Education on the misconceptions of wild Black Bears

While trying to find a place that will take these two surrender bears I've been asked to take, I have noticed there are very few bear rescuers that provide spacious areas. And a lot of the people who have been working with bears are older people. Which is something I've been running into while trying to find someone to take the bears. They are too old and they don't want to make the commitment.

I'm actually very nervous on camera when I'm not the one recording it myself. So I noticed a lot of grammar mistakes and other information I leave out since I'm nervous. 😬 When I touched base on Ethan and I taking a chemical immobilization class. And I mentioned not being able to collar the animals without tranquilization, This was specifically animals living in the wild we were taught on. But I learned something new today, that some species you can just gain the trust without traumatizing them. (Because obviously we don't need to tranquilize our foxes to put a collar on them 😂)

Aw, no need to feel nervous if somebody else is recording - just be your natural self as you're very knowledgable about animals & so at ease in their company. If that doesn't work: imagine you're an actress.. the environment is your stage... become THAT actress! (Stanislavsky method acting I believe). You did amazingly well btw - I honestly thought your nerves were due to being so close to the bears!! They were so friendly too. And the chipmunk (I think) & squirrels that climbed down the tree near you - it shows you all have a gentle aura with other animals (I include the bears too!) 😀

Bears are big on location, so the feeds are far away from population centers so there are less run ins this way. Feeding them close to populations does the opposite. However we have garbage and bears have good smell so the feeding them thing is a bit ignorant in that regard. It's not like they can't smell the food. When bears learn that they can steal food the problems begin.

YES! I am a life long woodsman and was appalled when I first saw the title and the opening scenes. Bears across Canada ARE NOT tame or your best buddy. They are very, very wild and very, very indifferent to the sentiments of humans - they have none. Bears cannot survive in the wild because they are empathetic, sympathetic, or sentimental in any way. The other deadly misinformation, is to say they are not killers. They hunt and KILL moose, deer, elk, and occasionally people. I survived a bear attack ONLY because I shot it. They are killers. They are also omnivores, and will gravitate to easier food they can digest successfully, like berries, roots and living grubs from under rocks and roots. And that is why the myth of gentle vegetarian image emerges. But it is a dangerous presumption.

MMost Black bears That don't know you, Often will do this once. It's a BLUFF & Very short "Charge With an Exhale. To see how you React. If you act "Cool" They KNOW you have no fear of them. If you "Freak out" it's probably still probably OK. I think they expect that. But I don't know. I Never "Freaked out" Often they attempt to use the soft part of their paw & tap my leg. in a playful way. If you toss them a ball or even a stick, they understand it as play. But I didn't tell you that !!!

When I was pet sitting for my friends on the outskirts of town there were multiple times I'd hear the bears on the front porch, open the door and say "hey I'm gonna have to ask you to leave" and they'd bolt. Always fun.

We lived in a rural area where many bears visited our yard. If they came too close to the house, I found saying "Don't make me come out there," in a stern mom-voice always did the trick. We would cover our outdoor water spigot with a foam insulator in the winter, and every spring the bears would tear it off looking for food!. I used some spray to deter dogs and cats from climbing on indoor couch and chairs, and the bears never touched the insulator again.

Some of the male black bears in bulking up season (August onwards) can get VERY AGGRESSIVE. And of course momma bears with cubs can get understandably aggressive as well. I grew up in black bear country in Massachusetts; please, the public needs to understand that as cute as the bears can look, they are NOT puppy dogs.

Definitely. Bears are very powerful and some of us have had bad encounters or know someone who unfortunately didn’t make it. So any of us who’ve lived around bears definitely respect them and keep our distance. My walks in the trails though can be so nerve wracking. -- bears are surprisingly quiet. They can just be around the corner.. or all the way up a tree!

@@bamboorootbeer When I was growing up in Massachusetts, I always went out for walks with my neighbors dogs which were beagles and very vocal. Plus I made a lot of noise, talking to them , singing a bit, whatever. On the theory that I wanted to be noisy specifically to have any bears around hear me first so there would be no surprise meetings. This was 45 years ago and it seemed to work. Just an idea for you.

