I love how demeaning and full of disgust the line “Barely even human” is. Its honestly worse than calling someone an animal. Animals can be tamed, domesticated, and made to have value. “Barely even human” sounds like they can never be anything but a drain on society and a constant liability. Kinda weird how relevant this song is today. Taking out the context of the movie (or any historical significance), this song is about two races hating each other for the same reasons and vilifying each other in the same way. And then there are the people angry that the song exists and blindly call it racist... because it talks about racism. They try to shut down any topic about racism. Because the “racism/racist” word has become a buzzword to invalidate anything they don’t want to discuss. Just stumbled upon this cover and the english version, the french version is even worse, "if they are not white, they must be evil", at the start "Their skin's a hellish red They're only good when dead" we have "we have to kill theses beast, a bullet in the head". Natives also have a different line that I like "The paleface is a demon, The only thing they feel at all is greed" in french translate to "The paleface is a demon, the only god they still worship is gold", and "Beneath that milky hide,There's emptiness inside" become "beneth their lili's skin, their vices lies". I really like how some of these Disney songs provide us a glimpse of the human condition. Each side here is talking about the evil ‘savages’ they are facing with no idea the other side is singing slightly different words to the exact same song. They are much more similar then they realize but they’re to wrapped up on their differences to notice. You can also see it in Beauty and the Beast. ‘We don’t like what we don’t understand in fact it scares us!’ This simple aspect of human nature has caused so much death and misery throughout our history. As a race man kind has trouble accepting things they can’t understand and if they can’t accept it they tend to fear it, and if they fear it, it’s generally just a matter of time before they seek to destroy it. In Hellfire you get a good look at the pride of a self righteous man. As an avid bible reader myself I could point out a model for that guys character after the song’s opening verse! The Pharisee who thanked God for making him so much better then everyone else and then going home believing himself blessed when God had passed his blessings on to the humble tax collector who prayed with sincerity and humility instead. It adds a sense of depth when you take a more careful look at the songs’ lyrics.

That's the fault of the writer, Stephen Schwartz. But he was writing a song about what racists thought of Native Americans, and he accomplished that. 💀 But it's a double edged sword. He captured the racist sentiment toward Native Americans, but the song is supposed to be balanced. Us, against them, tribalism is bad, kind of message. Both sides? This song is pretty much the alt-right in a nutshell: murdering people of other races because they see them as savage and inferior. The only part that can even be vaguely interpreted for the left is "they're not like you and me, so they must be evil"/"they're not like you and me, so they can't be trusted", particularly the latter. I can see how one would apply this to, say, billionaires and the working class, but based on context, it's most likely xenophobic more than anti-elitist.

Native American civilisation is so misunderstood. Most think they were essentially hippies but they had vibrant urban civilisations and the urban people held back barbarian invasions, kinda like Rome. They were as varied as medieval Europe which itself was more varied and advanced then we think.

Not to sound bad I’m just drawing comparisons Most empires in the american continents came from the drier regions with fewer forests and a largely similar culture/religion Which is very similar to the Roman Empire and Greek city states. They were in the warmer and regions of Europe with comparatively small amounts of woodlands. They shared a largely same religion with small differences And with both empires the further north you got the more forests and more tribal the societies got. The ancient Saxon/britons were a lot like the native Americans. Just with more metal and less spirits.
