Honestly if he were a more serious shooter who isn't just knocking things around at the range (nothing wrong with that) that two liter bottle wouldn't have had any luck to begin with. Also the other part of the 'scout concept' is really having a high eye relief scope and a ching sling. as it sits in the video thats just a bolt action rifle with iron sights.

The Savage Accutrigger is superb, as is the out of the box accuracy of these rifles. People may not like the looks, but they are good value. I really think people who are quick to bad mouth them haven't had any real experience with them.

Impressive video, and thank you for taking the time to do it. It isn't often we get to see something in your hands that is just awkward for you. This is one of those times. You've said many times you aren't a rifle guy, have seen you work absolute magic with handguns at distances that aren't the norm, so we all know your skills are not in question. I intend to get one of these rifles, because my use is totally different than yours. Many have stated in the comments section this would not be good at long range, and I agree with their opinion. This is a 150-200 yard rifle, and it would be rare, in the heavy brush I hunt in, to get the chance at a shot at that distance. Where this rifle would shine is at close distances, in the .308 caliber would be very effective as a deer or hog gun for a one shot/maximum damage/drop them where they stand. Coupled with a 4x scout scope I can see it being very effective once it is dialed in, for those of us with diminished vision where optics make or break the weapon.

I myself AM into precision shooting. I hunt a lot of small game, so being able to put a round down range on a squirrel or rabbit and hit in the head so you don't damage the meat, is important. I love your channel and watch you everyday. And you have a natural point of aim that most benchrest shooters I would die for. My Long Range rig started life as a Savage model 12 in .308win. I was going to build a long range budget build. After $3800+ dollars it's not a budget build, lol. It's now a 6.5x47L. I had SSS flute the bolt, add a competition trigger set at 2#'s. Then they Timed and Trued the action, adding a SS McMillan 28" barrel. A Choate Varmint stock, Farrell 20moa mounts, 2 Harris bi-pods, along with a 6.5x20x50 LR/T Leupold w/varmint reticle... I've left out a number of things.. I know you don't like shoot long distance but I love the 1000 yrd+ shots, not real easy... and yes a .13" 100yrd group, with my hand-loads is fun... My family has hunted all my life, I'm 67 now. I took nearly 40 mule deer and 4 elk, we ate every last morsel of meat and enjoyed it all.... I have a number of handguns but long guns are my cup of tea, to each his own....

Not sure what I have but my Grandad gave me his Savage 30-06 for Christmas. The stock is black plastic and the barrel is stainless. It doesn't hold a magazine but that's fine. We've taken mule deer, coyote, and elk with it and I'm honored and pleased to have it. He gave me the Leupold scope on it too. Lucky lucky me!

Excellent video, Hickok45. Hopefully, everyone watched the entire video. At little after 19 minutes into the video, Hickok45 started ringing the distant rifle plate. ......... He made the adjustment, on where to hold the sights. Hickok45 said he had to hold at 7 o'clock on the plate. It's an excellent demonstration in shooting, by a skillful shooter. ....... Plus, that's a nice rifle for hunting; the scout rifle idea is a good idea.

I have myself a gunsite .308 ruger and I love the gun to death, probably my favorite. that being said, this rifle I have no doubt is a stout solid rifle, but that polymer stock looks like not a lot of love was put into it, my gunsite has the green laminate stock and is a real beauty. One of my brother's bought the Mod. 11 awhile back. To put it mildly, he loves it. It would be my guess that Savage puts the same workmanship into each of the rifles they manufacture. That said, my brother's rifle is a tack driver. I'm looking into buying one myself.Many years ago, I had a custom .243 Win caliber rifle made using a left hand Savage action. The bolt is the smoothest I've ever used.

A very nice upgrade to the model 10 scout rifle. A new rifle from the basic Hog Hunter rifle. The adjustable cheek piece and the recoil pad up grade along with the three sling swivels make the stock much better. The detachable magazine makes it a quality package. Further the front sight is much better than the model 10. The muzzle break I am not sure however the threading is a plus. Thanks for the review.

I own a model 11 scout. Picked it up about 3 months ago and put a Burris 2-7 scout optic on it. It's a great rifle, have had no issues. My stock does not have any of the poor finish issues the one on display here does. Picked mine up for $630 total with tax.

Ryan Laha How much do you think costs to sand off casting makes? Even if it was 100% mil-spec it wouldn't be $800. They put the stock in there as a hefty price, inflated to around 20% of the total cost, and at price it should be finished.

+Stapled Fish Can't speak to their current quality, but I have a model 110 in 25-06 from about ten years ago and it is fantastically accurate. The trigger is great too, but it has a wood stock so I don't know if their polymer stocks used to be better than this. Looking at this rifle, I think I'd rather have a Ruger Gunsite if I wanted a .308 scout rifle.

I looked at the Ruger, Savage and Mossberg scout rifles. I settled on the Mossberg in 5.56, it is a fun gun to shoot. Easy to carry, accurate, Cooper had the right idea for a do it all rifle. And the Mossberg will accept AR mags, a bolt gun with 30 rounds in the box is a riot.