I live about 20 miles outside Pittsburgh. Friends of mine (a married couple) have 3 black bears that visit their backyard almost every morning for the express purpose of taking a dip in their pool. They splash around for about 10-15 minutes and then they leave.

​@@sixslinger9951The instructor actually personally knew Timothy Treadwell. And he did touch base on the fact that Timothy lived amongst grizzly bears for 12 years before this happened. Maybe a 1 and 600+ bear ratio before his death. People always hear of the bear attacks. But they don't hear of how uncommon it is. There will always be that one animal that is a little messed up in the brain , mental.... This is with any species. But Timothy treadwell should have taken more safety precautions.

There HAVE been fatal human attacks in New JERSEY by male black bears. Being noisy usually will scare off a black bear. And one must not leave garbage and other food around. Their sense of smell is incredible. This save a fox couple means well but this is not the whole story on black bears.

She had mentioned that black bears don't really attack people to eat them. California within the last month or so just had its first black bear fatality, in which an elderly woman was at home alone, and the black bear actually broke down her front door. He returned a few times over the next couple of days to finish up his meal. And earlier this year, a man was sitting on his porch at home in Arizona, and a black bear attacked and killed him.

She is feeding them. Bad idea for wild bears. Bears are best when they fear people and are skittish. People get hurt when bears get comfortable with people and associate them with food. These interactions often leading to euthanization of those animals after relocation fails and they have too many human bear interactions. People are almost never hurt by wild bears unless cubs are involved or the bear is too comfortable with humans.

@@hecanseeme8210 The way I see it, if the bear isn't running after being alerted to your presence, Keep your distance. That bear is more dangerous than the average bear. They are incredible animals and I understand the desire to interact with then and a seemingly tame bear is very attractive. But it's one of the more dangerous situations you can be in. When your cat or dog decides to bite or scratch you out generally means some stern words and a bandaid. When a bear does it, it's a trip to the ER. All animals have the potential to get upset or bothered by you and to show you their dissatisfaction. The difference is that your cat and dog don't have nearly the potential to cause serious bodily injury and they have been selectively breed to be more docile and obedient.

Bears are also individuals and so an individual bear may have a preference for a specific taste or type of food just like tastes differ from human to human. There's no reason to think there are absolutely no bears who have picked up a taste for some sort of human food they can't get in the wild even if it was generally true that bears preferred wild food to human food (which is maybe a dubious claim).

I often have black bears on my property. I am not afraid of them, but I would never feed them, especially by hand. They are just too big and unpredictable. And they don't really "flee." Mostly they will glance at you and go about their business. If you make enough noise, they will slowly saunter away.

From what I understand it's normally not good to feed wild bears or at least not in human-populated areas because then they associate that location and humans with food. Bears that come near humans are then seen as a threat and potentially need to be put down.

@@heavenlywanderer This is a research center (I have been there) where it is necessary to desensitize the bears by feeding them in order to collar them. It is on 38 acres of land abutting the National Forest. Researchers spend days following a Bear through the woods recording his activities on a computer. It is necessary for the bear accept the researcher.When I was there they told us "Don't try this at home"I hope that makes you feel better.

No, it is not a good idea to attract bears to picnic grounds etc... because the next occupant may not want them around. I live in the north, in Canada, where we never,never encourage people to feed bears. You can’t possibly know what will provoke a serious reaction from a wild bear. Even a small bear can cause you great injuries. They are very fast and powerful. Please just avoid bears when ever you can, back away slowly, never run. Sing out loud when walking in the bush or berry picking so that you don’t come upon a bear and startle it as this can be dangerous. Please don’t admire their “cute fuzziness” admire there strength and agility and speed, from a safe distance of course.

I agree with you 💯. Before 9/11, my grandfather and I used to go fishing in North Canada. Past where paved roads stopped. The black bears you guys have up there are much bigger and seem to have no fear of people, unless you let off a gunshot. I remember living in Poland and they would come around to our farm to eat sugar beets. It was my job to feed them beet scraps and other things that were left over, and then they would leave. 🙂❤️ I don't know why people harm these blessed creatures so much. They're such clumsy lil chunky bois.

