Wow. I just found this! Seeing this show and the bus footage after is so surreal. A 15 year old me was at this show, right there in the front by Criss' wedge monitor about 6 feet from him studying every note he played. Criss played his ass off. His guitar tone was perfection. My ears rang for days after this. I remember waiting outside that bus afterwards to meet him. He and Johnny Lee signed my CD book of Gutter Ballet that I brought with. Then a few months later, I heard the news on WVVX that Criss had passed. I was devastated. I think just about every solo on every song I wrote since then had a little something I learned by watching Criss that night. A decade and a half later, I became bandmates with a singer from Florida who knew the guys in Savatage really well. Turns out his band was one of the bands Criss was going to see at the Livestock Festival when he was killed. My bandmate would talk about how he could hear Criss in my playing. Thank you so much to whoever posted this.

I was at this gig as well, and it was great to see Criss one last time given that he died only a few weeks later. His death hit me harder than most as I considered him to be among the true guitar virtuosos. However, unlike Randy Rhodes, Eddie Van Halen and others, he was an unsung hero who passed before really reaching the next level, playing for tens and thousands in arenas and sheds every night. Criss Oliva simply had a perfect tone, whether playing blistering solos or killer riffs.

Criss was great and such a down to earth guy but al Pitrelli is a better player although his personality is rigid and all about business when he’s playing. And al has more playing experience. Criss would’ve kept getting better as well because he died to young and a good guitar player keeps getting better with time
@johnp.johnson1541
@johnp.johnson1541 3 жыл бұрын
@@tritontransport Every guitarist is different. Each one's playing reflects his or her brain's wiring. Criss wrote the riffs that invented Savatage. Al came along to continue what Criss started. Al is scrhool-taught musician having attended the Berklee College of Music. Criss was self-taught with records from guys like Michael Schenker and Ritchie Blackmore as his teachers. Al might be a better technician having been school taught. But Criss was an original. Criss invented Savatage. Al never invented anything. Al merely imitated a role that was needed in all of the bands for which he played, e.g., Alice Cooper, Megadeth, Savatage.
@tritontransport
@tritontransport 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnp.johnson1541 Al has written and con written the majority of the guitar work for TSO
@johnp.johnson1541
@johnp.johnson1541 3 жыл бұрын
@@tritontransport Hey that's nice. But that writing is in the context of what Paul O'Neill demanded and what Jon Oliva demanded. We agree already that Pitrelli is the schooled musician. But Criss Oliva was better by thousands of times beause Criss invented Savatage, the sound, the concept. Al Pitrelli has not invented anything. He has contributed to the invention of others. It is like the difference between Mozart in his time and the Boston Symphony playing Mozart only weeks ago. Likely the musicians today in the BSO are better than Mozart was from a technical perspective. But none could write like Mozart and if we could go back into time, none could play like him because none had his mind. Cheers!
@tritontransport
@tritontransport 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnp.johnson1541 valid points. I often wonder how long Criss would’ve stuck around playing for TSO had he still been around when Paul started that. Obviously it’s orchestrated and it wasn’t Criss style. I think there would’ve been a lot of head butting going on and probably gone off the map when it comes to TSO just like his brother pretty much has

Listening to the studio recordings I rarely felt that Zach was a good singer for Savatages music just because his voice is very smooth and lacks the grit that Jon had. In this live performance though he sounds really really good. Seems like he's got some extra vocal fry going on or something. Sounds great.

Agreed I always prefered Jon what makes this messed up was Zac was only supposed to sing the edge of thorns of thorns album and do the edge of thorns then Jon was supposed to return for the next album. As frontman but that all changed after Chris died also for the edge of thorns album Jon Oliva tracked all the vocals first then they brought Zac Steven's in in what was supposed to be a publicity stunt while Jon went and did the dr butcher album with cris caffery. Which Actually sounded more like savatage than this album. Also I think as a tribute to us old school savatage fans they should re-release the edge of thorns with a, second disc with the whole album with Jon's original vocals because I am sure he sounded 10 times balsier on songs like he casts his stone.

The Streets tour was brutal on John's voice. There were stretches where they were playing every night without a day off 5 or 6 nights a week. John shot his voice out. In a recent interview John stated he and Paul O'Neil decided to bring in a different singer, someone completely different from John to try and get a hit which they achieved with 'Handful of Rain'. Chris Caffery left for a time around this period as well. It was around this time that John and Chris (Caffery) did the Doctor Butcher sessions. If you haven't heard those recordings, check them out.
