Thank you so much for this! Lost a twin last week in the same condition. Verbatim to what you said, and she was gone. I watched another video of yours just 2 days before about the D50 injection. I had planned to have it on hand to be prepared. Couldn't find any in town, and the vet wouldn't give me any. Am now going to order from Amazon - didn't even think of looking there. Lazarus could not have a better name! Thank you for showing us how to do this. It is a daunting procedure for folks like me who don't like sticking needles into animals. When you come to terms with the fact that the kid/lamb will die without your help it does spur you on to act and forget about your fear.

cool! ya i thought they needed heated up quickly, i had a goat down that was months old, put them in the truck floorboard and blasted the heat for hours. ended up working out, it gets really hot in there 😂. her temp was so low it wasn't even registering, thought they were a goner. those brutal cold spells are rough.

Thanks, Brian. Yes. Eventually it happens. I wish I had known about this a long time ago. I actually ran across an article about this method in a book about 4 years ago. We have saved over 20 lambs and kids by using it.

It works very well. We are so glad to have found the information regarding this method. Years ago we used to just try to warm a hypothermic baby up, but we still lost quite a few of them.

1 inch is (generally) from the tip of your thumb to the first knuckle, a half inch is about the length of your thumbnail (pink part). I have seen Sandi Brock do this several times.

I have a complicated situation if you could advise.... I have a month old Nigerian I found severely compromised from not getting enough milk from mother goat. I have tried to feed, but it refuses bottle adamently.. only weighs 5 lbs. I ended up giving this treatment you described above, but not in abdomen.. it was just very lethargic, but standing, and not drinking or eating. I gave it subQ, not in the abdomen.... I tried tube feeding, but my thought now, is that some aspiration must have occurred, because now there is a very very rapid heart rate and respirations. I tube fed three times, then went back to bottle feeding. He was appearing to swallow during last nights feeding and this morning, but then this happened... and now I can no longer feed him... How long can I keep him alive with solely Dextrose and Saline? I DID add some Dexamethasone and Thiamine to his last 10cc subq injection. Any thoughts as to if there is anything else I can do for this poor little fellow?

Would you still use a 1" 18g needle if it's a Nigerian Dwarf? Very curious as I have large Boer kids, but also have a herd of smaller Dwarfs. Also, how do you actually know if you've gone too far or too shallow? I would like to know because I want to make sure I'm ready if this is to ever happen. I pray never, but goats literally wake up every day wondering how to die. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Wow, what if you have a recently opened Dextrose? Is it still good for this?

This is a great question. If the sugar content of a solution is high enough, it will actually prevent growth of things like yeast and bacteria… think honey. Unfortunately, this needs to be about 60% solution. In the case of D20, or D10 (10-20%) solution, it’s not enough to prevent bacterial growth. Unfortunately, that great big bottle is a one and done use. 🫤

It is very important for people to use the correct size needle and follow the directions regarding the angle and placement of the injection. As well. Even as a healthcare provider, I too agree with your opinion. We have done this a lot of times and have yet to have any complications. I’m actually amazed. This is definitely a last resort effort and should only be done when the prognosis is death.

Hi, I don't have access to this Decstrose 50 product in my country. I am sure that there is something comparable at the vet or pharmacy but when searching for decstrose on google I got mainly decstrose powder supplements for fitnes use. Do you think it would be ok to use it and mix with boiled water in appropriate ratio in an emergency?

Procedure 1. Calculate the Amount of Dextrose Needed: • For a 50% (w/v) solution, you need 50 grams of dextrose per 100 mL of water. • For example, to make 100 mL of D50 solution, measure 50 grams of dextrose powder. 2. Dissolve the Dextrose: • Sterilize your working area and tools. • In a sterile container, dissolve the dextrose powder in sterile water for injection. Stir gently to ensure complete dissolution. • If making a larger batch, ensure the solution is evenly mixed. 3. Filter the Solution: • Use a sterile filter (0.22-micron filter) to filter the solution into a sterile container or vial. This step is crucial to remove any particulate matter and ensure sterility. 4. Sterilization (if not using a sterile filter): • If you are not using a sterile filter, you must sterilize the solution using an autoclave. This step requires proper equipment and knowledge of autoclave settings. 5. Transfer to Sterile Vials: • Use sterile syringes to transfer the filtered or sterilized solution into sterile vials. Ensure that the vials are sealed properly to maintain sterility. 6. Label the Vials: • Clearly label the vials with the concentration (D50), date of preparation, and any other relevant information.
