Actually, every vet I have talked to says that the only reason a monitor would be feisty is if they aren’t being tamed or their cages aren’t correct. It’s definitely a good thing to be tame, not to be feisty. Monitors are dangerous, so them being “feisty” is not a good sign. Them being sweet and enjoying your company does not make them “unhealthy and sick”. If their cage is very well put together and you handle them often, there is no reason your monitor should be mean...
@253chiefin1

im at the 18 minute mark and cant really see this guy eye to eye on the part about my savannah should be feisty. mine is 14 years old and has a whole room dedicated to him and he can freely leave and will sleep with me and is not unhealthy just loves us and hasnt bit me in over 10 years. i hand feed him also. no scars. to each their own. mine has a great life and it also sleeps in warm water i fill up a couple times a month. he crawls in himself as soon as he realizes its warm water. not everyone has everything figured out. youtube is a great place not to get advice on a monitor. some of your points are good and i agree with but the best monitors i met started with hand feeding then body contact. after that they start to see you as a heat source that feeds and cares for them. you are the ultimate reason they should not be feisty. 14 years of raising him i wouldnt even call myself a professional. i dont know their natural diet but i know they dont pick and choose insect or mouse day out there. they have no concept theyre on a diet so as long as we feed them what they eat in the savannah desert we should be fine. they have rodents in the savnnah and we see they don't turn away from them in captivity. otherwise great video so far. just think my monitor knows how to be agressive since i watch him kill rats yet wont bite my finger when i feed him by hand and he also happens to crawl up my bed and sleep with me and my wife. i dunno. mines great. lived a long life. dont think you have that opinion fully dialed in yet of them.

I'm glad you keep mentioning the minimum. People don't understand how much care these little guys need. I really hate when I see Savannah monitor and Nile monitor babies for sale for so cheap. More than half of these little guys end up in rescues or dead when people realize how large they get and how much care they really need.

@@tarkelsonWhat do you recommend as a hot spot for a baby sav?
@whitneybuxton6162
@whitneybuxton6162 6 жыл бұрын
A little non biased elaboration on your “wild savannah” monitor inclusion. They forage an acre+ per night because prey is that scarce. Not for enjoyment. If they had to travel 3’ they would be equally fine with that. They’re reptiles, reptiles don’t enjoy exercise, dogs do and occasionally cats do too but with reptiles they sit if all their needs are taken care of. They only explore if they’re in a new environment and they’re scoping it out (likely for a hiding spot) or they are hungry or thirsty or too hot/cold. Large cages are more necessary for thermoregulation than enrichment which even with monitors, the more intelligent of reptiles, they’re not going to live longer or happier if they have a cork background versus painted plywood or real grass versus carpet. They need enough space to turn around and thermoregulate. For an adult sav I’d say this is 7’*3.5’. I have a 3’ male sav and I built him a 10’*4’ mainly because I wanted it big enough to double as a bed and desk for me but I’d have followed my previous guidelines if I just wanted it as his cage. I’ve also studied him and wild monitors meticulously and came to these conclusions. At the end of the day it comes to owner preference and slightly animal personality because some are more naturally unsettled than others and will challenge the glass (nose rub) if the cage is too small.
@whitneybuxton6162
@whitneybuxton6162 6 жыл бұрын
To add I’m not condoning keeping animals in small cages, I never stated it anyways but with the people that are on the internet lately they’ll interpret the smallest thing to hell, so I’ll say outright I recommend the first cage size I mentioned. And the basking temps of 105-110 ON the basking spot, not air temps. Temperatures higher than this I never see my sav go on, use a temp gun to get the surface temp of your enclosure btw. 2-4’ of substrate to allow for further thermoregulation and humidity regulation is necessary too, though I have seen breeders keep savs on tile and their sleeping section is 3’ or so of substrate to satisfy that need and I suppose that choice can be yours as long as the cage-wide humidity is sufficient. My sav eats mice once a week and dubias (5-8 adults) once more a week in the winter and twice more in the warm months. Bathing is something people recommend a lot for savs that I don’t, I’ve seen people come in with scale rot with reptiles that they bathe three or four times a week, very excessive. Wild reptiles that are not aquatic avoid swimming, this is common sense. Especially savs as their environment houses crocs so they have every incentive to stay out of water naturally. Correct humidity and substrate make bathing unnecessary as it should be. Any stuck shed can be taken care of with a bath but otherwise keep them out of the water. I work at a vet clinic in case people are wondering where I get my information from, it’s from experience.

The AIR TEMPERATURE on the basking spot should be 100-110 but the rocks directly under the light reach a temperature of 130-150 which is the perfect temperature for Savannah Monitors. Do not Let he Air temperature of the basking spot get 130-150 degrees that will mean the rocks for basking st the bottom will reach over 200 degrees and that is way too hot for Savannah’s

Healthy Savannah monitors can become quite tolerant to the humans who care for them in captivity. Although you can never really "tame" a monitor lizard, if you get one while it is young enough, develop a consistent care routine, it can become quite used to your presence and learn to tolerate you. This doesn't mean picking it up and holding it all the time. If you want to do that, monitor lizards aren't for you.

I can really dig the video, however. you kind of contradict yourself. you stated that there is literally no observation of them really. then you say they've cut them open to only find insects withing their intestines. if there isn't enough study, then you can't actually say that's all they eat in the wild. just food for thought.

