MONSTERA DELICIOSA large form exists & I finally found one to call my own. Join me on this Massive Monstera Makeover to learn something about it's care and watch her full transformation. I had to repot this Monstera Deliciosa and I also had to take stem cuttings from it to propagate. Let me tell you it was a journey! Things didn't turn out as planned and rootrot is a B****. I had a lot of fun working on such a challenging project and we are definetly not done yet!
Enjoy ♥

💚UPDATE on the plant ➡: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpW2f36Cg56ai7csi=cwJROxLwXDW25HT0 I was incredibly sad the plant was in such a bad condition. I wish I could have saved more leaves and preserved this beautiful mature specimen. It really hurt to cut her down so radically. She is at the current moment, merely a shadow of herself. Unfortunately the state of the roots was devastating. I am incredibly thankful I was even able to find a true large form Monstera and I promise I will do my very best to give her a new breath of life in my home. I intend to grow and love her for a long time to come. Thank you for watching and being part of this experience, see u soon 💚

Definitely try a seaweed solution to help rejuvenate those poor roots & when you do repot it again a 2:1 mix of potting mix & perlite to make it a light & airy mix. I have an outdoor gigantic monstera 5m long x 2m high that I’m water propagating atm to make some new little monsteras…. such a pity I couldn’t send you 1 but as I’m in South Australia that’s sadly pretty well impossible. Really enjoyed your video & fingers xed for your plant to survive

You absolutely did the right thing cutting it down. I gree up with teo of these in my childhood home, I used to pretend it was a jungle my smurfs lived in 😂 (the 80'). They were HUGE and when we moved my mom donated them to the church because frankly that's the only place they fit 😄. I've wanted my own since then, bought a speciment probably 10y ago, and yeah... still quite small 🙄 I only recently looked into it and realiced I had a "small leaf" version, the "Monstera Borsigiana", and obviously I went on a hunt to find a true "Monstera Dedeliciosa". Hard to find... mostly found one or two leaf cuttings for 20-50€. And then... I found someone giving a way a "small" plant 😍 She thought it was sick or dying 😄 Possibly too much sudden light and for sure too small pot with no support to climb on, it look really healthy otherwise! Obviously I went to get it! 😁 That was yesterday. It's now resting in my livingroom and I'm sooooo exstatic!!! The stem is only 20cm, but it's full of leaves, 8 actually. And almost all have perforations and holes, and the true deliciosa telling of wavy knobby edges where the leafs meats the stems 😁😍🥰. I'm sooo happy 😄. My mom was a devoted plant lover and died 2018 so this brings up so many memories and emotions. ❤

A small tip: When trimming browned portions off leaves, a good idea is to leave a really thin strip of brown on the leaf so you can see if the browning got worse. It's also better because it doesn't open new wounds on the leaf.
@LeafyLuster
@LeafyLuster Жыл бұрын
You're right Aiden, in hindsight I should have definetly been a little bit more careful cutting those pieces off. I can see a little new yellow brown edge. I'll think of you next time I have to trim something for sure. 😊 I'ts probably way less stressful for the plant if you only cut off dead material too. Thanks for the advice 💚

This brought back some painful memories: when I lived in a WG with a huge communal space I found a 25 year old large form monstera to pick up for free. We picked it up on the other side of the country with a van. I had to move out after a while and when I came back a year later the 5 meter tall mama and all the 'small' (1 to 2m) offshoots had died back to a handful of yellow and brown leaves. A group of 10 people was unable to keep that poor baby alive. It was devastating. Especially because I didn't know about the distinction between large and small form at the time. If I had I would have taken a cutting with me on moving out, and not just the small form one from my bedroom. She's doing great now though, she just hit the ceiling last week. But I would do almost anything to sit in a chair reading a book underneath those giant leaves again.

Totally agree Carol! That was one of my thoughts too. Even if just the top cutting keeps on growing I would be over the moon. I also would have been happy with just a cutting of this plant, but the sellers were moving house and didn't want to take the plant with them. So obviously if I can, I will take on such a giant with joy. 🥰 Always happy to hear from you 💚

@LeafyLuster
@LeafyLuster Жыл бұрын

If you want your smaller leaved monstera to become "big form," I've found they need a few things. 1. Chunky, well-draining potting soil. I added sphagnum moss and orchid bark mix to cheap/standard, run-of-the-mill potting soil. 2. Slow release granular fertilizer. I've used Espoma Plant-tone as a topper every growing season, and added Osmacote pellets to the soil when repotting. 3. Strong but mostly indirect sunlight. They can take direct sun for a few hours (if slowly and properly acclimated!). I repotted a sad looking monstera, did all of the above and it got huge in a single year outside. It's a single stem cutting, so perhaps being the only stem the plant focused growth.

The combination of compost and perlite would do wonders for water retention, but the only way to stop roots from rotting is to use an open substrate (so something like a mix of sharp grit, perlite, bark chippings and coir or compost). Is this something you considered at all? Also, a black bin bag over the entire aerial root system usually help with transpiration for stressed plants. Finally, consider a humate-based plant stress reliever tonic. They can do wonders in the short term for getting the plant back into its rhythm. Good job with a plant that size!

