MGTOW: There are NOT a lot of professional Savannah monitor breeders anywhere in the world, there are a small handful of keepers who have a clutch or two and in the process the parent animal dies long before it`s time. Feeding daily is acceptable providing the monitor/s are fully supported and the amount of energy offered is in direct relation to the amount used. I do agree, whole prey only, no meat mixes or cat and dog food.

My savanna monitor died when I gave him a peice of pork it could have been bacteria in the enclosure aswell. He was a loved pet and loved roaches 😆 he would run to the fridge and I'd find him in the back of it nice and warm. We were told to feed him live mice and we did I did not like this I felt the crickets were a good feast. Ty again. Considering getting another ones now that I have a son but I want to make sure we're doing the right thing this time. This video helps.

This video makes me so happy when I see him running around like that. My savannah died a few years ago but he was very old i think (22) :'( Really miss him because he was very friendly and social. I used to feed him roaches, crickets, mealworms, but also sometimes small rats and occasionally a boiled egg with shell and all. Do you think that was wrong?

Insects should make up a large part of the diet. I wouldn’t recommend this for younger monitors But, you can feed an maybe like teenage one lean meats like turkey and just ensure they can get more exercise. I make a homemade kinda sausage for my monitor that consists of turkey,shrimp,egg, and a large amount of crickets in it as well. I feed this about 2 times a week dusted lightly with some calcium and vitamins. This “sausage” isn’t the only diet I have him on..he also eats live crickets and super worms along with the occasional quail egg. I like to provide variety in the foods. In the wild Monitors eat what they can find and as long as you don’t over feed and make sure the monitor gets plenty of exercise having food other than only insects is good. (Also I love the setup you have)

Solid video sir but one thing.. How often are you using D3? Sometimes UVB exposure+D3 supplements on a daily or multiple times weekly, basis, can lead to “too much of a good thing”. To the point where they’re now over-supplemented with D3.

Perhaps you need to do more research, rodents per se have little to do with the awful suffering so many go through in captivity, mostly due to complete beginners to varanids impulse buying them and the mountain of misinformation that exists on their captive care. rodents/other vertebrates can indeed form part of their diet when kept in supportive conditions.

No offense but if you're worried about feeding costs this probably isn't the best reptile for you. I have snakes, a veiled chameleon and other reptiles and even as a juvenile I spent 5× the money to feed a sav as the rest of my reptiles combined. The majority of their growth happens in the first year but they're not done until 2.5-3

My baby Savannah Monitor I got about 2 months ago maybe and I handle him but he does puff up and sometimes hiss and tail whips but I pick him up and I’m wondering if I’m doing it wrong because I don’t want to force handle and make him scared of me and later when he’s large be very aggressive can you give me some advice?
@NORTHERNEXOTICS
@NORTHERNEXOTICS 5 жыл бұрын
There's is a couple of bits of advice. Look into target training or ball training. A ball on a stick. You touch his nose on the end and then feed him but when your going in for handling do not show the ball. He will get used to when it's feeding time and when it's handling time. If your determine to handle him loads then do what your doing but constantly stick to it. He will eventually trust you won't hurt him and eventually stop hissing and whipping. Long road but at the end it's worth it. Trust is a hard thing to build. Next we are starting a new channel dedicated to Savannah monitors. Only small at the minute but new videos coming out all the time. Head over and subscribe kzbin.info/door/51GhokbsEEedxdnRe0LrxQ

@@skrungle1549 when mine was little he did that, I think it is natural as they don't know you won't eat them, I just picked him up anyway and treated him comfortingly. One day he actually went the extra step and bit my finger. Since he was so little I let him hold it until he let go then picked him up anyway. I think that showed him that he can't hurt me and even after biting me I won't hurt him. Only one other bite when he was older and that was my fault during a feeding. If he can't reach the food then don't help him, he will get it when it moves. If you try to help the excitement might cause him to accidentally bite you. Lol there was blood but it wasn't a big deal. He immediately let go. I couldn't blame him it was all my fault. I fixed the problem later by making that part out of reach for live food giving him reach to any spot anything else could get to. I miss my beautiful boy.

You should NOT use dietary D3 because it`s been shown that although they can certainly absorb it, it has no effect on blood serum levels, and apart from that, the concentrations vary so much it`s very easy to overdo it, so either decent UVB bulbs/tubes or natural sunlight. They absolutely CAN have vertebrate prey in moderation, the most important consideration is to feed in relation to the amount of excercise they use, normally in captivity that is minimal.