I have an identical scout. I had trouble with the mag also. Didnt wanna seat all the way with a full mag. I just loaded 9 rds instead of 10 and that helped. Once the mag was broken in the problem subsided. Muzzle brake is extremly loud. Swapped mine for a standard AR flash hider

hi... just wanted to say that hickok45 is an awesome shot and just full of useful knowledge! anyway... i have a question for anybody that would know! ive had a stroke on the right side (thank god im left handed) and i was looking for the buttstock support that flips 90 degrees or anything close that would give me a little extra support but ... no luck! there is one in the movie full metal jacket where private pyle is firing in the prone position with his M14. anyway i just wanted to say thank you and i hope we can see hickok45 for many more years to come!!! smoke some pot!!!

I'm an eastern hunter, mainly white tail deer. My favorite rifles have always been lever action, 308 Browning, 3030 Winchester lever. They feel right to your hand. You cant kill a deer if your guns not in your hand. But my all time favorite is the old H and R single shot handirifle in the youth version, 243, 708, 308, doesn't matter. They are light, quick pointing, and the safest gun ever made. Too bad they're not making them anymore.

My "Scout" build is a Savage 110 "Scout" in .223 being rebarrelled in 300 HAM'R. Bill Wilson's 30 cal. development of the .223 brass is simply ballistically excellent. 30-30 Win. terminal ballistics out to about 250 yards is plenty of power with really mild recoil. For reloaders is uses much less powder than even a "skinny" 30-30 case. MOA accuracy with plenty of stopping power for deer, hogs, black bear, and 2 legged critters if that danger presented itself.

I might also add that H and R made the lightest, easiest pointing, and safest Turkey gun. I had my 12 fitted with a special screw in choke. I've got two other tight choked Turkey killers, a Winchester 20 and a mossberg 12, but the gun I reach for is the old single shot H and R 12 gauge.

I love this! I just got the Savage 11vt in 308. Savage made it just for Dicks Sporting Goods. It has the Acutrigger, a Bushnell 4-12×40 scope, a Bull barrel, and a 4+1 removable magazine, and a three position safety. All in all a very sweet setup.

Rifle looks accurate judging by bullet strikes. He is shooting a bit to the right, but his consistency is so good, he is just missing in the exact same spot repeatedly. I'd say it's the sights. Click or two to the left and he's all good. Drive on, Hickock 45!

Standing with a bolt gun doesn't really lend itself to maintaining it being shouldered while clambering. I don't do it with my surplus bolt guns.

I have an uncompensated 338 win mag from savage. Lightweight hunter with stainless barrel and fiberglass stock. I feel the stock flex every time I pull the trigger from how sharp the recoil is.

Savage actions were ahead of their time. Their mags have always sucked though (in my experience). They should have made the scout that was compatible with AR mags.

One thing he's missing... You gotta give the bottom a good whap! Also you can load more cartridges while the mag is in the rifle. Just press down and they pop in. I think the stock feels like dollar store crap. And it's loud in the bush when branches or whatever scrape across it. WTF Savage?! I'm getting a Boyds thumbhole with adjustable cheek and LOP.

I've got a .22LR Savage it was only $150 and it is just the best little gopher gun ever, very accurate and I've never had any problems with jams or the magazine. My 2 brothers each have had the same gun, however, but theirs kept having problems with the casings getting stuck in the chamber after firing. We tried tons of different ammo and the same thing kept happening so it was probably a problem with the extractor.

That 3rd sling mount is for a 3 mount sling. It allows you to wrap the sling around your support arm and have stability from a standing position to make longer range shots.

I hunt with a Savage M11 in .308 -- and it's one of the most accurate "hunting" rifles I've ever owned "out of the box" -- shoots between 3/4" MOA and 1" MOA depending my shooting/ammo. Worst I've seen it shoot was around 1.5" @ 100 with some cheap Remington cup and core bullets. More accurate than any Rem 700 I've owned, and cheaper too. Getting 3/4 moa out of the box with reloads for a gun that was only $550 is a great achievement by Savage. I don't care for their box magazine system but it works. Other than that it's been great to me. Took two Whitetails with it this year.

I owned and shot many bolt actions rifles and savage is my favorite. My 270 shot as well as a friends Dakota Arms 270 very impressive for a rifle that cost 429.

Would like to see review on the Savage 6.5. Just bought my first rifle. Almost walked out the door with a Winchester 780 but decided to look at a few more. Next gun shop I edveuallty held the Savage 6.5 . The Ranger told my husband it fits me best. Im 5' on the dot and small in stature. It definitely felt better than the others. So bought it. Sure hubby's heart was broken more than mine by not going home with the Winchester. But wants me to be comfortable so edveuallty when ready to hunt, make a clean shot. Went to range to see if I made a mistake and to sight in. Definitely right size for me. I felt very comfortable with it. I was able to hit just outside bullseye by 6th or 7th round (Im an amateur.😊 also low on ammo😒) So would love to see your reviews on it when possible. Or your knowledge and advice. Thanks!

