Die Hard isn't just the greatest Christmas movie, or one of the greatest action movies, it's also an amazing example of overcoming marital problems.
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright talk about some of the things John McClane and Holly Gennaro (McClane?) get wrong, things they get right, and how they change and reconcile some of the problems in their marriage. And there might be a few action sequences in there too... Because how can you not want to watch Bruce Willis kick the crap out of a bunch of terrorists?

Women are usually only viewed as tough by exhibiting traditionally male traits. Holly calmly discussing her feelings, caring for her coworkers & using Generro to protect her husband are awesome displays of feminine strength.

I also like that the female lead and the action hero already had a relationship before so he wasn't just overcoming a feat and claiming her as a prize like you see in so many other action movies.

I heard this joke from a Jewish fan of the movie: "Die Hard is a movie about a man waging guerilla warfare against an occupying force with the aid of resources that last far longer than they should. Therefore Die Hard is technically a Hanukkah movie."

In the DVD special features, one of the screenwriters said that he found the heart of Die Hard one night after he had a fight with his wife. It was a real bad one, he stormed out of the house and went for a drive. While he was on the highway, he was suddenly confronted with an intact refrigerator box in the middle of his lane. He couldn't get over to go around it and it looked like the fridge could still be in the box. So he decided to gun it, increase the chance of his car just demolishing the the fridge and hopefully he'd live. Hits the box, it's empty. He pulls over shaking and thinking about how he almost died, then goes to call his wife because all he could think, over and over, was, "what if I died and didn't tell her I'm sorry?" He realized that was McClane's driving force beyond the love of Holly and wanting her to be safe, he couldn't let one of them die without telling her he was sorry.

whispers: Christmas movie...the producer and writer deliberately set this blockbuster at Christmas because they wanted to have an action Christmas Movie.....so it is, indeed, a holiday movie.

Karl, in real life, was a top Russian Ballet dancer alongside Mikhael Baryshnikov. He did all his own stunts in this and the other movies he was in. He defected in 1979 and died in 1995. RIP

When I first got married, my mom told me, "Honey, all those little habits of his that you find so endearing now? Yeah, there will come a time when you'll want to kill him for them. Know that, prepare for it, and you'll be fine.".

The thing I like most about John McClain is that he's vulnerable.

Coincidentally, Die Hard is playing at our local drive-in, and my husband and I went to see it. Such a great movie.

The scene where Holly is negotiating with Hans is great for all the reasons you two put forward, but also one other reason: a lot of action movies tend to put the female lead in a dangerous situation, but don't really give her a lot of character beyond 'damsel in distress that the hero must save'. If the film didn't add this scene, which shows off what kind of person Holly is, it would be harder to care about whether or not she and John mend their relationship at all, because who is she beyond the estranged wife of the male lead?

Could you two do a analysis on the 1st How to train your Dragon ? The relationship between hiccup and his dad struck a cord with me and I want to know how realistic the turnaround of their dynamic was at the end of the movie.

When you talked about how he respected her choice so she respected them, it reminded me of a completely different scenario where I was an extreme hoarder as a child, and my mom would try to get me to throw it all away and I never would, but then when we were cleaning one time, she said she wasn't going to make me get rid of any of it, it just needed to be cleaned up. All of the sudden, it was so much easier to throw it all away, and that's what I did.

Man, I love the subtle but powerful nuance that Alan Rickman brought to his roles - to the extent that, even with his villains, he’s able to make you at least partially like the character. Such a wonderfully talented soul. May he Rest In Peace. ❤️

one of the things that sets this and other great action movies apart is that the goal of the protagonist isn't to kill the bad guys or stop some great crime. His goal is to fix his relationship and get back with his family.
