Great awareness video. The more voices and louder voices on this issue the better. The HOA’s around Swift Creek decided to stock grass carp back in 2022 because the folks that live on the lake front couldn’t launch their pontoon boats. Two years later there are absolutely NO weeds in that lake. E The water has less than 1 foot of visibility. The water treatment plant is struggling to treat the water and they actually installed a fourth water monitor to help manage the treatment. Anytime humans attempt to intervene in the natural processes in a body of water it usually ends up being a disaster. Back in the early days (1980’s) of my water treatment career we did a ton of research on the water quality and options for aquatic plant growth control on our lakes. We decided on mechanical harvesting because 1 - these lakes were water supply lakes and there were EPA regulations that didn’t allow us to use most of the chemicals used for this issue. 2 - we didn’t want to stock an invasive species that we couldn’t control once stocked in the lake. Long story short, we made the right decision because the lakes went through and are still going through their natural process and the lakes are still thriving and have some the best fishing in the state.

Good awareness video. In a few lakes in Ohio , they wanted to clean up the water. So 5-6 years ago they placed Zebra muscles in the lake that was only 4ft-8ft deep. It got too clear now the grass so thick the boats get out of the docks. The grass was too thick for the fish to live in. They been mechanical harvesting some grass but not spraying. But you do need some grass.

That’s a frustrating situation. Too many people automatically go for bending the environment to fit their wants instead of integrating themselves into the environment. The results are too often disastrous.

I hear ya Bucky! Up here we go through the seasons. Clear in April,May and early June. Kinda thick in July and August. Start thinning out in September and October. I fish the conditions no matter what. Nov- Feb it's saugeye fishing in the spillways

The fishing on Guntersville is better this year than I’ve seen in the past 5 years. Some places are so thick you can’t get into it, but the fish in the stuff are great.

Good video. I see small lakes in MO where American Lotus (lily pads) have gotten out of control and wondered what sort of mechanical harvest could be done to control them. Spraying only kills them and adds to the rot on the bottom of the lake. Other big lakes like Mark Twain accomplish this due to their lake levels fluctuating 20 feet or more, not letting aquatic vegetation live for long. It is interesting to note that vegetation in a lake does to the fish and fisherman what limiting forward facing sonar does for the fish and fisherman- it gives fish a safe haven to reproduce, rest and not be fished for all the time-and it makes the fisherman use techniques to catch fish based on where they SHOULD be (using your intuition), vs literally seeing where they are at. Think about it..

My opinion Guntersville is the Mecca of Largemouth and you don't realize that. Lake Erie is Walleye St. Clair is smallmouth Santee is catfish On and On It is my goai to get down and flipping the grass everywhere(like in Ohio) to find donkeys fishing out of a 10.5 ft piece of plastic

Chad I appreciate your insight. My wife and I have been looking at properties around guntersville lake since we fished it 2 years ago for the kbf championship. We love the lake and it's grass. We're waiting for our last child to graduate to relocate to this amazing place, which will be in about 2 more years. We as well would like to monitor this as lake guntersville is our soul reason for wanting to relocate. We will be monitoring this closely as we're not going to buy a home on a fishery that is on the downhill slide due to over spray or poor management of the lake. Anything we can do to get involved, let us know.

My grandpa shows me pictures of santee copper back in the 70’s and 80’s and the quality and amount of fish he used to catch before they killed the grass now it’s super tough and not really worth the drive.

Florida enters the chat😬 they are on a mission to eradicate the grass in every lake in the state. You can fight it all you want, if they are going to spray and they will not stop. They spray Headwaters….a lake that was engineered to be a bass fishing mecca.

Oh no, we will stop them if it gets out of control. 😜

Wheeler was an awesome fishery back in the 90s. Then they killed ALL the grass on the Decatur flats and surrounding area and killed the fishery in the process. It's taken 25 years for Wheeler to really rebound to a decent place again.

My understanding is that TVA / Corps of Engineering spend $1M+ to clean out the turbines, etc. due to the grass situation. Unless there is a solution to reduce that cost in addition to anything else that's forcing the spraying, it's going to be an uphill battle.

Grass Harvesting is the only safe and Bass Friendly way to do grass. Let people throw some Dock and beach pucks out near there docks. Thats what lakes around me do in Michigan. They leave the grass in a way. Just kinda cut it.

And all the waters that Big O drains into, including areas of the Gulf of Mexico. That downstream damage got blamed on the sugar farmers, but it was the killing of the grass on Okeechobee that was the root cause.