BLack bears? Not much more reason to harm one than a horse or deer. Encountered 200 & change on foot over the decades, no real problems. Evil horses do exist though. Just like with humans. Plus food conditioning can make them a menace. Entitlement issues I reckon. Like when your cat gets pissed 2 minutes after you miss feed time. OTHER American bears? I carry a 10mm (very high powered) semi-automatic in Grizzly country. A grizzly is more like a hippo with lion energy. Brown bears are just another name for Grizzly. Ish. Then there's the one that *does* stalk & eat humans (polar.)

No, people are not monsters. What a ridiculous and cruel thing to say. I love black bears, they are beautiful creatures. There are absolutely black bear attacks, though you are correct - they are generally shy of humans. However, I find this vid a bit naive, though I fully support caretaking that is in the bears' best interest. You need to make it VERY CLEAR, that this is a special situation and that people should NEVER approach black bears with food or otherwise.

Well... while these stations are wonderful, they don't mitigate every bear. It's common in campsites to have bear lockers to store anything that smells and instructions for encounters because, though you won't be attacked unprovoked, bears will come through and will find food or unlucky campers. They're usually those with behavioral issues, cubs, or human experiences, but it's not unheard of to be awoken in the night by a snort just outside your tent and the presence of 1-3 curious new friends. It has never happened to me personally, but I've watched it play out in more serious ways.

I've been between a momma & cubs once (of a couple hundred encounters.) No issues. This was on a VERY popular trail pretty close to DC though. She was probably pretty well-acclimated to people. Your mileage JUST might vary. The only time I've had a problem was sort of an aborted bluff charge with a pretty big male. I did the old park ranger move: put your hands up in a Y, don't look the bear in the eye but do face him directly, say "whoa bear, whoa bear" with a basso tone while backing up slowly. It worked. I don't think old boy's was up for scaring the hikes that day. He totally phoned it in.

State Farm has a temple to each on a campus in Bloomington. Poor Zoroaster got budget-axed again. RFK Jr. of gods, poor guy. I live on 8 acres at the foot of a mountain outside of Gatlinburg, TN. I live with Black Bears. All sizes. Black Bears that are born and raised around human habitat for the most part are benign. But: THEY ARE NOT HARMLESS!!!! You can get hurt in a New York Minute. Big Time !!!! Every Year there is some IDIOT that stops the car to have a close encounter photo op. Many times this is a Huge Mistake. A minimum Swat with those razor embedded Claws will do real damage and if the bear charges you will know what the term "World Of Hurt Is!!! Big Time!!! Same thing here in South Dakota, except you can replace bear with buffalo. No one hunts them after a tourist gets gored or thrown though. I imagine most of the medical staff remind the unfortunate tourist that the road sign reads: "buffalo are dangerous, do not approach." Everyone else looks at them like they're a few bricks short of a wall.

Then they'll be treated as potentially aggressive or habituated and terminated. In British Columbia Canada (the most densely populated black bear aria in the world), though rare, black bears can will and do mall people. It is a complete misconception that all black bears are not dangerous. What makes these bears so dangerous is that they usually are not but the table can turn quickly and has done without warning. This is fact not fiction. Always be alert, practice distance and caution, is the best advice.

I'm from Juneau and I remember from a few years ago of a fatal black bear attack over in Laird Hot Springs in the Yukon Territory. We're used to living around black bears.....we even had one inside our house one time (he didn't like the wife's cooking and left), but seriously I love watching them.........from a DISTANCE!

Most negative encounters with wildlife in general, not only bears, are usually preventable situations where the humans encroaching on the habitats of the wildlife do stupid things and put themselves in danger. So often I've seen ignorant tourists provoking animals and simply getting too close. My wife and I lived with black bears for 25 years in Northwestern Ontario, Canada, and encountered individuals of widely varying temperaments. Whatever your attitude toward them is, do not think you can wander around the woods hand-feeding them. Most will retreat from a simple shout or clap of hands but some will not; and there is no way to know which is which.

Change anything about the encounter and it can go horribly the other way. I have many decades of experience in wild places like the gentleman above from NW Ontario to my eventual settlement in the West of Canada. I can say the look in their eyes while acting cute is the exact same look they have when pulling someone's tender muscle tissue away from the inner thigh as food - complete indifference, no sentiment at all. All those cold, wet stormy nights rummaging and hunting for food in the wild become more evident than our desires to tame and share compassion.