Obviously there is some reasearch, if I cut open even only 1 animal and it's full of insects that's more knowledge then we had before, I'd probably feed another one insects, I'm not gonna just assume they eat ground turkey and rats in the wild just because that is convenient for me and its what I want to feed them. You just sound stupid.

@@christreadwell9545 Thats still could be incomplete information. It may be slightly more informed, but if that organism wasn't in its natural environment or was cut off for whatever reason, it could have impacted the diet. I'm seriously considering getting myself one of these beautiful animals, I'm currently building a 6by3.5. From watching many care videos it seems my cage size is fine, so my last problem is lighting. I've heard they need UVB, and they don't need it. So I would like to hear your opinion on that, also. Heat, If i'm supposed to have an ambient temp of 75 or higher and a piping hot basking spot of 130+ what wattage should my bulbs be? And how many lights should I have in the enclosure total. If you could also provide where you procured these bulbs please tell me.
@paul-robinfranz9272
@paul-robinfranz9272 6 жыл бұрын
Brent Faith You can keep them without UVB, but then your going to have a really hard time giving him all the nutrients he needs. I just don't think it's worth trying so just go with the 50 extra bucks an get a good UVB bulb for him. As for what wattage to use, I can't really tell you, since there are so many factors like cage size, cage material, ventilation, room temperature etc. that need to be noted and make it different for everyone. I hope I was able to help you out 😉

Hi, I am looking to care for a Savannah Monitor in a few years when I have the space, and just had a few follow up questions: 1. Can you recommend a cbb breeder in the New England area? 2. Does the habitat need to scale with the monitor, or can you safely start off with a proper adult sized habitat? Thanks for the video! Very honest and upfront and excruciatingly necessary :)

Cheyenne Exotics awesome, thank you. That is what I was thinking as well... I've been trying to find a good breeder but have been coming up short. Alright a few more questions: 1. I've read that yearly vet visits are recommended- Do you maintain a regular vet visitation with your monitor? I get nervous since they hide their illnesses like you said.. and 2. This is kindof a stupid question but how do you have your wooden enclosure set up- Is there a room within your house dedicated to it? Is it feasible to add the husbandry and lighting to a room instead of creating a box of sorts? I know that brings in more variables like ceiling distance for the lights and dealing with the room door... also 3. Is it better to have one depth of dirt or more of a gradient throughout the habitat? And thank you for answering all my questions! It is difficult to find a caring and knowledgeable source online

Those are generally more beginner reptiles and if you are finding it easy I would say it depends. Savs can be very defensive/aggressive unless proper care is taken. From my point of view I would recommend an Argentine BWT. THey are less prone to being aggressive and are generally easier to become more docile. I would say that if you had a mid-between lizard before a sav/BWT it would be good.

Her basking spot is at 132+ and as for the air I can't tell as the thermometer reads 26 approximately next to the halogen lamp (50w) and that's not in Celsius. From estimation, I know it's unreliable) it feels cool on the other side of the tank and mild in the middle. In the time it took for me to type this I got an auto mister to manage humidity, but the temps read roughly the same as the input is opposite of the light. Could a light mist be affecting her wanting to bask or downright harmful? One last thing, if it's not too much trouble could you add me on a platform like Discord or Skype?

I have mildly good news. She seems to be basking and moving around, but only when no one is moving around. She seems to hide opposite of my view behind her basking stone. She doesn't even move to bask until I leave or sleep. Does Gucci ever do this?

I have good news now, I have the conditions right in his tank, yes, I was wrong as he decided to eject his hemipene and it had a spiked end. I now maintain good air temps and basking spot temps. There's only one question I have, so you said they burrow, well my sav stays in his burrow for extended periods of time without basking. I even put crickets in there and he still elects to stay put. If this persists what would you recommend? I have theories like he's stressed from me changing the substrate after it was overrun from a clutch of spider eggs, sleeping, or just not hungry.

Aryanus it could be any of those things, but savs naturally stay in their burrows for extended period of time. Make sure your humidity is high enough, and he will come out when he needs to

Voltage no that is much too small, the best thing to start them in is their 8 foot enclosure but if that's not possible a few months in a 4 foot would be minimum

thanks!!!! the site i found the enclosures on had really expensive enclosures even the 24x18x12 was 110 and im trying not to go over 1000 right now do you have any site recomendations
@tarkelson
@tarkelson 7 жыл бұрын
Voltage you could very easily build an 8 foot wood enclosure for about $300. once sealed and dirted the total will he about $450 $500

OK i have TONS of wood and my dad does construction so i may be able to do the cage almost free.Also(last question) where do you buy the sliding doors.
@tarkelson
@tarkelson 7 жыл бұрын
Voltage the sliding doors actually don't hold humidity and heat that well. get windows they're cheaper and easier. make sure the cage is very well supported as it will have about 2k pounds of dirt

This is the worst care video I have ever seen. Your Savannah’s enclosure is depressing. If it has a gun it would commit lizardcide.

Cheyenne Exotics well no it doesn't because you can buy exotic woodlice spring tails millipedes for cheap that will more likely not have diseases just because you keep one bosc/savannah monitor doesn't mean u know everything u are doing it ur way and if it works it works I'm not disrespecting u in anyway but I've seen animals die including a savannha monitor because of meterials found outside they can harbour nasty diseases
