A truly old fly pattern, the Grizzly King is reported to have been designed by Professor James Wilson (also the creator of the Professor). You can find this fly in the literature as far back as 1820. This version has grizzly hackle tips for the wing although it can be tied with barred mallard flank feathers (as in Ray Bergman's version).
Hook: Wet fly #8-14
Thread: Black
Tail: Red
Rib: Silver or gold tinsel
Body: Green floss
Throat: Grizzly hackle
Wing: Grizzly hackle tips (or mallard flank)
Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday and Friday).
