It's Oct 2021 right now, and I just watched this fascinating video on saving seeds since that's what I'm doing right now. My table is covered with all types of flower heads waiting for the harvest. Today I learned about the native basket flower you introduced us to, and alas.... now that I know about it's beauty and heritage--- I need to get some seeds for these lovely flowers. Do you sell them at Moss Mt Farm? Your videos are so helpful P Allen Smith. Thank you.

I've collected seeds all my life. I can still remember walking behind my grandpop on his big fruit and vegetable farm in Connecticut. I would take the seeds from his big hand and listen to him tell me what kind of seed I was planting and everything that it would become in a few months... I love the feel of the dirt in my hands and the sun on my face as I work in my gardens.😍🌺. It helps keep me sane... Thank you for sharing your seed saving skills with everyone... It helps save our future generations as they learn about growing things to help feed both their bellies and their souls...😘💚👍💋

I bought echinacea plants this year for my new edible/medicinal/herb garden. I took a few heads that had gone by and tried to shake seeds out but they weren't dry yet. So I had them drying and when I saw how you just tugged the seeds out (I was waiting for them to fall out), I paused your video and went to pulling the seeds out - SO MANY seeds and I learned so much about them. I have them in a cute little glass jar waiting to plant (north florida) and thank you for this great video. I need to learn a lot more about saving seeds!

Thanks Allen. Nature IS generous. :) I've saved Cypress vine seed (hummingbird fave) and herb seeds for years (basil, fennel, dill) . I love walking the fields in late summer to collect botanical seeds. My Datura and Moonflower seeds this year didn't come back, though.

I'm new to cornflowers so I really didn't know. Thank you! I've collected for years french marigolds, zinnias, sunflowers, foxglove, black eye Susan's and morning glories. Gardens have many different generation of life. P. Allen Smith you have helped me so much over the years learning to grow, dry and collect my garden. Really great information thank you again!

I usually remember to label my jars, but I am SO bad to forget to mark my seeds when I plant them into a seed tray! I wish I could break myself from the habit. Maybe help someone...I go buy plastic sheets meant for holding cards or photos, and i put my seed packs in those which go in a binder. Keeps them neat

Tara Bonee you are not alone. I am trying to do better at labeling just need to develop a system so that I get everything done at once and don’t have to go back

@@auyannaplants Thats exactly my issue, I forget to bring a label or get called away and assume I can go back later or will remember what I just planted..lol. Thanks for this info! My Mom always saved seeds. However, her seed collection was lost after Mom's passing. I would really love if someone would tell me the names of the flowers at the end of this video . Mom had the two red ones and we never knew the names of them. One you called "rat tail" and the other something "Polish Spirit.." I didn 't get their names to buy the seeds. I assume these are on one of your sponsors collections. Thanks Allen again. I love everything in nature and seed saving/planting keeps it growing. Blessings!

Thank you so much for doing this video! I have dedicated myself to saving seeds this year to start next year’s garden. Both veggie and flower seeds for me! This was very helpful, as I’ve wondered about where to store the seed. I have some in lidded jars and others in ziplock bags. I do have a question, though: Can you store any type of seed in the freezer? We are in south Louisiana and do not have a cellar or basement. If not, which types are ok for the freezer, and which ones would be fine on a shelf in an air conditioned closet? Thank you again, Allen! I have enjoyed all of your programs and your vlogs for many years! 💚🌸🌿
@PAllenSmith5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! All seed should be safe in the freezer. Just try to avoid fluctuation in temps. So sometimes, I'll put mine towards the back, if it's a freezer I open frequently. Also make sure your container is sealed tight. Moisture/humidity in LA will be your enemy. Happy gardening and good luck!

Hi This may be a silly question but I am in Central North Carolina where it is very warm. I don't have a cellar. Should I jar the seeds then put them in the refrigerator or just put them in my garden shed. It will be cool in there eventually just not right now. Thanks as always for your informative videos.
@PAllenSmith5 жыл бұрын
It would probably be ok in the shed just for one season. Long term (years) it may not work. If you go with the fridge, place them in marked zipper seal plastic bags and roll them up to give you more room. And I'd also place it in the back of the refrigerator. Good luck!
@alissaduensing10515 жыл бұрын
Does it matter which seeds you put in the fridge? My winter is 4-5 months long do I take the seeds out of fridge then plant or do I have to wait for them to warm up? Thank you

Hi Allen, I'm curious if you've ever saved seed from lantana? Some years I can't find the color of lantana plants that I want in my planters and would like to save seeds. I understand that all parts of the lantana are poisonous and that saved seed won't necessarily be the same as the parent plant. Are there any varieties that will look the same or do I need to take cuttings from the plants I want to save? I save seeds from lots of different flowers and edibles and most of them I just store in jars in my unheated garage until it's time to plant. Thanks for your helpful tips, I love watching your videos.
@PAllenSmith5 жыл бұрын
Margie Schaecher you’d probably do better with cuttings inside to insure the color.