This dream plant reminds me why i grow plants! Fortunately the little plant i bought in 2018 in a small berlin nursery turned out to be a large form monstera ❤ it’s already getting huge, but nothing in comparison to your lucky find Hopefully your monstera will bounce back soon, you did a great job saving it. Can’t wait to see updates on this one 😍

That's amazing. Lucky you found a large form. Seeing it grow up from a young plant must be really rewarding 😊 updates will 100% follow. I'm really curious how long I will have to wait for a new leaf ☠️😂

I gasped so hard when you were getting it propagated and the stem snapped 🙈🤣 Poor dude is a mess. You did so good at freeing those roots! They probably put sand to keep the soil from soaking up too much water? We love a supportive bf

Your welcome Kitkatt 😁 the "small form" leaves can get quite big too but if you compare them they will never reach the size of the large form. 🤓

Hallo Kristina! Ich bin Diego aus Buenos Aires, Argentinen. That plant looks amazing! You should make an update on it. Please don't give up. Once I was given a Mostera Deliciosa just like that and I didn't have enough place to plant it. (The place where I live is cold during winter but it doesn't snow). I remember throwing somewhere on my backyard a cutting whitout any leaf and 6 months later finding new growth popping out. So, yours will be a beautiful large form one! Abrazo.

Servus! Congratulations on your monstera. My favorite plant. I am blessed to be growing mine from a cuttings of my mother’s plant. In my care for 12 years now and it’s more than 40 years old as it was in our house when I was a child. Although I grew up knowing it as a split leaf philodendron. 😂 I’m reporting myself in a couple weeks. I have 4 vines going in the current pot. One primary and three are smaller. Going to separate them and add a Thai con in the pot. I think the multi tone look will be a stunner. That leaf is gorgeous. I think yours has me by size. My latest one broke 76 cm and is still hardening off. My goal is >91cm hopefully this summer. I would keep the chonk out of the water and only put in the aerial roots. Stop it from rotting. Good growing!

Hi Richard, wow 40 years! I imagine it to be massive! I love that you took over the plant from your mother and keep growing it out yourself. Crazy how old plants can get when there is someone taking good care of them. Love that! I feel like plant names are changing constantly so maybe it'll be called something completely different in 20 years 😂. I would love to see that thai with your big monstera. I'm all for it, i bet it will look absolutely stunning once they are potted together. Thank you so much for the tip with the roots & for leaving such a sweet and thoughtful comment. See you in the next video & good luck with your plants😊🌿

Ooh that monstera is beautiful!! Shocked it had so much root rot! I think you could've saved the leggy and bare stalk by notching it near the nodes to promote new growth there. Also I've been taught a chunky mix that allows for airpockets is better than regular soil for aroids. I'm excited to see the new growth on the propagations
@LeafyLuster
@LeafyLuster Жыл бұрын
Hi 😊 I think you're right. I didn't even think of notching as a possibility. I just recently watched a video from @unplantparenthood about notching and thought the exact same thing. Unfortunately a little too late 😅. I use perlite and orchid bark in my soil for more airation. I Agree, it makes for better soil. 😁 I'm glad you enjoyed your time here. Updates will follow, although I fear there will be a great deal of patience involved 😅.

Reminds me of my childhood ... My mother was obsessed with them, and grew so many this size.. She regularly sold them to a massive tourist glasshouse ... ...as they got so high. About 16ft tall.!! It grew in the hall , went up the stairs into the landing ( upper floor hall ). It was enormous .😳 She regularly cut them and separated them etc.. But never cut them to pieces like the video. I wish she had now. Eventually they eiher died or she gave them away . But they were hard work sometimes... ...especially repotting etc ..lol. I remember using milk to clean the leaves in the 70s.😆 Loved the video and information..thank you... Makes me inspired to buy a new one for my next house . 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚

Hi Morgan, wow 16 ft in a house on multiple floors, that's really just like in a conservatory 😍😍. I don't even know how one would start repotting or moving such a giant plant 😅. Thank you for sharing that story with me 😊. Do you know why you had to clean them with milk ? Was is something about pests or just to clean them? Very interesting.

@@LeafyLuster Trust me , it was a nightmare , and a familly event when it was time to repot . We all helped . 4 of us grappling with the whole thing. We repotted it where it stood , using plastic sheets to protect hall floor. Mother would tie the plant up against the stair rail for support . Then it reached the 1st floor attic door .madness! Sometimes we had to repot many in one go. They were all giants ..😳😳😆 We even had a massive round glass bottle full of plants , typical 70s. But father accidently smashed it , using the hoover to clean the hall. Oops..😆 Mother wasnt too happy, to say the least . The milk was just to clean , then leave a shine on the leaves . Its so strange , my father and I even used milk as top coat for our paintings. Nowadays , i dont know how it never went off or left a bad scent . But it worked ! This was the 70s and 80s . The plants seem to like it ...they all grew beautifully . Ahh the good old days , you cant beat them. 🥰

Richtig klasse Video. Bin gespannt auf ein Update 💚

@Leafy_Luster My primary plant hobby is Bonsai. I do a lot of cuttings and try to avoid contamination whenever I can. What I've noticed is particularly vigorous plants are more prone to long term root rot. They don't outright die, they live despite waterlogged, aerobic soil. Always better be safe than risk losing a favorite plant. Great content btw, keep the fun videos coming!

Glad you enjoyed it and thank you so much for the kind words. The mother plant took a bad downward turn but I finally got new growth from the stem, where I cut it, so it's alive 🥳🥳🥳. The propagations in water are all showing nice roots and new growth already. The stumps in moss are slower, only 2 of the 5 pieces show root growth and swelling axillary buds. I'm definitely in for a long lesson on patience 😅.