Your wild black bears have such great manners...for the most part! I live right next door to a large pear orchard here in SW Oregon. On its other side the Siskiyou Mountains quickly rise up to elevations above 7000 feet for over a hundred miles all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Living here I have discovered black bears absolutely love pears, and with hundreds left to fall on the ground after each season's commercial harvest the bears, and the deer can't resist this last treat stocking-up before their winter hibernation...and, as an extra treat the consumed pears ferment after being eaten: happy-drunk black bears! All too often on my first morning walk with my dogs (Alaskan Malamutes) scattered about the orchard are passed-out black bears. Love the comedy there! However, most of these are "momma bears" with one or more, less than a year old cubs in tow...that is until momma passes out, then my property, and sometimes my gentle "mals" become their fav playground/-mates... ... ...yes, I'm most careful not to stay outside too long when the bears and cubs are about...don't want to anger a hung-over bear looking for her cubs...don't want the cubs to overstay their foray into the orchard. All in all this has been, continues to be, a peaceful joy to be so close to such nature...except when I have to go to the store for something and there's a 300lb rolly-polly bear passed-out in the middle of my driveway...OK, just go back in the house, figure something else for breakfast patiently awaiting "her" to wake-up and wander off, hopefully with her cubs in tow...so good so far! I really wish I could more intimately befriend them...build some super-sized dog(bear)houses for them to sleep here, protected from the hunters who prowl the mountains around these parts, but legally I would be in big trouble if caught doing so...and the bears equally, if not in worse trouble. Just thought you'd lie to know❤

Just have to keep in mind that they're wild animals and not pets, but eventually the wild animals might relate the particular group of humans as a source of food and security and could turn around and start viewing them as part of the pack - depending on how long the relationship goes on for. Though this scenario is always an exception than the expectation.

I feed the animals in my neck of the woods in Maryland, and they are all so sweet with each other! I have deer, foxes, and raccoon and groundhogs and birds and squirrels eating in harmony together ❤️ and an occasional opossum 😃 They are not starving, so they are content and happy and so playful with each other❤ And every spring, they show their appreciation by bringing their babies in for me to see, and what a sight that is 💗💕

I was hiking in the Ely area near Dry Lake, heard a cry then a huffing sound and chomping sound….i looked around and did not see the bear, but it saw me. I made some noise and slowly walked out of the area, as I looked around I saw fresh bear claw marks on a Birch Tree. You really should not hand feed wild bears. They will associate people with food, regardless if you have a container you think they know.

It's likely they live in an area where they forage for most of their food and at times come here for a free meal though probably not on a regular basis. I recommend reading books and learning stuff, liek what habituation *actually* means. If these bears were coming on a daily or weekly basis I'd be concerned, but that's highly unlikely. What's happening is these bears probably show up a few times throughout the season and that's probably it. That's not habituation my guy, go read up about animal behavior and ABA before speaking on something you know nothing about.

There's a few other snags with your logic, one being that black bears are highly discretionary, they might trust this location, but they certainly won't trust a random person out in the world. Brown bears are just more bold and aggressive. They also rely on hunting more than black bears do. We recently had a black bear foraging in our neighborhood, it avoided people as much as it could, wanted nothing to do with us even though it was hungry and knew human garbage could contain food. Unfortunately it looked like her season was going poorly, had she had enough habitat to actually forage properly she never would come near human territory. The difference between brown and black bears is a brownie will demand food and then make you a meal if they want, they'll attack because they want something. A black bear will likely not do that, they'll lose interest or, as is most common, never be seen at all. The only time you'll need to be worried is a momma bear with cubs, a male during mating season, or a black bear that is frightened. I'm not suggesting feeding your local black bears, what I'm saying is whether it's her hand or a local trash can the bears know it's human sourced food, but you'll likely notice that brown bears when exposed to trash will become overly comfortable with people and black bears typically never become that confident with humans. Yes, extremely rarely black bears have hurt people. I have only ever read of 3 fatalities and one of them was clearly a bear that wasn't habituated, it was likely starving and desperate. My suggestion is to read up on subjects and base your opinions on data (preferably from a scientific journal) before saying something. To the informed you look quite ignorant.

