November 19, 2021 | Since its inception in 2003, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has moved the HIV pandemic from tragedy toward triumph. PEPFAR has saved more than 20 million lives, prevented millions of HIV infections, and helped build people-centered, sustainable health and community systems in 55 countries worldwide. These efforts have not only transformed the global HIV response but also created robust and responsive HIV service delivery, public health, and clinical care platforms capable of addressing a myriad of other health threats, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hear from Dr. Angeli Achrekar, acting U.S. global AIDS coordinator and special representative for global health diplomacy, about PEPFAR’s remarkable progress, how the program has innovated and adapted in the context of COVID-19, and future directions for ending the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat, enhancing pandemic preparedness and response, and building a healthier, safer world.
