I went the same route. With a $2500 budget, I could have gotten a new A7IV without a lens. Instead a got a near mint A7RII with 28 shutter count for $899 and had enough left over to buy a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 ART and a Sony 85mm f1.8 as well as a Sigma 20mm f2 Contemporary for the same money. I think most beginners overspend on the body then live with a mediocre kit lens. I can always upgrade the body later but having these good lenses makes it a far more useful kit for the budget. As long as you do your homework, you can get excellent quality used gear for a lot less money.

Wow, what a great score! And agreed. I always tell people who are just starting out to buy the best lens you can with the money you have. Then look for a cheap camera body.