Do you use a solar meter for distancing on your UVB bulbs because I thought they needed to be alot closer than that to receive enough UVB to synthesize D3 production I use T5 HO Arcadia 12% bulbs and I have to hang my lights no more than 18 inches above my tegus to achieve the proper uvb they need. I see alot of ppl mounting their lights far away like this though and I'd just like to know if indeed your monitor is getting enough uvb that far away and if you use a solar meter and if I'm wrong in my thinking?

I am interested in getting a Savannah monitor. I am trying to learn all I can so I hope this does not sound like a silly question. I understand believe in the fact that you can and should not overfeed. But how do you know what is the just right amount of food?

I really want one, there's a little one at the store I go too, but I'm kind of intimidated by the care! I have a ball, and she's pretty content, she's easy to handle, easy to feed, doesn't require a lot of setup, but man that monitor is cute as can be! I'm thinking i might take up the challenge. Maybe I should start with a beardie?

Cool video, only thing I'd say is I think it can be problematic to say "this is everything you need to know about sav care", just because there are going to be people who don't understand the commitment involved in caring for such a big lizard and are going to be more likely to impulse purchase a monitor if they think they can learn all the care information in a ten minute video. I think it would be more responsible to encourage viewers to do more research outside of this video from lots of different sources before thinking about taking on the responsibility of caring for an animal. Great information though, just something to think about :^)

Hi, it`s difficult to see in the video, do the UVB tubes have reflectors, and what distance is the tube from the basking surface/monitor? I like the enclosure, but there`s too much unusable space around the walls especially. I would also mention that a hatchling/juvenile will flourish in an "adult sized" enclosure, obviously it`s important to provide lots of cover in that case. I realise most beginners won`t want to build/buy a larger enclosure if the animal itself is very cheap. but we (the more experienced keepers) need to get across how expensive, time consuming and difficult these animals are to care for properly.

Your totally correct. It was MV bulbs and uvb with reflectors. I plan in 2020 to make alot more videos regarding the issues you've raise. I have to already made a few videos raising issues making sure these are the correct pet for people judging on everything they need to know

I mostly hate Facebook too, but there are a few decent monitor groups ("the savannah monitor group", "Biawak" group to name two). You clearly have some decent advise to offer and it would help new keepers learn how to properly care for these animals if you showed a few of your videos there, would you consider joining, it`s easy enough to leave them if they don`t suit you? Those are both closed groups and neither tolerates "loutish" behaviour...Trust me, I`ve been on reptile forums over a decade, it gets horrendous at times, but the "slaughter" continues, we owe it to the animals not to give up no matter how much we may get insulted for trying to help!.

Why do they need a thermostat?
@NORTHERNEXOTICS
@NORTHERNEXOTICS 5 жыл бұрын
To make sure it doesn't get to hot or to cold. To cool and the can go into a brumation state, struggle to digest food and there body won't absorb the correct nutrition . To hot and you can in basic terms cook the animal

At night you want it dark, so if you need heat at night during winter months use a Ceramic Heat emitter, or CHE on a dimmer. Gives off heat, with no light.I use one all my ball pythons, bearded dragons, and Monitors.

Hey I had a quick question, Our Savanah has gotta be four maybe five months old now and he flat out refuses to eat anything but crickets. We have tried roaches and worms from different places, coated in calcium and not in calcium and just won't eat it. He also is very limiting of himself an rarely eats more than three crickets a day. Any advice?

I have a 2.5 year old monitor that I bought as a hatchling at a reptile show he has been a joy to have but, I worry sometimes about him escaping his enclosure as it has a screen mesh top. In the event that he does escape what are some fail proof methods to catch him
@NORTHERNEXOTICS
@NORTHERNEXOTICS 5 жыл бұрын
Maybe instead of thinking about plan b being how to catch maybe put thought into how to make sure he doesn't escape. Screen tops are bad for holding humidity also they need high humidity so maybe a solid fixed top
@Reta968
@Reta968 5 жыл бұрын
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS Thank you for the advice I will see what I can do about a solid fixed top when we got him as a hatchling we did not think of it too much because it was going to be such a long time until we needed to deal with it. He has an excellent source of UVA/UVB light. We actually have a grow light usually used for hydroponic growing and that actually provides both types of light and we have that affixed to a timer. He also has substrait that is great for retaining moisture and we mist his enclosure and provided him with a lovely basking rock. He is indeed our scaly baby.

@@NORTHERNEXOTICS Has anyone addressed obstructed bowels yet? Because if not it is a danger if you feed a Savannah mice as they are hairy. 1. fill a sink or small tub with luke warm water. 2. put your Savannah in and let them have a good soak. 3. While they are soaking rub the underside of their belly. 4. make sure the temp in the water stays constant and does not get too cold. After about 5 minutes of this there is a lovely mess to clean up but, your Savannah will thank you.
