide if my target was going to come closer. In the military almost all firefights occur at less than 100 yards. Much beyond that and it was just a simple "Red-Leg, Red-Leg! Call for fire." Artillery is your friend.

Got him to 300 yards but it did not have enough velocity and BC, fell like a rock after that to go further. His scope did not have enough elevation. Told him probably was a killer deer round to 300 yards but that's about it for accuracy.

158 grain .357 mag jhp out of a 4 inch barrel revolver generates under 600 foot pounds AT THE MUZZLE but no one would say that it's not a good deer gun. Many many many handgun hunters shoot tons of deer deader than Davy Crockett with .357 mag revolvers every year. You dont need the hammer of thor to kill white tails. This 1000 foot pounds crap is just that, crap. Your grandaddy and his daddy killed deer stone dead with rifles in 44-40 loaded with black powder and .32-20 winchester with early soft points, both far under 1000 foot pounds. You dont need a magnum to do the job.

I think most people are right when they consider the 350 legend to be about a 200 yard deer rifle and that probably is right for most people capability with this caliber. There are a lot of rifles out there that can ring steel at 700 yards and beyond but that doesn't make them a effective long-range deer rifle.

In other words, just because you can shoot that 350 Legend to 700 yards doesn't mean you should even try to shoot that distance to try and kill a Deer. That is just plain gross irreponsibility as a Hunter and shows absolutely zero commone sense doing so. For a "hunting" rifle, I can see the novelty of trying to hit a target at long range for fun. However I take the ability of putting an animal down very quick and humanely, very seriously. The 350 Legend's energy drops so drastically after 200 yards that I personally wouldn't even attempt a shot on an animal past that. It's not just being able to hit the mark but rather what the bullets performance will be at that range. With the energy dump on the 350 between 200 - 300 yards, you're increasing the likelihood of a wounded animal that will suffer and likely die a miserable death. But that's just my opinion.

It’s not an opinion, it’s a fact 👍 got too many “hunters” trying to play sniper nowadays with rounds that aren’t adequate for long range hunting without them doing the proper research. High BC bullets don’t mean squat on the field, 90% of the time you’ll see an animal with 300yds where that BC just doesn’t matter. I know my .300 WBY is more than capable at taking game past 500yds but I’d try to get close as possible, the stalk is part of the hunting experience that makes it so much better.

158gr .357 is around 540 ft-lbs at the muzzle. A round that has the same energy AT DISTANCE as the .357 has AT THE MUZZLE will definitely work.

I just bought a Savage Axis in 350 legend to hunt whitetail deer next season in Ohio. It’ll be my first time hunting in Ohio. I’m going to buy the same caliber for my son to hunt with me in Ohio but I think I’ll buy him the Ruger American model.

I have a 350 Legend but I would never try to take a deer beyond 300. Probably more like 200 or less. I have a 1-6 LPVO scope so I don't trust shooting beyond what I can see. lol

Cool video, nice rifle. I like 6.5 creedmoor for long range, zero at 200 yards bullet drop very small at 600 yards +.

Shooting downhill you have to know your angle and then multiply your distance by the cosine of that angle giving you a lesser actual yardage to calculate your holdover with. That's why you are shooting higher than what the ammo manufacturer says its bullet drop should be at the given range.

I own the Ruger American in 350 legend n love it as a hunting rifle in Ohio n Pa , easy to point n swing while hunting n shoots great groups out to 200 yds with my set up, I use Hornady whitetail 170 gr bullets ! My only complaint is I hate the long magazine sticking out the bottom, I’d love a 3 shot magazine for carrying it around.

I use a 350 legend in a AR platform. With the Leupold Freedom VX scope. It is supposed to be specifically for the 350 legend. I used 145 grain ammo. And it was all over the place on a paper plate. But, I was able to get a doe at 225 yards last season. I'm going to try 180 grain this year and see if it gives me tighter groups.

Thanks for the great video! I am curious about the .350 Legend mainly because it's getting harder and harder to find factory loaded .35 Remington ammo. Since, in the majority of MY particular "JM" Marlin 336, and one other that a friend owns and utilizes for deer and hog hunting purposes cases at least, the .35 Remington is a very, very effective "thumper" from 50 yards (pretty damn close cover I must admit) out to 200 yards (over open fields) with ranges between 100 and 150 yards seeming to be the sweet spot when the 200Grn JSP bullet is in play. At least with the .350 Legend I think I could "survive" deer or hog hunts if I can't get .35 Remington ammo anymore from anywhere.

Fun stuff! I’d agree with most that mine is a 200 yard max hunting rifle. Fixed scope zero at 150 yards so I get 5.5” drop at 200. Energy and scope compensation pretty much stops there

Boo-lahts, sorry for mah tongue-in-cheek utterance, my Dad had many great marksman on his 5th then 6th Army Pistol & Rifle Team. Many of his troopers came from around the world wanting to fight for & defend "something" greater than themselves and THAT was America. I remember many of Dad's AMTU team members but the best were what Dad called his Cajun Cav Scouts, Sgts Cyr and Bastien. They met as they served alongside Dad from WWII-PTO to Vietnam. In the Central Highlands Cyr and Dad would hunt for the group. One hunt was epic, the hunters were indeed the hunted, but won that day. There is an album picture from Camp Holloway, Dec 65, of Sgt Cyr with a tiger, brought down with his personal Sharps .54 muzzleloader. 300lbs @ 175yds through elephant grass, those are the men. The point is marksmanship is similar to hunting in discipline, the fact that you are exploring the possibilities of the .350 Legend beyond "hunting" distances doesn't surprise me. That concept continues to be tested lethally by my son & his men in Mariupol, Ukraine as INTERPOL agents hunting for the Russian Federations' most talented murderers. I will let you know the outcome...

Per the 11th edition of Hornady handbook of cartridge reloading. “Slow muzzle velocities and low ballistic coefficient projectiles combine to limit 200-yard range performance to less than 1000 ft/lbs of energy. It is highly recommended to keep shots limited to 250 yards and preferably closer for best performance.” Ohio straight wall state here. While anything will go distance with enough moa adjustment, the energy a bullet has at distance doesn’t mean it will take game at long ranges. I’ve shot mine out to 200, but haven’t taken any deer with it yet. Being a reloader, the bullets are for all intensive purposes, a 9mm bullet, and Ive shot steel at 200 with a cz scorpion.

I’ve no need to shoot past 200-250 yards. It’s just fun to see what any given fire arm can do. Not necessarily what you should do on live game, but still fun none the less. Thanks for the cool videos and info.
