It's disgusting that they're still allowed to sell goldfish at fairs over here. Someone needs to start a petition to get it banned. :(

I agree. There’s enough people on KZbin that could raise awareness of this.
@jordynchan51034 жыл бұрын
Completely agreed. Apparently all the goldfish that don't get given out when the fair ends get thrown into the dumpster and written off as a business expense. I know that several cities on the US have laws banning live animals from being given out by carnivals.
@pondguru5 жыл бұрын
I remember when I had the shop every year we would get people coming in wanting to but 100 - 200 small goldfish and I always turned them down. The law that was set up to supposedly protect the goldfish being used as prizes at fairs is rendered toothless as a caveat was inserted to allow them to still be given as prizes - if whoever was giving them away offered a 'suitable' tank for sale they were still allowed to give them as prizes. However, that 'suitable tank' is invariably a small bowl or a plastic tank (with no filtration) holding only a couple of litres of water and as we know that is totally unsuitable for keeping any fish never mind a goldfish. The law is well and truly 'an ass'. Just another case proving that for the most part people don't give a crap about how they keep their 'pets'.................
@SimplyShrimps5 жыл бұрын
It’s stupid. We should start a petition ✌️
@pondguru5 жыл бұрын
@@SimplyShrimps If I started a petition for everything the human race does against nature there would be thousands of petitions, lol It's really about education (or a lack of education) but when you can see many of the mega-popular aquatic channels on KZbin keeping fish in unsuitable conditions with woeful filtration, killing their fish through ignorance then crying to the sheeple watching their videos for money to make the situation better it's no wonder that so many morons think it's OK to keep fish in a bowl.

I have a same aquarium that contains goldfish being understocked. Overstocking fish is sometimes an issue, but overall the waste is a great issue since the buildup of it can cause harmful bacteria and ammonia spike. An inch of fish per gallon to me isn't that always important, but most of all getting to test the water's parameters is a great way to make a fresh start on cleaning the water frequently when you have more than enough fish to keep at a certain volume!

The fact they specified a size made me worry that this person wanted them as feeder fish (even though that's illegal here and they should know it). In fact, aren't their stricter controls on funfair goldfish now? 🤔 If people really care about this hobby, they won't be offended when asked all these questions and even be prepared to be a little disappointed when they're advised the fish they might have their heart set on isn't suitable for their setup. Here in the USA, New Orleans Louisiana exactas they have pet smarts and Walmart’s with 2-300 inch maybe 2, in a single 125 gallon tank. 4 tanks per store I’d say close to 1000-1250 fish in less than 600 gallons. Priced really low at 11-22cents & labeled as feeder fish, yet the same fish in different tanks with pretty spots or different colors are fancy goldfish not feeders. Hmmm

my first goldfish was from a fair.it lucked out cause at the time my family was trying to setup a large fish tank but was failing at it.so my parents put him in the tank thinking he was going to die in a week. but he lived. in fact he lived through several moves and died at 19 years old from a tumor/cancer. also the reason why we were failing was cause the fish we bought were dyed.we didn't know it at the time how harmful it was to the fish.also we really just wanted the fish cause they were see through(they were glass fish) not cause they were dyed.(it was before internet and decent info on fish came out) (also do they even sell glass fish anymore?)

I think goldfish should 10000% be illegal to get at fairs or as prizes for anything really. It really isn't right people give away fish without making sure they have a proper set ups or letting people "hey this goldfish can grow to 12 inches and also do you know what the nitrogen cycle is???" Or something like that. I'm dealing with that issue now as my goldfish I won as prizes 10 years ago are still alive but I recently found out they're no doing well :( at least I learned I just wish someone had told me when I was younger so I never would have gotten these fish I didn't know how to keep. I just bought a 75 gallon tank for them and set it up I've learned a lot about fish so I'm just happy I can give them a proper home :) I know it's not a pond but sadly they're already stunted so the 75 gallons should be very good for them.

While I think you did the right thing, as a person on the opposite end of the spectrum I hate having to jump through hoops to prove I'm not an amateur who forgot to do his research. I would've probably left your shop too without buying anything. Sure, you're selling living beings and you have to show a modicum of concern where they'll end up, but there are so many different factors going into what makes a suitable environment for what kind of fish, that stocking recommendations based on volume only are basically complete bullshit. I'd find it a waste of both of our time trying to explain a process that took over a year setting up and that has worked for me for several generations of fish since, in a tank you'd consider extremely overstocked. I've got close to a hundred healthy, active but non-competitive endler guppies in a 30l tank without a lid. They are notorious jumpers, I haven't seen a dead one yet in or outside a tank. Why this works at all and why it works really well would take me twice as long to explain than the runtime of this video. Do you have 20 minutes to waste on one customer to make sure a couple of fish that cost 1.5 quid a pop end up in good hands? It's not a viable business practice to say the least.
@SimplyShrimps5 жыл бұрын
If you were that person and explained what you just said them I’d be more than willing to hear what you have to say as it sounds very interesting. Another factor is that working in a retail store that deal with fish we have a pet shop license and there are certain factors that we have to account for or else we risk loosing it.

there are a ton fish shops that have been driven into the ground in my area cause they had the mentality of sell fish without question. cause they drove away any loyal customers sells they could of had. animals are not a simple product to be sold without question. 1. you can be contributing to massive amounts of animal cruelty. 2.customers that actually care about fish and will buy dry goods from you are often driven away when they know your store is willing to contribute to cruelty.which is a bad thing since most pet store sells are food not live animals. cause people will need pet food more often then they'd need a pet. so that £500 would actually cost the business money in the long run.
