We heat our house from end to end with a simple wood burner manufactured by Jotul. Electric heat can get crazy expensive ... just look at the recent news in Texas. Save yourself the headache and bills !!!
This type of wood burning stove is very efficient for heating and we were lucky to get one. Here, Mootsy and I show how to service the stove and get more efficiency with use of fans. Where do the ashes go? I will show that too. We can use the ashes to our benefit and here's how. What kind of wood? How dry? Yes, all that and a few more tidbits of real life useful info to help you heat your own home and save money on your Winter bills.
How to create a Thermal Conveyor with simple fan use demonstrated. This causes air to naturally circulate in a more efficient way without forcing air through ducts or pipes. Cool air is more dense than warmer air so we show how to use this principle to your advantage. Our Woodland Mills sawmill makes "off-cuts" which we use for kindling heat. Of course, I run chainsaws as well and select cut saving what we can for firewood fuel and create defensible space around our home from forest fires.
Having the fuel wood you want for heat is also important and takes the right kind of planning and work. Splitting wood with an Axe is good physical exercise -- skip the gymn.
Mountain living isn't easy, but this is the best way for us and we are self-sufficient that way. When the power electric is down from major storms, we are able to survive comfortably this way in a remote place. Please be kind to others. Stay healthy and frosty my friends. Thank you for watching.

I’m considering getting one of those Jotul stoves. I’m burning an Enviro insert, but I don’t like that it needs electric to run the fan. I’m out in the woods and if we lose power it will only heat the basement with no fan. It gets cold here in upstate New York and going out in 2 feet of snow to fire up the generator when isn’t fun. Another use for that ash from your stove is to clean the glass. Take a wet paper towel or shop rag, dip it into the ash, and then clean your wood stove glass. It doesn’t scratch the glass, but gently abrades the filth off. Nice video. I always like seeing how other like minded folks do things. Having a nice supply of fire wood is like money in the bank. 👍

So glad to see another happy jotuler!😂 Ours came with the house we bought this time last year. We get pretty cold winters here at 5,000 feet and are expecting our first snow Thursday! The stove is located in the center of the house on the first floor at about 1800sq ft total. Ours is green as well (their paint is so scratch resistant!) Anyways I heard you mentioning burn times with your evergreen trees and I totally get it’s all about what you have around you. But we have a ton of oaks and some die and fall. When I tell you that burning oak has changed my life. I kid you not I can put one chunky log in before bed and wake up to a nice bed of coal. It heats the whole house! Not sure if you can access hardwood but it burns hotter longer and cleaner! We hand split everything and get nice pieces of kindling that we literally burn sometimes as fire hehe I love your wood stash outside! Sometimes it’s hard to make a bunch of wood look nice like that! It made me so happy to see you splitting with that double bit! It’s so true that nature will always be the best gym. We got a cheap trailer to hook on the ATV and it makes transporting 1/4 cords possible (for the wife) We just found out we’re having a baby soon and I can’t wait to teach him axemanship and wood burning. You’ve definitely got a subscriber in me brotha! Take care ✊🏽

Thank you for your intelligent comment discussion. You are e correct about oak and other harder species are a better heat yield per piece. We lived in a yurt for about 5 years before building this home so we had to adjust to the mountain to live in harmony with the climate. It is a choice of quality life. I wish you well.

We are getting roasty-toasty with our new to us Jotul F500!! So glad as it’s our only heat! I always say wood heat heats you about three or four times before you actually burn the wood😊

You’d be surprised how clean you can get the glass with just a big’ol rag and water.

If I kept wood next to my Jotul the house would burn down quickly. Combustible materials next to the stove is dangerous. Jotul warranty also states that venting through the ash drawer voids the warranty, it will cause the cast iron to crack.

Do what works for you. Our set-up works in the mountains. You must monitor and relocate the wood soon as it is dry enough. Our mountain wood need a little extra help sometimes.

If a small ember bed is too much for your stove with the ash drawer open something else is wrong
