As always good practical advice and an inspiring video Stuart ! I was in the same position when we moved here 24 years ago, it's a great way to fill the garden without spending a fortune and all it requires is a little effort and some patience ! Beware though, once you start it's hard not to keep going, I have so many plants now I give most away or to a charity sale. If you're ever back down in Essex pop by and I'll load you up with freebies ! Cheers, AndyC.

Clonex rooting gel, Fleximix root riot, Superthrive, Biobiz root juice & Palm Focus are the absolute best products on the market for accelerating this process. Additional lighting and an indoor reflective tent help too👍🏽🙏🏽

Is there a video anywhere (or one coming soon) about how to build that potting table? Love the videos Stuart - thank you! A lot of the diy I’ve done over the last year or so is down to you and just giving things a go!

Thank you for doing all of these great videos; they have been an enormous help on DYI jobs for me. One video I would like to see is making an epoxy resin garage floor (preps + floor). I’ve made one myself using Watco products, and it came out great. Would love to see your version and get some tips for my next garage. There are many DIY videos on the topic, but most are not necessarily proper ones.

Really good idea this growing your own as the cost per plant from a typical Garden Centre can bankrupt you but also used Pot Noodle pots make a very good start for deep rooted plants and veg as the tapered sides make it easy to pull out and plant

Love bamboo but it should always be grown in a pot/container to prevent it spreading ( as is it’s nature , most species send out runners under ground and rapidly pops up everywhere ) . Your living wall is looking beautiful. Another great video Stuart 👍

Another money saver is looking at the reduced/clearance in the garden centre/supermarket/B&M/Home Bargains type places. All they usually need is re-potting. watering and feeding. Got loads of perennials this year for 40 or 50p each.

I am very impressed that you can grow banana and other tropical plants in the UK...Not so easy to do here in New England. You will soon be giving Monty Don a run for his money!
@rogerbeeson4697
@rogerbeeson4697 2 жыл бұрын
Most banana plants aren’t hardy in the U.K. If they’re in a pot, they have to be taken inside if there’s any risk of frost. If planted in the ground, they need to be wrapped up for frost protection, unless it’s a very protected situation.. Even then, they may still get frosted in a hard winter, and turn to mush. But they will grow back from underground.

Bamboo is one helluva weed, once it takes hold it’s very difficult to stop. I moved to a new house that had bamboo which I eventually managed to dig out. Unbeknown to me it had spread under the fence into our neighbors garden. Now it keeps sending runners back in to ours. Grrr
@GiggleBytes2011

This depends on the bamboo. Most garden centres tend to sell the non-invasive variety Fargesia Rufa.
@ProperDIY
@ProperDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it can be if it's not a clumping variety. Keep in pots like I do or use thick plastic sheet 500mm deep to stop it spreading
@MalcolmCrabbe

@@ProperDIY I wish our garden centre told us that when we bought ours some years ago. Planted the small clump (about half the size of the one in the video) in the ground and now it's taken over half the lawn and is as tall as the guttering on the house - going to need a JCB to dig that out !!
@rogerbeeson4697
@rogerbeeson4697 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree. It’s best to assume that all bamboos are invasive, and keep them in pots. Garden centres can’t always be trusted to know what is and isn’t spreading. Once in the ground, spreading bamboo is a beast!

Or ask a Garden Centre if they have any? We give them away to anyone who asks, we always have loads lying around after making up potted plants for customers. We know some people can't afford to be buying new ones all the time, so we provide old pots and crocks (broken pots) to anyone who asks free of charge.

People find they have too many and give them away or sell them on Facebook marketplace, nextdoor, gumtree, freecycle etc. or just put them outside with a note.

Great video as usual Stuart, but please remember that certain plants are protected by the growers and are patented, so any splitting and propagating might be illegal for that variety. Check the original label before splitting them. Roses are a classic example of this, especially David Austin or Philip Harkness ones.

@@billybulmer7386 This is the problem with the world today, people don't care about other people's property. They won't know, but you shouldn't do it because you are not legally entitled to do it on certain plants.