+Justin Gruwell It makes a lot of sense. If your a good shot and take the time required one shot is all you need. You should never ever blast a 308 at a dear or hog. Pistol scopes or scout scopes work well and are up to the 6x range. 200 yards or less would be a cake walk. Scout rifles are proven to be fast pointing and very effective.

+Justin Gruwell 6x is not good for long range? Where do you live? I am guessing on the grass plains? 6x is far too much for anything you will do in a forest like where I live. You can make a 600 meter shot with this rifle with a decent optic. If you are shooting at 1000 meters, then I would agree that this is not the best rifle for the job.For a 400 meter or less hog gun, I do not want a big and heavy rifle. It is better for a faster snap shot as well. That happens often in a stalking hog hunt.

Jesse Sisolack The bolt gun was originally a war gun. The draw to bolt guns are the simplicity. Many less moving parts than many semi autos. And as a rule a bolt gun will last many more years than an auto without repairs. All they did was shorten a rifle and make it easier to point and quicker on target. As for all these long range shots... The longest shot I have ever made was 225 yards in Tennessee on a hog with a 308. The rest have been 90% under 100 yards. And I have hunted in 7 states over the last 40 years. If you are a youngster with limited trigger time an auto seems perfect. But a bolt gun is nearly fool proof and can be cleaned in the field with less or no worries of losing a critical tiny part. Compare a 7mm mouser to an AR15. The AR has special AR tools just for cleaning. Aint no such thing as a mouser tool.

The biggest mag problem I've had with mine was when I loaded all the rounds backwards, and tried to seat the mag backwards. Once I marked it with paint as to what was forward, and remember to rock it back and forth, the opposite of an AK, all was good and all 4 mags I have for mine function perfectly. It is actually a pretty reliable system, but is just so foreign to everything else I have. I also call shenanigans on Savage, that they designed a mag you can load 10 rounds into, backward.

If anyone is looking at getting a Savage rifle I can tell you my experience. I bought a Savage 10 in 308 a few years ago for $400 (Walmart mislisted it as it was$750+ normally) and I have to say I love it. It may not have the aftermarket that a Remington 700 has but that's mainly because it doesn't really need it. It has every single thing you could ever want in its factory condition except the stock. I bought a Choate Ultimate SS stock that brought this rifle to around 12lbs but doesn't bother me. It's a tac driver, reliable as hell, stupid easy to maintain, and you can change the barrel and bolt face yourself in 10 minutes with one ten dollar tool (plus no go-go) and charge the caliber if you want. Mine unfortunately has a 4+1 round internal magazine and doesn't have barrel threads. I also added a full length rail because of a weird scope I had at one point.

As someone who actually OWNS one of these, let me try and explain a few things about this model. I bought it because I wanted a bolt gun with open (peep) sights, not an easy thing to find (new) these days. I have other Savages and they all shoot better then I can, this one I am limited by the sights more then the gun (I removed the rail/ no scope). I also removed the cheek piece and muzzle brake, and that reduced total weight a bit. Price; go buy ANY new bolt gun, then add to it; Stock with alum bedding block (and yea, I sanded mine on the parting lines.. took 2 minutes), detachable magazine, open/ peep sights, drill and tap/ add forward rail, thread barrel for muzzle brake/ suppressor and add a quality trigger.. and you'll have spent at least $500 plus the original cost of rifle. All these extras add to cost.. The Hog Hunter is a few hundred $ less because it doesn't have the AccuStock or box mag, the only real differences. The Ruger Scout cost $300 more, doesn't have 3rd sling swivel, and the metal finish wasn't great IMO. I wanted a good "truck/ beater" rifle that would be quick handling and would serve as a bear/ cat or short range deer/ elk rifle. Also a backup for my primary hunting rifle (Model 700 in 308) in case the scope got knocked out or the weather was REALLY bad etc.. And this is perfect for MY needs. I'd hate to think I'll ever have only one rifle, but if forced to decide this one would be on the short list.... plus my Mossberg 500 & a 10/22 and I'm sure I could handle any hunting or defensive situation I'm likely to find myself in ;)

Is this a show model or something because some of it looks unfinished. It weld spotting that just been painted over (muzzle break) and they didn't even clean up the mold seam (top of the rear stock, bottom and top of the fore stock, right beside the bolt on both sides) You can see all of this from 6:46 to 7:30. Can't be a good sign if in less than a minute you can see all the sloppy work. I wouldn't trust this thing with my life.

+Stapled Fish the molded plastic stock isnt intended to save your life, at least as far as i know. Savages are accurate and well made, if you're looking for a nice wood stock buy one of their other models, or a weatherby. maybe it'll come with lipstick to match your purse

pierrotgodot Poor attention to detail on anything is a sign of a bad product. You wouldn't buy a new car with sloppy casting marks on the engine, or spotty, unclean welding on the frame. Sure, it'll run but what makes you so certain that it wouldn't snap a break line if there are so many problems with it already. Your argument is trying to make it sound feminine to want a quality product. So unless you can tell me there's a legitimate reason for skipping steps in production, I'll maybe believe how "well made" Savage makes their rifles. #rekt

I have the M11 Hog-Hunter in 308 recently for under $400. Same accurate rifle without removable mags, but much less $. Really nice bolt action rifle.