I don't hunt bears, I love bears and all wildlife, I believe in co-existsing as much as possible. BUT, we are NOT monsters in their habitat. And, a predatory attack by a bear is most likely going to be from a blackie - not a grizzly. Exceptions may be drawn regarding polar bears, which do hunt humans. Feeding blackies does bring out their more benign side, but they are NOT predictable every time you meet one on the trail. Common belief is that blackies will run away almost every time, but some do not - as in the case of one that did not run from me, in my camp. Some will completely ignore you and wreck everything you have. Mine threatened me with all the boxes checked off for a charge, but he changed his mind. Good thing for both of us because I had a bead on him, but I doubt it would have stopped him from thrashing me badly before he died. He decided to not push things and turned and walked slowly away. Not all bears are afraid of humans. Not all humans are monsters.

It's a real mixed bag because people should respect the bears, but there is no reason to fear them like they're bloodthirsty monsters so you have lots of videos of people demonstrating how chill and non-threatening they are... but they can still totally kill you and you need to respect their space and you don't want people trying to make stupid tiktoks or something with wild bears so other people overemphasize that "they can kill you and are dangerous" aspect so you don't get crazies trying to pet the bears. well, this information is helpful to get a better understanding of black bears but, lets not get too too comfortable with them . A few years back a hiker in a Newjersey state park was mauled to death by a black bear . He wandered off on his own away fromt he group he was with . He was found dead later all torn up by a black bear .

In Canada people get fined $60,000 for feeding black bears. I saw something in the news about a woman being fined that much for feeding a bear apples in her backyard.

@DorisDay-lw4xs Hi, I live in the North Georgia Mountains. Plenty of black bear here. What do they smell like? Well... Imagine a black lab (dog) (the kind with the oily skin/hair) that rolled in stinky puddle water and then in poop. Now, multiply that smell by like 100. We can seriously smell them from a quarter mile away. Sometimes farther depending on the wind. But they are pretty harmless. Quite docile and a little lazy. Much like a big lazy dog. We don't put any food scraps in the trash because we don't like cleaning up the mess they will make of the trash if we do. ☮

Those are the aforementioned grizzly bears. Black bears very rarely attack or kill people. That doesn't mean go out and make one a pet or sleep with them. Chances are they're going to run from or ignore you

You are right. These people have a very limited exposure to these animals and are spreading deadly mis-information about them as a result. I saw a shark in a tank at a Sea Aquarium once, seemed friendly .... limited knowledge = big problems.

I can find two bear attack in that area in recent times. The one in 2023 was not fatal and is noticed it was a defensive behaviour. The one in 2014 that claimed the life of a technichian at an petroleum extraction point got the bear euthanized and the body was found nearby, no mention about anyone being eaten in a predatory behaviour. I would add also i'm not going to buy that the employers at the petrol station are kind to wildlife and i'm not surprised if it bite back.

Very good: when I was young we went to Crater Lake Oregon and after my mom pored chocolate milk into paper cups on the picnic table a mother black bear with clubs came up and drank the Chocolate milk. I was 10 years old and we backed up to the other side of the picnic table: they left right after she drank the milk. And I have pictures of the bear drinking from the paper cup.

Okay, Do this somewhere else outside of the area that you are in. You just said this is a feeding station. The bear are conditioned to be fed their. They know that they don't have to hunt at this area. Try this outside this area and you will be food. Cute but still deadly.

I work on and off in the Canadian oil patch. Years ago, at Suncor refinery, a scaffolder girl stepped out of the Porta potty at the refinery, and a black bear pounced on her. There was a gang of around 8 big guys trying to get it off of her, hitting it with hammers and scaffolding poles, but he wouldn't let go. Sadly, she passed away.

I have never been more jealous of anyone in my life, lol. I love bears. I live in Northern Ontario, Canada and we have bears all over our city right now, but sadly none in my yard. I am heading out to camp next week and hopefully will get to see a bear and take some pics. I used to hand feed the bears at our park when I was a little girl. I love black bears.
