When I was a kid I loved to trace patterns, even maps. No lightbox in my day so my brother and I separated the kitchen table, put a small lamp on the floor, put a piece of glass between the table parts and traced patterns all day!!! I still LOVE to trace!

I too have been drifting towards pearle cottons. I like my stranded cottons. But pearl cotton feels so nice and works nicely on many fabrics.

Great minds think alike! I brought out my hoop and have been working on half finished cross stitch pieces, by doing embroidery with stranded cotton. I’m working over the existing work and creating my own. As far as staying within the lines 🤦♀️. I’m almost 70 years old and back in school I never did like single file so why would I start now 😊😂😂😂. Love the inspiration Corrine. You are definitely a great teacher and I appreciate you immensely. Thank you for all you do. 🤍✌️

Bless you Corrine for thinking outside of the box to expand creative options for us. I have always loved your work, but felt depressed about not having much to work with and very little budget to expand on supplies to be as creative as you, yet the desire and passion just keeps growing. I was taught to sew embroidery stitches at age 5 and off and on in my life time worked on things. I challenged myself to do a crazy quilt in silks and satin's, but did not have a book, mostly doing very basic stitched seams, but pushed myself . I am going to take your idea and work up some doily pieces and try to make some of the things that you have shown. You opened up my world of options when you put your phone light under the baking dish!!! Now I can dig out some of my things and go to it.

This is exactly what I did last month . Living abroad, I don't have access to doilies/tablecloths, etc.. so I decided to create my own embroideries and at least that way, it's all my own work . Seeing your lovely tatting too ,I also tried my hand at that .I always assumed it was by shuttle only but after discovering I could do it with a needle .I gave it a go. It takes time ,patience and practice but it's really enjoyable . I'm very time poor at the moment ,having a rainbow baby 1 year old son in my 40's plus I'm looking after my mother in law who has just had a heart operation,so for now all I can do is watch your lovely videos and get inspiration to create little morsels .

You have already been doing this. You often draw flowers onto your project and embroider it. It's such a good idea. We should try to keep embroidery cheap to do. Everything else is costing so much more. I remember when some meats used to be cheap, but then the tv chefs got onto them, and the cost soared. Do you remember lamb shanks, skirt steak etc. I fed my kids on that sort of food, then woo,! up the price went. I started my embroidery journey when Kaye Pyke brought out her books and showed us how to buy calico and some stranded cottons. Wash the calico and remove that stuff it has on it. It will become very soft and a light colour. Beautiful to embroider on. Her first book was full of beautiful cushions. She also had a shop in Melbourne. Look her up Corrine. Judy

So funny as I have been stitching a vintage doily this week for my Roxy field notes. Another great source are vintage transfers which you can trace. And some libraries have vintage embroidery designs in their collections as well as designs in magazine collections they offer online. I’m lucky to have sone good op shops where I can source doilies very cost effective - I joke to Alex that they’re my retirement fund when I’m hauling a few bags through the door 😆 cheers, Christine

Another great source of pictures is the children's books from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when woodcuts and line drawings were popular. These can be obtained for free because they are public domain They can then be sized and printed out for embroidery. I am in the process of embroidering these little images into a wall hanging. It's addicting searching for new ones, and the simplicity of the images makes them so easy to embroider.😊❤

Thank you Corrine for your video and great idea here for creating our own morsels. I managed to get a few iron on transfers in an Etsy store and I have been using them to retrace some elements as it's had been impossible to pick up doilies in the charity shops where I am in the UK. As you say prices on line are just ridiculous and then to cut them up becomes really hard. Never entered my head to check my crewel books and trace for anything other than crewel duh ! 🙄. That's why we watch you ,brilliant ideas. Love the dish and the phone hack. I am using dressmaker carbon on a light box which works really well. Take care.

You cannot even find the doilies around my area any more. And you can order scraps of doilies and embroidered pillowcases, that type of thing. But the past few packages I have ordered had no embroidery on them. Or maybe one tiny flower. To the point I am really hesitating to order. However I have found several sources for the old reproduction iron on transfers like my grandmother and great grandmother used to use. I have also found some pretty cool coloring books. And I am taking a crochet class. I want to make some perle cotton things to use in slow stitch. But nothing can replace that authentic antique lace and trim. So I will have to continue to be on the lookout. Plus. I am asking for a light box for Christmas. I have an old giant light box that T made, but it simply takes up too much space. So asking for one of the new flat ones. Plus I printed some really nice drawings off the internet And you can go to the dmc embroidery thread website and they have a lot of free embroidery patterns.

Fantastic idea, Corrine.💡I love how you think!! I hope these books aren't going up as well, I need to find some. I think what started these price hikes is the number of people who cant afford new clothes, etc even from regular Kmart and Walmart stores, they now go to the used shops. so the used shops increased their prices so they can pay their rent, utilities, employees, etc. . . Vicious cycle. But now i will look for these books like you have.
