What a task you guys accomplished- I enjoy the way Bob stands back and let’s you try it your way and then just plainly throws in a tip “if you are lower you will get better leverage.” People don’t realize if you pile all the wood outdoors it will get wet and weigh a ton more to move and attract a whole new set of problems via vermin and molds etc. It sure would be nice if the city gave you a burn permit (given your kind of desolate location) but that would just make things too convenient. Lol.

Hi Chris. Creosote was mostly used on telephone poles, railroad ties and such to preserve them. I would guess linseed oil or pitched tar. Also does anyone around there own a full size dump truck that you could rent by the hour. That would be great to park outside a loading door and fill up with piles of trash and make trips to the dump. Looking good though and I'm glad you didn't have a leak LOL

That lumber is most likely scorched or blackened by a torch. It’s very common in Northern European climates to preserve wood, semi waterproof it and definitely works for pest control. There are 1,000 plus year old buildings all over Scandinavia built of scorched wood. That huge door would make an awesome table just needs resurfaced, skirting and legs. I loved Bob’s take on your plan to take the wall down. Multiple “okays” in a row essentially means let’s do things the most complicated way possible haha! I was totally Team Bob on this one. Just cut in manageable pieces and get it done. OR use the tractor from the start haha! Nice job guys!

cool info about the beams. They don't smell like creosote so I think you might be right.

Excited to see those beams repurposed. They'd make a great deck or music stage. Planed down, even a bar top.
@oldtop46825 ай бұрын
Beams that actually measure 2"x12" are really hard to find other than salvage. For the trash wood I'd put that tractor to work! You can strap it into bundles and pull it out that end door. Which makes me think.....can you get a construction dumpster through that door? It would save a lot of steps. Especially, if you can pull it in further with the tractor (minding the filled weight later). Just some random thoughts.

I need to get a front loader but they cost almost as much as the tractor.

Out off that old wood you should make 3 sections like the front off a ball dozer. Mount it to the front of the tractor. Plus the wood out. Leave a two each gap at the bottom so it not on the floor. Or Evan better if you have any rubber put that a the bottom so it touches the floor and push ???
@brickandsole5 ай бұрын
like a bull dozer wedge? interesting.

Robert as you know my business activities was that of an auctioneer. Occasionally new projects presented themselves to me where a building was in a less than tidy situation. Before we actually started locking up the auction I insisted that my team go through every item of clutter and line it up And centralise like with like so that we then made the place safer, more organised, easier to find the things that we want and amongst the other final things was that we could easily move ourselves and assets around the structure as easily as possible. Whilst you don’t want to move items from floor to floor at this stage I really believe that you will get a better result overall once the stacks of junk have been re-organised into tidy stacks of useful items especially if you can palletised them especially on the ground or first floor for you Yanks now that you have a workable Forklift. If only my passport was still current, I would love to come over to your part of the world and get stuck into it. I suggest with respect that you should stop for the time being stripping walls of coverings and get on with the tidying up process. Enclosing I really enjoy watching what you are achieving even though Summit seems a bit of a lower priority at this stage in my viewpoint.

So nice of you to offer your expertise and knowledge. You definitely have the experience to make good recommendations! I’ve often wish I too could go and help out (just with the cleaning/organizing part) 😉
@bobrobert94135 ай бұрын
It is a very slow process cleaning out the building. Dumpsters are skiffs as you call them are very expensive and he doesn't have the budget right now for that so unfortunately we have to do a little at a time. There has been several auctions held at the building in a lot of stuff did get auctioned off unfortunately most of what's left is just trash. Bob
@brickandsole5 ай бұрын
that is actually starting to happen more and more. also I have a meeting with a retired auctioneer soon. Which if it pans out will be huge for me and definitely be interesting video for you.

If those beams were treated with creosote, a quick sniff test should be able to confirm.

I did, and no detectable odor. is that true even if they are 110 years old?
@billfolsom42035 ай бұрын
@coldwarmercantile I don't know how long the smell remains. Thinking about it, though, creosote was used for wood that would be exposed to the weather such as telephone poles and railroad ties. BTW, I really enjoyed today's brush clearing episode.
