One of the first lever actions to employ the "Spitzer" bullets. And they never should have stopped making them, it is an easily fired rifle and it's absolutely accurate.

I adore mine, 250-3000, a takedown that can cloverleaf- go figure! It became unprofitable according to Savage in 99, I’m grateful they let the king of lever’s go till it hit the 100 year anniversary however, that was kind. Hunt honest shoot straight

I was given a model 99F (featherweight) for my 18th birthday. It's chambered in .308. It's accurate, especially since I put a Lyman #57 aperture sight on it, carries like a dream, and functions flawlessly. The recoil is a little stiff, but I'll go hungry before I part with it. I'm 62 now, and it's going to my younger brother one day.

My all time favorite hunting rifle. Chambered in .300 Savage, probably the best deer/bear/boar rifle ever conceived. And suitable for elk, moose as well. It is easy to carry in the brush, accurate at 200+ yards and easy to mount a scope (if one would so desire to hobble such a trim rifle)

The Savage 99 I have given to my son is the one my 1st. wife's dad bought in the early 70's. It was a used gun when he bought it but it was the first deer rifle he ever owned. Before that, he had always used a shotgun. I inherited it when he passed away in 74. My present wife killed her first deer with it, as did my son. It's in great condition, both stock and bluing. It has only one drawback. It's in the .303 Savage caliber and that ammunition is not readily available. But that caliber beats a 30-30 and you get less recoil in the Savage 99.

I bought this kzbin.infoUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL for the rats in my backyard. From my patio to the rat zone is 34 feet, so that's the distance I have been practicing at. I'm not the steadiest shot, but right out of the box on my first try it was pretty good. The red bulls eye in the picture is 1.5 inches wide to give you some perspective on the MY accuracy. I think with a little more practice, this gun will get the job done.Interesting that the grouping at the top of the bullseye is with the gun resting on the back of a chair, and the lower group is without any support. Again, I think the main issue here is ME. The scope image is really good, and I think if I were steady it would really be accurate at this distance.I have not actually shot a varmint with it, so I can't say whether it's powerful enough to kill a rat, but it goes right through the half inch plywood I'm using as a backstop. I have a concrete block behind that in case you were wondering. It doesn't go through that of course. But I definitely think it's strong enough for rats, squirrels, etc.The stock is plastic, but the gun feels solid and well built. It takes some effort to crack the barrel to load it, but that's expected with a powerful air rifle. The noise is what I expected. It's not quiet.I say it's a good value for $100. Varmints or no varmints, I'm having fun killing paper.

Be careful! The loaded round indicator shows how many rounds are in the tubular magazine, not the gun itself. The loaded round indicator could show zero and a round could still be in the chamber. If you pull the trigger, it will go boom. Keep your finger off that trigger and the muzzle pointed in a safe direction!

An amazing design. I often thought that the tilting bolt design in popular military semi-autos of the late 40's and the 50's came from this design. It is the same basic receiver from the 1899 model up to the new design detachable magazine model. I have 336 Marlins, 88 Winchesters and one '94 Winchester. None are as smooth as my '99 Savage rifles.
