I'll just mention that understanding how the receiver, barrel extension, barrel, and bolt work together, I figured this would be fine, but it doesn't hurt to test.

Since the 6 Hexlock steel balls in the bolt lock into the barrel extension, the barrel, bolt and extension together, could be moved to a different receiver and maintain headspace.

Where did you find the barrel extension from?

A guy I met through the interwebs had a machinist make some. Not sure if he's still doing it. Unfortunately, Savage is too short-sighted and / or lawyer infested to make them available for purchase themselves.
