The Savage B17 Precision is one great shooting .17 HMR in an MDT one piece aluminum chassis. The B17 Precision's adjustable accutrigger will go all the way down to 1.5 lbs allowing you to squeeze one off with minimal force on the bang switch! I topped this one with a Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6-24X50 scope in hopes of aiming small and missing small. In the right hands this thing should leave cloverleafs on your paper and devastation on your vermin.

Yes! It really does a number on groundhogs! If you like the .17HMR, you should take a look at the .17 Hornet. Thanks for watching!

The two bullets that I have found to be very accurate are the Hornady 20 gr XTP. And the 15.5 gr NTX shoots fantastic.

Just got back from the range zeroing in my B17 FV and a new scope. Using Hornady XTP 20 grain hollow points, .125 inch groups at 100 yards. One remarkable rifle. And half the cost of my Ruger Precision Rifle, which I am going to sell. Good review, by the way.

Nice rifle. It may be hard with today's climate but if you can find them, give the CCI TNT green lead free a try. My 93R17GV really likes them. I would have never tried them but being in CA and required to hunt with lead free I found out they shoot very well.

Awesome shooting! Got myself the same gun, but had bad luck with the ammo. Winchester 17gr was the worst, with ripped cases after firing and groups about the size of the whole stupid target. Hornady 17gr did a little better, but still way to big groups. The Hornady 20gr hollow point ist best yet, but still too big groups. Coould you recommend some ammo? Or is my rifle that bad? Have sent it back already and they worked on it, but I don´t trust it yet

@@SmallCaliberArmsReview well, I guess I got some bad packages and my buddy too, but he is shooting a Ruger RPR. Seems like I have to go the trial and error way, but thank you for the reply👍🏼

My bad. I was thinking the .17 BMag instead of the B17. Two different rifles one is .17HMR the BMag is .17WSM. You threw me off when you said your buddy was shooting the Ruger RPR! I have shot a few different .17HMR rounds and have also had a lot of split cases, but like my 17WSM rounds, they are older ones too. I've had a lot of luck with the Hornady. I've heard most of the splitting happened with the older ammo stock. I would still do the trial and error way, you may find your rifle likes a certain brand over another. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for watching!@@joshhuntde

@SmallCaliberArmsReview thank you very much! Didn't think through it all the way when I first bought this rimfire rifle, so now I gotta live with it😂 for the future I am going to distance myself from buying more rimfire, even won't shoot this one that much if I won't find the ammo holding up to my expectations. Hope I didn't bother you with this little rant😅

Hi Richard! I also work with this caliber, among other rimfires such as .22lr and have shot for groups off of about every kind of surface and rest that you can think of over 50+ years. Watching this video, the first thing that caught my attention is the type of rest that you're using. I'm not trying to be some kind of expert here, giving you "expert" advice, but I have struggled with similar rests myself and shooting very accurate rifles on them, they wouldn't shoot to their inherent potential on these types of rests with any consistency, in my own experience... Have you tried other more vibration absorbing types of rests? Also, I have been using the Vortex Tactical scopes on many of my rimfire rifles for field shooting and informal target shooting from the time they came out with the first Tactical model in the 3-9x version and have had nothing but great performance from all of them. The latest addition is their 4-16x44 30mm Tactical that I put on a CZ 457 MTR. It is performing extremely well! I just thought that getting your views on these scopes would be interesting. I don't use mine for competition, just staying in good shooting shape during the off season and keeping my rifle skills up to snuff. Thanks for an informative video my friend!

I think the best rest I've ever used were some home made sand bags. No vibration and extremely steady. I love Vortex scopes but the cost can add up pretty quickly when you have multiple rifles to equip. I think this one is the only "tactical" version I have. I'm not a competition shooter and don't consider myself an expert by any means. I just like shooting and on occasion, I like to attempt some precision stuff. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching too!

@@SmallCaliberArmsReview I have a collection of "pant leg" sand bags that I pack around in my rig! :) But recently picked up a Caldwell Rock BR to try out. Had to switch out the bag on it for a good leather model that better fits the fore end of most of my rifles though... As long as we enjoy what we are doing and passing along some good will, some good information and doing what we can for the sport, that is all that matters! Keep up the good work my friend! Thank you for the timely reply.

Im playing around with .17hmr at the moment. Because something is called precision dosnt necessarily make it so. I have come to the conclusion that the limiting factor for the .17hmr is the ammo . Obviously you cant hand load and their is not enough variety around to find a really good fit for your rifle. The problem with the HMR as a cartridge's is (my theory) is because its so small its very sensitive to variations in the manufacturing process. Although I have also got good results from the CCI ammo. Seems a bit counterintuitive but the breeze effects the .17 HMR much less than the .22 or .22magnum so maybe thats not the reason for the bigger groups
@SmallCaliberArmsReview
@SmallCaliberArmsReview 4 жыл бұрын
As far as match grade ammo, you are limited to what's on the shelves. I do have a .17 hornet and it is center fire so precision loads can be made for it. The nice thing about .17HMR is that people without the time and equipment to develop the ideal hand load for their rifle, are on the same playing field as those that do.
