I purchased one in the 1980’s in 308. The model 99 was known to be as accurate as any bolt action. Mine was extremely accurate,unfortunately I sold it to a friend who was looking for a deer rifle for his son. It always amazed me that a rifle designed in the 1800’s was just as accurate and reliable as anything designed or built by modern machinery or standards. Arthur Savage was way ahead of his time. The only true test is the test of time and this rifle is still in use today and takes game all across the world every year. Pretty hard to dispute success like that.

This is a beautiful example of a 99 you have here. This has become a must-have rifle for me. I'd like to find one in 250 Savage. I've never understood why the 99 doesn't get the respect that I feel that it deserves? Everyone that I've ever talked to that owned one it was their favorite rifle. People just love this rifle they say it shoulders well your eyes line up with the sights well and it shoots really well. It's excellent hunting rifle. I'd like to find one with the original Tang sight. Thank you great video 👍

These are very good rifles. Mine is an 1899 take-down in 300 Savage. It sports a Stith no-drill scope mount which uses the rear sight dovetail as the forward anchoring mount. Scopes do break up the clean lines of these rifles but for old eyes work very well.

Just a correction, the Savage is not hammerless, I is concealed hammer, If you dissemble your rifle you will find a hammer. Looking at the exploded view, you'll find part 99-107 is the hammer.
@MilsurpGarage Жыл бұрын
Hey Bruce. Hammerless in this era didn’t really mean without a hammer. Even the Colt Pocket Hammerless pistol had an internal hammer. This “hammerless” description arose because just about every (in this particular case) lever action rifle had an external manipulatable hammer so the new smooth streamlined futuristic look was called “hammerless” for lack of a better description. Guns that actually have no hammer are usually called striker fired.

Bolt action receivers are thee design of choice for modern rifles in many shooting sports because of the success & heritage dating back to the U.S. patent infringing on Mausers… Which followed with successors like the Win Model 70 & Remington 700. It’s fascinating to think what could of come of “precision rifles”, if the Model 95 and later 99 had won trials. It’s conventional thinking that leads us to believe bolt action design is superior for accuracy; but that’s just investment in design. Stronger than a lever gun? Maybe. Great coverage of a fantastic rifle and gun designer. Thanks! -Isaac

Go onto the Savage 99 forums or groups and ask about the accuracy of these rifles . They were more accurate then other lever guns of the day , one of the advertising points was that they had accuracy to rival a bolt action rifle . Oh and how accurate is a Lee Enfield ( split stock) .And the cartridge designer for the .250-3000 & .300 Savage was a man named Charles Newton ,

But now I`m retired and ma passed away, I have plenty of free time. I try to keep my videos fairly short, so they don`t take a lot of time for each one. And I didn`t want to post them all at once, so I started scheduling them 2 or 3 week ahead of time. And before I knew it, I was a year ahead, and now almost 2 years ahead, with enough footage that I have not edited into anything yet to go part way into 2024. I generally don`t really plan videos. Just take the camera to the range with me, and if there are not many people there, I`ll set up the camera and get a little footage of whatever I took to the range that day. And since I can go to the range anytime, like weekday mornings, I often have the whole place to myself,

I don't have your problem, they all feel like mine! I have a bunch of calibers I have used to hunt with and a pile of them awaiting repair. I have been doing machining and gunwork for 40+ years. The 99 Savage separates the men from the boys in gun repair. I have seen a lot of butchered 99's done by "Gunsmiths" that just do not understand the function of this rifle. It is a very good design. I suspect that a lot of semiauto military rifles from the late 40's and early 50's "Borrowed" their lock up from this rifle.

Great video, you covered it very well. One note is that Arthur W. Savage was removed from his duties at Savage Arms at the end of 1904, he never owned the company but rather had backers who funded it while he ran it as general manager and received royalties from his designs. In 1905 he moved to San Diego where he continued to invent for other companies, and later started up the tire company. Nobody knows exactly why he was removed from his duties by the owners. David Royal's last name is pronounced like the baseball team, and he only did the Savage 99 collector guide. He does have a new book coming out next year which will deep dive into engraved Savage 99's and the engravers who made them. Your rifle is a 1942 manufactured 99EG, but the stock should be checkered. Early EG's weren't, but the change to checkered stocks was in the late 30's. You may have an earlier EG stock on it, or possibly it was a special order. Never say never with Savage. If you remove the forearm and buttplate, there should be serial numbers stamped on the forearm/buttplate/buttstock - if it's original they will match the rifle serial number. Whether original or swapped, it fits very well and I bet it shoots even better.
@MilsurpGarage3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info Rory. I bought the Royal book the day I did the video and it arrived shorty after and I pegged my rifle as an EG so I appreciate the confirmation. The serial numbers on both pieces of wood match the serial number. Appreciate the help and historical info.
@Cal97533 жыл бұрын
@@MilsurpGarage, well, I'd have lost that bet on the stock being original. Good for you, but definitely a bit of a mystery. Checkering on EG's started around serial 387,800 - obviously long before yours. Even the WW2 EG's got checkered. And I have to say, you did a absolute great job of research for not having David's book. Even dating your rifle to 1942 is exceptional, most sources would say 1946 (incorrectly). Might I ask where you found the date for it?
@MilsurpGarage3 жыл бұрын
@@Cal9753 I have so many books I pour through before I make a video and even then, STILL feel too uninformed to be “teaching” on the subject so I appreciate the kind words but don’t remember specifically where I found the serial number dates. I DO remember, however, that the serial number chart I saw was for beginning of production to about 1946, then information was not as precise but just estimates. Also, one source had a 1941 date so it pays to check several sources.

Yes, they certainly did. I’m sure Bill Ruger was a Savage fan.....can’t be a coincidence. Savage definitely had a patent but the Ruger patent was for a DETACHABLE rotary mag. This would have been a type of patent called a utility patent which would have long since expired anyway. I think it’s not widely used because its complex and expensive to manufacture and really doesn’t save that much space. It works well for the 10/22 but really has no widespread application....that’s why we don’t see it being used.
